Hockeychic, the braces are off (there's one curly and one straight) use this: [*IMG*]http://sunnyshopper.com/clipart/goofy08.jpg[*/IMG*], but strip out the *'s.

I am going Goofy in 2008! DH did it this year, and he will do it again next year with me. Thank you so much for the awesome siggie Sunny! You're the best!

Are they offering the DVC discount for the 2008 Goofy? Is the form available yet?

Call 407-938-3398. It's not on the DVC member website yet. If I remember correctly from past years, they may not have the form quite yet.

I'm going Goofy and I'm taking DS17 with me!!!!!. I just registered us both and am waiting to see if DW will try the Half in 2008. Race report for Full forhtcoming.

Chester

Same here for us. I'm doing Goofing and DS16 will do the half. He voluntered at water staion #2 this year, but next year is running the half. :cool1:

I was also able to make reservations at the Contemporary for Marathon weekend:banana:

A bunch of thanks all around--it's so good to know that so many of us are Goofy! I'm looking foward to talking with everyone over the next year.

Thanks Sunny, for the clippie, it looks fabulous!

And thanks Blueroses and Hockeychic for the inspiration about moving from walking to the Goofy. Although I'm feeling pretty confident about it right now, I know I'll be needing encouragement as my training really gets underway. And Blueroses, my logic, if not my time, is the same as yours. As long as I'm traveling across the country.....

Oh, and one last thanks, to Mel. The weekly training threads will be very useful as I move from walker to runner. (Whoa--did I just acknowledge a change in my identity? And I thought I was way too old for that!)

deekaypee & Blueroses, I have embraced your concept, I to am traveling quite a distance to WDW so why not go for it.

I will register. However, I am going to wait as long as possible to officially register due to financial things that have come up lately....big thing buying DS his first car.....2003 Pontiac Sunfire....wow I have a 2002 and 2004....how did he end up with a car newer then 1 of mine....:rotfl:

Congrats to everyone who has decided to go Goofy in 2008. I just want to offer a word of caution; please think long and hard before you make the commit to run Goofy. The Goofy Challenge is an endurance event--a half marathon followed by a full marathon 24 hours later--that's a total of 39.3 miles and believe me, that's a LONG way. DH ran Goofy this past weekend, he had a great time and a great experience, but it was difficult and he said he would never do it again. Stephen started training last spring (after running the Disney full and the Flying Pig half) and by the fall and winter, he was up to 50 mile weeks. It takes A LOT of time, commitment, and experience to train for and compete in the Goofy Challenge.

Please don't take this the wrong way and I'm not trying to discourage anyone, but if you have never run any long distance before (half marathon plus), the Goofy Challenge really isn't the place to start.

If you have already signed up for Goofy, good luck!!! And start training now!! Please don't wait until summer to start training, it will be too late. We'll see you guys in January 2008, DH is doing the full and I'm undecided if I'm doing the half or full ( I did the half in 2006 and the full this past weekend). Happy training!!!

THank you for the advise Krista,

I actually just posted something similar to this on another thread, after reading all the trip reports I am getting scared. I have never been a runner, well at least not since I was a teenager but I am a avid walker, however I do have about 30 pds to lose. I was going to wait till May, that is 4 months of solid trainning, yes, I have already started, I figured if I had any chance at all I need to do it now. However, I really want to enjoy the weekend and get to all the meets that I can and if I over do it then I will miss out on so much.

I am so confused......

Registered for the Goofy this morning. Seeing you guys sign up already made me want to give it a try.

I was a little hesitant because I didn't want the half to keep me from the special full medal but my wife said she had faith I could do it.

Thanks for the well wishes and cautionary notes--it's true, those of us who have registered for the Goofy without self-identifying as runners have our work cut out for us, so I appreciate the warnings/information about the training.

You're right--the Goofy probably isn't the place to start. But it is the place to finish! And that's really just what I'm aiming for, to finish. If that means shuffling my feet for both races, running one race and walking the other, or even walking both races, that's fine. Yeah, it'll be a lot of committed training. But that's what I'm looking for, and I take inspiration--as well as a warning tale--from your and your DH's experiences. :) But I'll admit, I don't think I'd have a chance of meeting my goal if I didn't have a lot of support in my DH and DIS/WISHers.

And Hockeychic/Kim and drdelsol, I'm glad to hear you're on board with Goofy or still considering running it. You're welcome to join me at the back of the pack, 'cuz that's where I'll be. (I'm slooooow.) And if you're ahead of me, know that I'm cheering you on!

I agree w/the cautions offered here, but I also know it is possible to do the Goofy as your first ever event. I did it in '06 without ever having done a distance event before (actually, other than one charity 5K, I'd never done any organized event at all). I had a solid base of walk/running under my belt, having been at it since high school (15 years ago). But I had never gone longer than about five miles at any given time. Originally I signed up for the full, but then added the half in a fit of nuttiness. I decided that if I was going to do it, I'd go all the way and collect all the hardware in one shot. Everyone around me decided I had finally flipped my lid.

I trained for it all year, first training for and doing a "mock" half in my neighborhood that June to see what that distance felt like. Then I picked up the full training in august, doing double workouts each weekend. I had no intention of completely running either race. I was content to walk/run both races with intervals of 3 walk, 2 run. I finished both and collected my hardware.

The training does take a lot of time and if you don't train you will be sorry and possibly dead. It's not like the half where maybe you can let some workouts slip by or not start training until november and still complete it in reasonable shape. You do have to put in the work (and work at it for most of the year), but if you do it's completely do-able, even if you've never done distance before. Especially if you are content to walk or walk/run both races. I wouldn't advise someone new to exercise to pledge to run both races. But walking is do-able.

I'll be at it again next January. This time I hope to fully run the half and walk/run the full. I've already scheduled my mock half for May and I'm working towards that now.

Good luck all you Goofy's. Everyone has to decide for themselves what they can handle, but I'm living proof that you can do it with no distance background (heck, without any racing experience whatsoever). Just my .02.

Hey guys! Congrats on the decisions to do Goofy next year. Just thought I'd add my two cents since I just finished the races. I have to agree with Krista (since she IS my DW :) ) that it is a huge task. That's why they call it Goofy's Race and a Half CHALLENGE, instead of event or race. It's a challenge to see who can complete the distance. Not everyone who competes finishes both events. 3,000 people registered. 2,480 finished. That means that 520 well-intentioned athletes either did not start or did not finish the event. I do not say this to scare you, but as others have said, it is a serious challenge. I have no doubt that someone can begin walking/running right now and be in good shape to complete this thing next January. But it DOES take a lot of effort. Like Disneefun said, you cannot blow this off and start training in October and expect to finish it. Endurance events carry with them a degree of risk, and these risks are greatly elevated for those who are ill-trained or uninformed. Start now. And get to your doctor right away if you are just beginning from scratch to make sure you are good to go (maybe even have a stress test done--a lot of WISHers have done this). One of the key factors to avoiding injury in distance events is bone and muscle strength, and this can only be built up gradually. Aerobically, you will notice big strides in the first couple of months, but the muscle and bone density will only come over time. This is crucial to completing a marathon injury-free. DON'T push too fast too hard. This is why most of the WISHers who completed Goofy trained all year. Building up to so much mileage takes its toll on the body, and this mileage is critical to being succesful with Goofy.

I completed it and I have my medal, but I probably won't do it again next year. It just took too much time, especially on the weekends and definitely as the later months progressed. I think I'll go for a good, strong (and hopefully faster) finish in the full marathon next year.

I'm by no means an expert, but if anyone wants any details of what I thought worked well/didn't work well for training, let me know.

Good luck to all of you as you begin training. If you take it seriously, completing the Goofy Challenge can be one of the greatest moments of your life. I know it was for me.

Steve
