I am so excited! I got the Body Only and a 1 Gig Memory Card.

Now, what lens should I buy? I have a EF 35-80 lens from an old Rebel G. Will that work on this Rebel? How about the Vivitar 100-300 that I have? :confused3

Thanks! I can't wait to start posting photographs. :)

Congrats on the purchase.

Your lenses that worked on your rebel G should work on this one as well. But the one problem you will have with a starting point of 35 is with the conversion factor your now starting with a 56mm So you don't have a terribly wide angle lens.

What to buy depends on what you want to spend, as will all cases in lenses.

There seams to be a fairly even devide of people that like the canon 28-135 and those that like the sigma 18-125. I think the canon is probably a better lens with a slightly larger starting point. But it is also more expensive.

I personnally have the sigma and think it is great. I also highly recommend the canon 50mm f1.8 prime. You can get it for under $100 and is a great lens for portraits and night shooting.

Enjoy the new camera no mater what you decide.

Congratulations and welcome to the family! :cool1:

I too have the 18-125 (fondly called "the Kelly" on these boards), and it is a great all purpose lens!

Have fun!!!

Thank you for the comments.

I definately want the Canon 50mm. It's on my 'list'. :teeth: I want to do a lot of portraits and it looks like this lense is one of the best for that. Am I correct?

Thank you for the kind words.

Can you tell me a little more about the Sigma 18-125? What do you use it primarly for? How would you rate the quality? Thank you! :teeth:

I haven't heard a single person with this lens that didn't like it. Great for portraits as you can open it wide up and blur the background.

I use the Sigma as my all purpose "walk around" lens. I primarily shoot my kids' sports. It responds well to the XT's sports function, where I'm able to shoot multiple shots in rapid succession. For instance, I shoot alot of my son pitching, then he and my husband look at the break down of some of his pitches after the game.

Here's a sports shot. Not the greatest b/c the angle is head-on (I hate that), but you can see how well the lens did to stop the action. (note: I purposely smudged the child's name on his shirt for this upload).

Here was my first attempt at the XT's macro function, using the Sigma lens:

Finally, here's a shot without flash from way back in the Walt Disney Theater on the rocking Magic (I think I enhanced this one for brightness):

Being a newbie, and having no other lens, I can't rate the quality with authority. For me it has served its purpose well; I use the zoom all the time and do not have much "hunt" problem. I just purchased a longer zoom (because I just love a long zoom :teeth: ), but I really didn't "need" it: the 18-125 has great reach and worked well for most shots.

HTH! Have fun with the new camera!!

Thank you!

I ordered the Canon 50mm today! The Sigma 18-125 will have to wait a little while longer.  :sunny:
