My brother, wife and 15 month old son joined us for this trip. We had a 2 bedroom booked, I had requested in this order 1. smoking, 2.high floor, and 3.partial ocean view. We recieved a NON-smoking 1st floor room. Upon entering the room I called the front desk who said they were sold out and to smoke on the balcony. I voiced my discomfort with this idea, we had never intended to smoke in the room because my brother is very much a non-smoker but we wanted to be able to smoke on the balcony without offending others. The front desk assured me they would call if they recieved any complaints from the units above us. I did go upstairs a few days later and the reason no one complained was the units above us were smoking units!

All in all a great trip. The room 1515 and 1514 were in good shape. Our food disposal was leaking one night and a call to maintaince had the whole thing replaced in 30 minutes. The gentleman who came to fix it, told us he would have to empty the sink to fix it. I replied in Ga that meant washing the dishes, we all laughed. All of us left to go play tennis upon returning we discovered he HAD WASHED THE DISHES!!! My DH who had stayed behind said he laughed while washing them.

I'm sad to say this trip my kids just weren't into the activities at all. We did do bingo one evening and it lasted a grand total of 30 minutes. Alot of the activities seemed geared more toward the 3-8 crowd.

The beach was were most of our time was spent, the first 3 days were beautiful. The water wasn't as clear as last June, I'm wandering is this how it is in August? One day we had overcast skies and light rain. The last 2 days we had 7 FOOT WAVES. The staff said they had never seen them that big before. It was great for boogie boarding.

The best part had to be seeing a manatee, dolphin, and shark not even 10 feet from the shore during high tide. This was on 2 seperate evenings. We saw another shark in the morning, we were the only ones on the beach up until the boardwalk area where we found 2 teens surfing we mentioned we had seen the shark about .5 a mile down the beach and they exited the water. We did mention these sightings to staff who said it was probably a tarpin, I don't think so. From the fin on the back to the dorsal fin there was a distance of at least 4-5 feet. We also got to see a baaby logger head sea turtle make its way down the beach into the ocean. VERY COOL!!!

Dining
We ate at the Patio twice, Capt Hiriams twice and then several fast food places during this trip. Everyone in our party agreed Capt. Hiriams was the best.

The only area that I saw that I felt needed ALOT of work is the putt-putt area. It looks VERY rough!!!

Sorry this was so long if you have any questions I'll be glad to answer. ANd if anyone knows why the ocean wasn't as clear as June I would love to know. I assumed it was Cristobal. We can't wait til next June when we return, my brother and wife are on board for the next trip. I love it when family enjoy DVC and start to understand why its so great.

The ocean and beach at Vero seem to be different every time I go. I bet Cristobal did have a lot to do with the murkiness of the water. The bottom was being churned up. I saw on the Orlando Sentinel site last week that they had riptide warnings posted along the coast. That must have been those waves you were seeing.

Thanks for the great report. It must have been amazing seeing all that wildlife. Although, I could do without the sharks. ;)

We were very excited about the wildlife. We stayed for a week in June 2001 and didn' t see anything except for the loggerhead sea turtle laying eggs on the turtle walk but I must say that was exciting enough in itself. My brother is really big into to nature and we were trying to sell him on the idea of making this an annual family trip and I must say the critter sightings helped!!!!!!!:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Sorry you didn't get what you requested,Glad you enjoyed your stay overall. Tarpon can get quite large but they have a reflective silver color and pretty easy to distinguish from sharks. Just a hint: Up at the McLarty treasure museum on A1A is a viewing deck where you can sometimes get a view of infant seaturtles feeding in the reef just a few yards off the beach. This summer was the most I have ever seen in this area. Hope your DB makes it an annual trip there is a lot of wildlife to be encountered in the IndianRiver lagoon and local area.Did you get a chance to see any of the migrating blue land crabs? They can be a sight. The day we left the resort we had one under the wheel of our car in the garage that wouldn't let us leave.LOL

We didn't see any blue crabs. My brother is up for next summers trip, our last night we ate at Capt Hiriams and talked about doing the Indian River kayak thing. He seemed very interested in that!! This summer was a little hard to do much we had my 15 month old nephew with us next summer it should be a little easier.

Glad you had a great trip. I just saw on the evening news where someone was attacked today in Vero by a shark. So, that probably was a shark you saw.
