Keeping an eye on Tropical Weather 2024

Is anyone else scheduled to get to WDW in the next few days? We're scheduled to fly in mid-day on Thursday (I think there's a good chance that won't happen as planned). We talked about trying to push our plans back a couple days, but then we would get into the issue of trying to add a couple days at the other end. At least we weren't planning to hit the parks until Friday afternoon (Animal Kingdom). As of now, we're still thinking we'll head out Thursday morning, fly as far as Austin, TX, where we change to the plane that supposedly going to take us to WDW. Anyone else?
Are you serious? You aren’t flying to Orlando on Thursday.

I ended up switching my flight to fly in Friday night into Palm Beach Airport. Then I have to drive 2.5 hours after a long travel to Saphire Falls Resort. It was the only way I get get there for our trip.
Take the Turnpike instead of I95

Its quicker

I do that route once a month

We are set to land at 10:50AM on Friday... Wondering if that will happen? Expecting to be delayed.

Hurricane Milton Update: On Wednesday, Oct. 9, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Universal CityWalk will be open until 2 p.m., weather permitting, and will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 10. Volcano Bay will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. Hotel operations will continue.

I wouldn’t hop that plane to Austin until I knew MCO’s reopening time. Would suck to get stuck in Austin for a couple days because your flight got cancelled and the flights to MCO are full. Remember, these impacts are from weather so if you get stuck in Austin you have to pay all costs, your airline will give you nothing.

Some people need to reset their expectations a little bit on this, in the most respectful way possible of course.

Nobody is flying into Orlando on Thursday.

There is a very high chance nobody is flying into Orlando on Friday. Even Saturday coming and going might be an issue. It would be awesome if normal operations started again Friday morning, and I truly hope they do. Thursday though, that isn't happening. They won't even be out looking at damage until Friday morning IMO at the airport.

Airports don't just say " were open! " It takes a day or two to reset, and then get the planes back where they need to be etc.

I do hope for the best for everyone's plans

I wouldn't bother getting on that plane to Austin, unless you can change to coming to MCO another day later on or just want to vacation in Austin a little bit. Is your plane to MCO supposed to go out Thursday evening?

Our airport runways down here are known to flood during Hurricanes.

So take that into consideration too.

Could be a day or 2 before they can even get the water off the runways

Anyone else driving to WDW on Friday? We’re supposed to be driving from Pensacola. I’m concerned about the gas situation. Wondering if there will be gas on Friday along the I10 & I75 corridors. Don’t know if we should cancel or what???
we are scheduled to come Friday from SW Georgia. Haven't canceled yet, but definitely monitoring closely. You just never know with hurricanes.

100% this. I've been an airport manager (SHV, LGA, JFK, AUS, and now DAL) over the past 20+ years and this is an astute observation based in logic and reasoning.

My daughter (5) and I are flying down on Saturday (DAL-MCO on SWA) and even that may be in limbo. With that said, rest assured the professionals at GOAA (MCO and ORL) will be working diligently to resume operations once the storm is passed. They will have "ride out crews" staying at the facilities to more rapidly respond to any issue that may arise. Its no easy feat to restore service, but airports are a critical lifeline to rescue and relief efforts, so there will be a lot of pressure to reopen runways once an assessment is made.

Edit to add: Even if the airport "reopens", the human factor of having employees able to get to work is another challenge that each airline will have to address.

Seriously?? You are not flying into Orlando Thursday afternoon. It’s literally passing over at that time. What are you going to do in Austin if you get stuck and can’t fly into Orlando for 3 days?

I agree with the be kind. To Cast members, to fellow guests. Everyone is in the storm together. Be patient. And lower expectations. Having been through a hurricane at WDW how people treated each other stands out more than any other trip. Everyone is anxious/scared and it is a stressful situation.

Fully agree. I don’t know if it’s wishful thinking or just really not understanding the situation. It seems like people are thinking that the hurricane will arrive Thursday, be done Thursday night, everyone will pick up some sticks and leaves that fell, power will be fine, airport will reopen at 8 am Friday so my 10 am flight will be just fine.

I get it. If I had a Disneyworld trip planned that I have been waiting a year for etc, I would probably be thinking the same way.

We were scheduled to arrive Wednesday night and stay until Monday. I initially pushed our flight back to Thursday evening and now moved it to Friday afternoon. Based on what I'm seeing I can't imagine anyone will be flying into MCO on Thursday. I'm hoping that the damage to the Orlando area is not too severe, and we may be able to get in on Friday and salvage the weekend. However, I am prepared that we may have to cancel all together. We cannot add days on the end.

I would be hesitant to fly to Austin unless you would be OK with getting stuck there for a day or two. It's not a bad place to spend an impromptu weekend but I would have a backup plan for lodging and activities.

I think it's probably the unpredictability of hurricanes. My community was supposed to get hit hard by Helene, but it jumped East of us. If Milton stays in it's current path with intensity, WDW will probably be shut down for several days. But you never know and no reason to cancel plans if you don't have to until you do.
