Just rented points--have confirmation number-- how do I confirm

I have been researching the security aspect of renting myself as I have points that I am considering renting. I have found a couple of brokers that will act as a transaction broker for the buyer/seller for a small fee. Does anyone use this means for transacting a secure and safe rental? Seems reasonable to me.

An escrow service would be fine. They typically would hold the payment for the renter until arrival and then send the funds to the member.

I suspect that many members would he hesitant to agree to such an arrangement since they would have to wait so long to receive the money, but it would definitely protect both sides of the transaction. The cost of the service would need to be negotiated in advance too.

Thanks Doc, an escrow service didn't occur to me when I read pzflkw's post.

You should have checked out the Member B4 renting. Check out the DIS Rent/Trade Board. At the top you will find some great info about renting. Bottom line is you both have to have trust in each other for rentals to work.

Hi,

You are very right about trust. I terminated a deal because the renter states they were going to send me a deposit but never did until later when they got a copy of the name change confirmation from me. If the renter doesn't feel comfortable just terminate the deal, do not drag the dvc owner to come to the renter's terms. Now, they are giving me all sorts of threats from filing a complain with DVC saying that I am a scam and they are also going to file a complaint with Disboard. I have given them plenty of time to send out the deposit and finally also informed them that by email that the deadline is x/x/08. When I did not get the deposit by the deadline and no respond to my email...I feel that the reservation does not belong to them anymore. When I got the whole payment today, I told them that the deposit is late and if they still want the reservation they would have to pay a late fee. They went crazy... what comes next.. I am sure you know ...I am the owner, if I feel that I need a deposit to hold a ressie, I need a deposit. If you don't feel comfortable walk away.

I honestly have done it several times with people who have rented from me. And while I completely agree with its possibility to turn out bad, I do it as just one form of confirmation to the renter. Written confirmations take several days to arrive, so it is just a way to give peace of mind to the person who has just sent money to me. I DO however, forward all emails and letters sent to me by DVC as well; its not like I'll just give them the call as a confirmation. So you see, not everyone is out there to scam people around. :upsidedow

I didn't know the renter could call the resort a couple days before leaving to confirm! I think that's great and will suggest it next time I plan renting some points. ;)

This is my story. When I did not get the confirmation of the name change from DVC after 14 days and the travel date on the ressie is within 50-45 days, I called my renter suggesting about the 3 way call. The renter initially said no on that Sunday and will not send me a deposit unless he gets the hardcopy of the confirmation letter from me. I told the renter, fine but I can't hold the reservation for them without a deposit. If the reservation is still available when the confirmation letter arrives I will call the renter. Do you think it's fair to say that?

The correct way to do business is to have everything spelled out in your written agreement. Include deposit requirements and due dates. Date the final payment requirement 60 days before check in. That way you have time to react if payment isn't made.

The agreement should provide protection and a clear understanding of what is expected by both parties.

Even with the best agreement if both parties aren't comfortable it's best to not do business.

DVC and the DIS have nothing to do with your private business transaction.

Even that isn't 100%. I've read on the DIS where non-members called the resort and the resort tried to connect them to MS. When they asked MS, they were not told anything. So it isn't a sure thing either.

It is a sure thing IF (BIG IF!!) you actually talk to the front desk of the resort! When you call the number for the resort on the confirmation letter you have to be insistant that you speak to the front desk. Yes, I have been transferred to DVC Member Services and CRO and they are no help at all. But when I have talked to the actual front desk of the specific resort less than a week before arrival they can and will confirm the reservation for the guest.

To be honest I recommend this to my guests and I do it myself for every trip. It has been my experience that certain elements of my reservations have been "lost" in the DVC to resort download. Things like links of multiple reservations, DDP, and requests for specific views or resort sections do not always make it to the resort from DVC. By calling a few days before I make sure my reservation(s) at the resort include these items.

Blahnde

If I rent from another member and they make the reservation for me, and we are both DVC members, can I call with the conformation number and check on it??

Actually, no. Your points did not make the reservation so you are no different than a non-member at that point. Sorry.

You own the reservation, they need to abide by your rules. If they did not, and you cancelled the reservation, just send the money back. If you don't get the money and you were past the 31 day timeframe, you'd be stuck with a reservation that you couldn't use or holding points.

Plus they can complain to the DIS or DVC all they want. This is a private agreement between you and them and neither DVC nor the DIS will get involved.

Do you know of where I would be able to get a sample/boilerplate of a renter's agreement for a DVC reservation?

Ask the person from who you rented to make a three way call to DVC Member Services. Every time I've rented that's what I do to give a little peace of mind to the person renting my points. I just call MS and right after I've given all my personal info, I make the three way connection so she can hear the confirmation. Hope this helps!
:hippie:

Nice thing to do for the renter.
