Just Registered for Goofy 2008!

I'm by no means an expert, but if anyone wants any details of what I thought worked well/didn't work well for training, let me know.

Good luck to all of you as you begin training. If you take it seriously, completing the Goofy Challenge can be one of the greatest moments of your life. I know it was for me.

Steve

I guess I have a question on how you were able to train all year and peak at the right time. Did you just have a really long base period?

I am an endurance cyclist, mtb racing, and peak a few times during the year for certain events.

I just started to train for a 1/2 marathon coming this April to have something to focus on in the winter and would like to go Goofy in 2009. I'm just wondering if I have to commit an entire year to just running to be able to do it.

Thanks

I have been training for a year now for 2008 Goofy. I was running 10 miles 5 days a week. I just increased my mileage to 11.5 this week five days a week. I also go to the gym for strength training. My long runs are 13 and 14 miles. I guess those should be increased too. I was wondering how often do you or should someone do a long distance run. I try to do one once every two weeks. Is this enough or should I do a long run once a week. I am getting nervous. I want to make sure I finish. Any advice would be great.

Er... for most of us, 10 miles IS a long run. So if you're doing that 5 days a week, and then adding an additional longer run on weekends? Well that's pretty insane mileage already there. At that level of conditioning you're already where you would need to be to run the whole thing, now I guess its just a matter of how fast you want to run it.

I have to disagree if we're talking about the Goofy. Most of what I've read has recommended working up to a 20 mile run as the "long run" before a marathon by itself. When I did my half, my long run was 10 miles.

Every plan I have seen has had a long run (progressively longer as the training continues) once a week.

There are two factors involved in doing the Goofy, how much your body can recover from doing the half on Saturday and how much you need to train to do a full on its own. Put them together and the training involved will be greater than the sum of its parts (in my opinion).

My plan is to train as I would for a marathon+ and not try to set any time records on the half.

I think you misunderstood me. I doubt any of the plans you've been reading through call for 50 mile weeks such as those they are posting they already run. They are well beyond the endurance ability level of all but the most advanced plans. It would not be a stretch to drop one of the 10 mile days each week, and run a 10/20 weekend instead, which for most people was the furthest they ran prepping for the Goofy. If they're already at that level a year out, they might as well start focusing on speed and quality workouts. Definitely don't need to worry about finishing.

I am no expert but if I were running 50+ miles every week for a year (+) I would be very fearful of injuries. Of course there are athletes out there that can tolerate that kind of mileage but I know that I can't.

Most training plans indicate maintenance training of 15-25 miles per week until you start the actual training for the event--anywhere from 18-20 weeks out from the event, depending on the program you choose. Most people who attempt Goofy put a long-ish run in the day before thier "long" training runs...as mentioned, 10 miles and then 20 miles are commonly the longest runs in training and should adequately prepare you.

I had every intention on training this way--w/ a long-ish run the day before my "Long" runs and life got in the way, big time. Anyway, I wasn't able to train the way I would have hoped. I finished both races w/ a smile on my face and was able to walk around the parks on Sunday evening and Monday w/ out too much trouble.

The best advice I can give anyone who is attempting the marathon or GOOFY is to get out there and participate in other running events thru the year. I try to find long races when I am in "training" to use as my long training runs. You can figure out what works for you--shoes, socks, clothes, food, bathroom situation.....everything! This helps eliminate nerves once you get to Disney and gives a boost of confidence.

Enjoy--we had so much fun! :thumbsup2

Hey all - my first post on this site. I had a great time meeting a number of WISH Team members the morning of the marathon, through great friends Howard and Cam and decided I needed to get on the boards as well!

I signed up for Goofy 08 and am really looking forward to it. Never thought I would be happy to pay over $200 for three t-shirts and some really heavy bling, but there it is. Howard - you have to sign up also!

I look forward to getting ready for next year - hope everyone is recovered from the heat of this year.

Hi all,

Great to see many new Goofy runners/walkers. I will be going for my 3rd Goofy(DW #2) in 08. I beleive anyone can run or walk the Goofy if the start to build a base over the next 6 months and the start a marathon training program the last 4. The most important day is your long day. Running 10 miles every day will make you the best 10 mile runner in the race but will mean pain(and possibly doom ) for the marathon or Goofy. I used to be an ultramarathoner (so years just walking and later running). Blew both Achilles in 01 and had surgery in 03. No more running so back to all walking. I went from nothing to building on a very low weekly mileage with a few 3 hr long days(these built up slowly from 1 1/2 hrs). I did no races from 01 until the 06 Goofy. I walked a 3:05 & 6:32. I was a very good powerwalker before Achilles injuries where I walked a 5:09 WDW marathon(1996) and a 10:32 50 mile race.

This year injured most of the last 7 weeks with only 2 2 1/2 hr walks and nothing at all the last 3 1/2 weeks before the race. My DW had a slow plan this year due to heat. We did a casual 3:21 1/2 and were on a 6:40 Full when my wife hurt her heel(later to find it to be PF) and she hobbbled and I help push us to a 6:58. Way too close to missing Goofy! This being said, take the 1/2 easy and just finish, save your legs for the full. You will be glad. This year with less training my quads felt great compared to 06 when I got caught up and went out to hard with the full the next day. This is really important with heat like this year.

The gist is train and believe you can do it. If you believe you can, you can make your body go beyond what it wants to. An old ultra saying " when you feel good, you will start to feel bad sometime and when you feel bad, you will start to feel good sometime as long as you keep moving forward"

Listen to your body and don't try to run through injuries. Better to be healthy and unijured than overtrained and injuried.

There are many Goofy reports from the last 2 years on my website.
