Kate Couric leaving NBC for CBS

I am glad Katie is going to the CBS Evening News because now I won't ever have to see her again.

Does anyone even watch the nightly news any longer?? I think the national news at 6:30 is very dated. Most people already get their news all day long just by turning on their computers. I think only the elderly, and maybe not even they, watch the nightly news.

I watch it if something is going on big in the world--but now that we have satellite..I would be watching the 24 hour news networks.

What I do like about the evening news is they do piece together a nice summary from the day and then when they do their special reports or fluff pieces.

It's interesting to me how many people don't like Meredith Viera because of The View and Millionaire, when I see her as a hard news reporter first and foremost. She's been a reporter for thirty years now. Anyone remember the stink about 60 Minutes, when she wanted to go part time and they wouldn't let her? I've always thought she was wasted in entertainment, but I can see why she scaled back into the lighter area, with three children and a husband (who is a journalist, btw, and not a big-time producer) who has been suffering from MS for many years. I believe he might be going blind. He recently wrote a book about his experience.

I don't think Meredith would make a great morning person - but I really like and respect her as a journalist. I think SHE'D make a much better evening newscaster than Katie Couric!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not a fan of Katie Couric. It's not that I dislike her but I've never understood what it is about her that makes these networks throw millions of dollars at her. I don't remember the figure but last time she got a new contract on Today I was shocked at the amount.
I agree. I find her quite annoying and don't get her appeal at all. :confused3

It is good news that CBS hired a woman to anchor the evening news, but I just can't get all that excited about Katie Couric.

Interesting to say the least! I never watch the big three because I find myself tearing apart every story looking for the liberal angle (which is not hard at all) but I get distracted by doing that and then never really get the honest to goodness story anyway! Fox news for me!

Well, now I can watch Today again. (I am not a Katie fan..at all..she is so insincere.)

Cable news networks have taken their toll on network news whether it be Fox (which I can't watch because I either end up throwing things at the television or laughing hysterically) CNN, or MSNBC. Whatever your preference, it's hard for the networks to compete with a 24 hour news organization.

I don't watch any of the morning shows. So, I guess the whole Katie thing is over my head. :confused3

Amen! :thumbsup2

(Hey, Dan Rather still says no one has proved that his "National Guard" memos are fake. :rotfl: delusional!)

Okay, I am going to make an incredibly sexist comment, but it's what I really think, so what the hey...

I think Katie is another egotistical celebrity who is out for fame and success at the expense of her fatherless girls. A network anchor of that caliber is not exactly a hands-on soccer Mom. And, after losing their Dad, those girls deserve to have an involved parent. With the money that Katie has made, she could have put her career on hold a long time ago to raise her girls. I'm sorry, I know that is the dark ages, but no amount of talking about by Katie is going to convince me that anyone but the nanny is raising those girls.

well I missed her speach on today...does anyone know of a site where they will replay the video of her making the announcement today...thanks so muc...want to see it for myself...

Well, that's a new reason NOT to watch the CBS Evening News. The reason used to be Dan Rather, and now the reason is Katie Couric. Can't stand either one.

Katie is over her head in her position on the Today show. Her interviews are the most pathetic tabloid journalism. CBS has made a huge mistake. I give it a year, at the most, before another major change is made at the CBS anchor desk.

Okay...I have to ask...what is so bad about Meredith Viera? I only have ever seen her on Millionaire...and I don't mind her...is she a <insert derogatory female term> or something?

I admit, curiosity has captured me! :teeth:

I watch the View and Meredith just seems like a fake to me. She says how much she loves her husband but than she will say that he has never bought her a birthday gift and one year she asked him to and he still didn't. She doesn't wear underwear, which is okay but do we really need to know that. :confused3 And the way she talks about her kids, I think when she sent them to summer camp she whined about how much she missed them. I don't think she is a good interviewer and there are 4 other women on the View so there is not that much of Meredith, and it is only an hour. I just think that 3 hours of her will be way to much, plus she will be doing things as one person, not as a group, so she will be way more annoying. JMHO

I will miss Katie, and I never watch the evening news. I have MSNBC on most of the day so no real need to watch the evening news. But I might tune in just to see how she does, who knows, maybe I'll start watching.

No different from any other celebrity and no different than any other widowed celebrity.

They talk on the working mom threads often about how being out of the workforce can be disruptive to a career.

While it is sad they lost her dad--they were probably being raised by a nanny when both parents were alive.

it really isn't fair to hold her celebrity against her and hold her to a higher standard of parenting than any other celebrity out there.

She went ot work at what 4:00 in the morning and can be done by noon--I'm sure she does plenty with her girls.

Heck--I know some wealthy moms---who have live in housekeepers who so they can make their tennis matches, their women's club events--et cetera.

You are judging her for her celebrity--without knowing the real scoop. :sad2:

I worry more for those who flaunt their children as accessories to make it look like they are really parenting.

(edited b/c i had work at home job on the brain and meant to say working moms).

I don't care for the people on CBS's morning show but I like Matt and Katie and also Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson. They all seem likable to me. I also like Meredith. Is she replacing Katie? I should read this thread.

Oh and good points, Lisa Loves Pooh!

I have a question...is Katie the first nightly news female anchor?

If so, YAY! for women!!

If not, ignore this post.

She will be the first solo female anchor. Barbara Walters did it with I think Harry Reasoner back in the 70's and that was a disaster, and Connie Chung did it with Dan Rather and that didn't work either. Now there's a woman co-anchor on ABC but Katie will be the first to do it alone.

Yep. I wasn't aware of that--but it was in one of the articles I saw.

Which is nice.

Banter works in the morning and not in the evenings---and really--do they need a hundred anchors on the national news...no.

It works on the specials--but since nightly news is just a recap. We don't need multpile anchors rehashing.

And Connie chung--ANNOYING--more so than anyother anchor...EVER!

Oh yeah, I remember Barbara and Connie. (I'm old...)

Thanks for the reminder & info!
