Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis found in contempt, going to jail

So, EVERYONE KNEW, that it was a done deal? Hmmmm. Guess, the voters were in on it too?
not that it was a done deal but it was a distinct possibility. Just like it is possible that Donald Trump will be the republican candidate for president or we will land a man on mars.

But, this is Kentucky. I'm not sure, it wasn't a shock.

A bit judgy...comparing me to "this Kim person"? Speaks volumes. ;)

Really volumes? Like what? Calling a random lady in the news 'this Kim person" is so judgy. LOL. I think much worse has been said by celebrities and others who made the news.
I know very little about Kentucky. Same sex marriage has been legal here for 10-15 years so this all seems so 1990s.

As for being a done deal I think anyone with half a brain could tell that this is the way society was going. Maybe not in 2015 but sometime in her or her son's lengthy civic career.

I agree that if you are a government official, you should do the job as required by law or resign, or take the punishment. That said, how many of you agree that government leaders of Sanctuary Cities also should meet the same fate?
They know what the possible consequences of their actions are just like she did. If it comes time for them to face the music, that is on them

Um no. That's not what I said.

But, there you go again.

What Scotus decision makes those the actions of those officials in contempt?

Although bills have been introduced in Congress no law has been enacted.

Possible, but not necessarily likely or inevitable. I don't live by maybes, mights or what ifs.

my guess if you were the one being denied a marriage license you would want it resolved as quickly as possible. But since govt offices are closed on the weekend, I don't think there will be many conflicts about this.

The most ironic part of this whole thing is she is not even good at her job. A transgender couple received a marriage license from her prior to the USSC ruling. She did not even check their birth certificates. If she did she would have seen that they were both born women even though one was now a transgendered man.

Given the ruling on DOMA in the 2013 Windsor case, it was extremely likely. There was no rational chance of Breyer, Ginsburg, Kaga, or Sotomayor changing their positions between Windsor and Obergefell, leaving just Kennedy. While it was plausible he might switch, it was difficult to find an argument that would make it likely, and indeed, much of the pre-decision discussions suggested that there was a greater chance of Roberts switching, making the vote 6-3.

I understand AND agree...this was on Kennedy. Any betting person with knowledge of his background, would have laid money on him voting FOR same-sex marriage. Although, there are people, who didn't think it would happen.

If I'm considering a job that may require me to go against my core beliefs, I would consider all the possibilities.

It's likely not possible to consider all the possibilities that may come down the pipeline in the future. But I think it's a stretch to suggest that Davis had no idea there was a possibility she would be asked to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in the near future. If she thought that then she lives under a rock.

If it can be shown that they gave her advice to disobey a court order, they could in theory be in some trouble. But to be honest, I don't think much will come of that de facto.
Call me Mr. Cynic, but I think she will soon be going on the Martyr Welfare circuit and get tons of money. Heck. That pizza place was over $400k last I looked.
GoFundMe won't allow cases like this to use their service anymore. Too many opportunists were cooking up sob stories and trying to cash in. What's sad with the Davis case is the political candidates who are using her case to score donations for themselves. I truly believe they are using their fund-raising and publicity needs to push Davis in a direction she might not have chosen without their influence. Now she's incarcerated and will have a record. She could have just resigned if the job conflicted with her beliefs. I've done that. I'm no martyr. Is it really worth it, Miss Davis?

Does a contempt of court jailing create a criminal record? I don't know. I believe there's a difference between civil and criminal contempt of court, but I have no idea which would apply here, or even if that's a federal concept.

Agree 1000 times!

I would just like to point out, that if the roles were reversed, and Kim Davis was a lesbian, and refused to give heterosexual couples marriage licenses because it was her belief, people would be up in arms at her saying how wrong she was, pointing out that she has no right to do that.
