Keeping Ukraine in our thoughts and prayers here

These stories are nice to hear about the people who can do this. I know we tend to think some of these actions are virtue signaling but there are many cases it's not. This is one I whole-heartedly think the celebrities are really trying to help out in what ways they can. I was shocked when I heard about Sean Penn being there. Sometimes you forget these high profile people are still people
Is there something like a national collection in the US or Canada? In the Netherlands the national donation charity is at 16 million euro at the moment.
Or the UK, I did see the Daily Mail's collection is almost at 3 million GBP.

In the US, there is no one national organization collecting. Obviously, the US government has sent millions and millions of dollars of supplies and humanitarian aid, as have many other governments.

The American Red Cross, in cooperation with Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations in numerous countries, is actively sending aid. As others have mentioned above, numerous celebrities have made donations and/or pledged to match donations. Companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX and AirBnB are making and soliciting donations and helping in many humanitarian efforts.

To me, one of the most heartwarming things I've seen is the hundreds of Germans meeting trains at the main Berlin train station holding up signs offering lodging to evacuees from Ukraine -- "1 Mom, 1 baby + 1 other child," etc.

There wouldn't be a national collection but rather various charity organizations you can donate to. I don't know if it's just a cultural thing, political, or practicality measure (due to the undertaking of donations on a national level like this) or a combination. I couldn't tell you about Canada though but one of the Canadians on this thread might be able to. That's quite nice to hear about the Netherlands and that amount impressive in my mind.

I don’t think it’s ever virtue signaling for Ryan & Blake. They are almost always the first celebrities to offer financial support in these situations.

Former RHONY Bethenny Frankel is another one. With her BStrong foundation, she’s always first to raise money and get it to the ground. I think they were at $4 million earlier this week.

I agree, we often forget they are real people too. And I’m glad to see any who wants to use their celebrity for good.

Yeah Ryan and Blake never came across that way. I was just thinking of comments people make when celebrities or well known people do things like this as in brushing it aside as some sort of virtue signaling and to me at least many times it's not that. With this war in particular I def. believe celebrities and well known people are doing this in a full on genuine way.

It also makes a difference in how celebrities donate. Some celebrities do a lot of good work and have charities next to their Hollywood lives, but are not very public about it. They do it because it's the right thing to do.

I do not want to start another Harry & Meghan debate, because I do think their hearts are in the right place. They've received an award last week and when receiving the award they said 'we stand with Ukraine'. It would have been much more powerful if they had said 'we stand with Ukraine, and we make a donation, we ask you to do the same'. Same for the SAG awards, so many people said something when receiving their awards. But when you stand in front of a room of very wealthy people, don't say just the words.

Again, could be they have all donated, and we just didn't hear about it.

I get where you're coming from. Keanu Reeves is someone who comes to mind. He's private, chill and down to earth and does so much you just sorta hear about it every so often and not because he's publicly announcing it. In other ways I can see though how publicly announcing you're donating $X amount to this cause may spread the word on others to do it too. But I get what you're saying about SAG awards and others. I think for many of these well-known people with this war most often money is what they actually can offer. Elon is offering what he can offer with his tech company. Sean Penn went in with what he could offer (trying to do a documentary of what was really going on). I can see however how a statement of support can look in lieu of that and something else (money, resources, etc).

A member of Russian free press in the US tweeted that 80 percent of those living in Russia get their info from state censored sources.
That's the same we hear here. Although here it says 80% was state controlled television, not media in general.

Interesting article just came in. Over 20.000 people from 52 countries have joined Ukraines Foreign Legion. But in addition to this, hackers have united and the estimate is that over 250.000 hackers have joined together to hack Russian government sites, websites of banks, media and other important companies and even ATMs. They place anti-Russian/Putin propaganda or take them offline.
We don't hear a lot about Russian hackers, the article claims that's probably due to being outnumbered.

Also reporting...

Police officers in Moscow today are stopping people, demanding to see their phones, READING THEIR MESSAGES, and refusing to release them if they refuse. This from Kommersant journalist Ana Vasilyeva. https://t.co/E8oBw3XPz1 https://t.co/rxk7AmdzOp
None of us like to see heavy-handed stuff like this, but it's a helpful reminder of the differences between a free society and a totalitarian one.

It's also actually a good sign in a way. It shows that both the protests in Russia and the difficulty of dictators controlling communication in today's world are starting to get to Putin and his cronies.

As I posted above, there were pretty large protests against the invasion yesterday in both Moscow and St. Petersburg...3,500 Russians arrested for protesting.

It's always interesting when hackers get involved. It weighs in on our right/wrong ideology towards hacking especially when oftentimes our lives are exposed and harmed due to hacking but then you get situations where hackers do things that you find yourself agreeing with such as this.

Gonna have to build some bigger prisons out in Siberia.

Anonymous has declared war on Russia. I can’t say that I mind this even if this group’s past activities haven’t always been right.
I quote the Wikipedia:

On February 25, 2022, Twitter accounts associated with Anonymous declared that they had launched a 'cyber operations' against the Russian Federation, in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian president Vladimir Putin. The group later temporarily disabled websites such as RT.com and the website of the Defence Ministry along with other state owned websites. That same day, the group leaked 200GB of documents and emails belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Anonymous also leaked 200GB worth of emails from the Belarusian weapons manufacturer Tetraedr, which provided logistical support for Russia in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On top of that Anonymous also hacked into Russian TV channels and played Ukrainian music through them and showed uncensored news of what was happening in Ukraine.

Thank GOD… The BBC is saying that Russia’s invasion is a shambles. They are ill prepeared, making little ground and haven’t captured key targets. Putin thought he had a slick war machine - in fact, it’s SICKLY.

Weapons from the West aren't helping. Thousands of anti-tank weapons, hundreds of surface-to-air weapons... They had hoped to have captured a key airport but have been kept back, restricting their convoy to a narrow road where they are being picked off!

They’re still a major force, but perhaps one that will never accomplish their initial goals.

I hope that's true, but I have 2 issues with it. 1) You may be right about the convoy in the north, but the troops coming in from Crimea are trained and effective. They took Kherson, destryed the Vinnitza airport and are about to attack Odessa, both in the air and potentially amphibious assault from the sea. 2) If Putin feels cornered, all nuclear bets are off. We in the west must give him some sort of face saving off ramp.

This is now the biggest refugee crisis since WW2. At what point does the world say enough. They are now bombing schools, hospitals and residential areas. How is this not considered war crimes? So very upsetting.

I feel exactly the same way. When does the world realize that this monster is not going to stop? I believe we're going to regret the day that we stood by and watched this horror occur. We never should have let it get this far. We're going to have to face this bully down...it's just a matter of time. I don't believe he's going to use nuclear weapons....he hides behind them.

And if we're not going to fight him...then we need to do more to completely isolate the Russians. Force them to revolt from within. We can't pussyfoot around with this guy. We can't freeze 1/2 of their foreign assets....or kick some Russian banks off the SWIFT system, but not the ones that are necessary to their oil/gas sector. If they're a petrol state, then we need to stop buying...period. This is why he's doing all of this in the first place....because he's not fearful of these sanctions. He believes that he'll win quickly and outlast the sanctions....and that we'll all just go back to normal. We need to make them so punitive and harmful that we force him to his knees...and to retreat.

How on earth does he think he's going to rule over these people when the killing is done? I know that within Russia that state TV is doling out nothing but lies and propaganda....but the bombs are raining on the people that he's supposedly going to rule over? A country that has been arming individual citizens for the past couple of weeks. Does he really think the Ukranians are going to put down those weapons and go back to being good little citizens? If he's miscalculated...it's in that fantasy.
