Just off the Dream: Deck Chair HOGS

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but we always leave one of our party with our chairs & stuff. If someone has to go to the bathroom or get a snack/drink, someone else stays with the chairs & stuff. I just always assumed (both at the pools and Castaway Cay) that if one of us wasn't there, when we returned, someone else would likely be using the chair(s), and our items may or may not be able to be found.

Granted, we're not folks who tend to stay at the pool for a long time. But, I saw someone post that they had chairs at Castaway Cay & left for lunch. When they returned, someone had taken "their" chairs. I always assumed if your entire party left to eat lunch, you'd be forfeiting your chairs.

Am I crazy? This drives me crazy, as do people who enter a place to eat and someone gets a table and just sits there with no food while another person waits in line. IMO if you haven't paid for your stuff then get your a$$ of the chair...

Well IMO I think that is the epitome of rudeness! I just recently underwent my 2nd back surgery in four months. Unless you saw the scars on my back you wouldn't know it if I was just standing there. You wouldn't know how much pain I am in after moving and how sometimes, I am in so much agony I just need to sit down. So if I am somewhere that requires standing in line, I am more than likely going to send either my DH or DDs' to make our purchase. So just because I don't have product in hand, I should not be allowed to sit???? It's not like I'm not making a purchase and even if I wasn't..... Where is your compassion??

Celebrity has pool butlers. I'm not 100% sure how it works, but if no one has been in the chair for 30 minutes, the pool butler will remove any left items and refresh the chair with a new towel. Sounds like DCL could use some pool butlers ....

I am pretty sure no one in this thread is talking about those who are injured, whether you can see the injury or not. I think you are taking his comment completely the wrong way. No one is begrudging anyone a seat. It's the chair hogs and seat savers that are being chastised. Not someone who is injured and needs to rest for a bit.

Thank you for you kindness, but based on gerryspiers post, I think they are VERY clear as to that if you haven't made a purchase you do NOT have the right to have a seat.... see their post below.... in my eyes, it is very clear how they feel and I find it incredibly sad....
But Thank you for showing me that there are still compassionate people out there on the Dis...

I completely agree with you as far as the pool is concerned but not so much at Castaway. At Castaway, I feel you do plant your group at a spot and at times, you all may not be at the chairs but don't think it's right for someone to take your spot. Castaway tends to be a place you do go back and forth (lunch, bikes, bathrooms, water, boats, etc.). In three cruises, I haven't seen a lack of chairs for everyone at Castaway (maybe just not prime spots).

At the pools, completely agree with no reserving policy. I think nothing of moving a white towel or a single shoe or some other odd item and sitting in a chair. And on our last cruise, I did see an attendant doing the same. I was able to find a chair within a few minutes everytime. Rules should be enforced with common sense and common courtesy.

while in all 10 of my cruises I've never had a problem finding a chair when I wanted one, when I go somewhere even if it is just to the bathroom I will either take my stuff or get my dad to sit there. I'm not one to lay out in the sun or go in the pools much so usually only have a chair for the most a hour. I cruise the Dream for a back-2-back on the 17th of this month and will hopefully do the same thing.

Thank you Subi for seeing my comment as it was supposed to be. I am not the monster I am made out to be. If someone genuinely needs to rest I would gladly give up my chair but the post is about the people who abuse this practice. Hypothetically speaking how would it feel to someone with an injury, entering a place to eat and I was keeping a table for someone already in line and I had no injuries whatsoever. I think they would be pretty put out.
Anyway I dont want this to start another rant....too many of those lately.

We're taking our first ever cruise in March. Our twin sons are 12, and one has a physical disability and uses a walker/wheelchair. I'm concerned about getting around the ship, crowds everywhere, and especially at Castaway Cay. We'll be stopping to get a beach wheelchair on our way to the beach (hopefully there are lots!).

Are we likely to get trampled by the masses dashing off the ship to get those prime beach spots? It's going to be tough if we're way out of the way, but I guess we'll manage.

I was hoping to run the CC 5K, but if it's mayhem on the beach, I'd better scratch that plan and help my hubby get the family settled!

Oh my- no worries! On our cruise 2 weeks ago it was nothing like that at all. We were on a full Magic sailing and took the CC tram to the Pelican Point stop where we literally had our pick of chairs. When we left at 3:30 pm there were even a few left. Just note that you can often debark earlier than they announce you can. We saw people leaving the ship so we headed down there and probably beat the largest crowds..

I can see everyone's point. I personally don't go to the pool just because I can't lay out in the sun, but I do like it later in the day when it's not so hot out or to watch the movie at night and do find it frustrating when I can't find one to lay on to watch. The other problem is that they also take the chairs and tables and put their stuff on them and then when you're trying to find a place to sit and eat you can't even do that. Numerous times I had to just take the food that I wanted to eat back to my room and eat it there since there was absolutely no place to eat. It is just plain rude to feel that you can take a chair/lounger for the whole day. If you have all your stuff (i.e. towels, shoes, etc) why can't you just put it on or underneath the lounger and only use one because honestly are all of you going to be using the loungers/chairs all at the same time all day long. I just want to be able to get some food and be able to sit down for about 15 minutes just to eat and then get up and go do something else. Is this asking too much?

i will get up early and go for a run. since i know there are people already trying to save chairs i will go snag 2 myself, dh and I, not for child and then go finish my run. now i am only gone for about 30 mins but i completely expect my stuff to be on the chair still. the early bird gets the worm is what i believe. however i do agree that if you are going to depart from your chair for more then an hour you should give it up.

do people really do that? leave their stuff unattended for 4hrs? so they can have a seat when ever they feel like...wow..now I know...and the best part I can imagine is if you move their stuff and they come back and see you in their chair.

I mean 2 hrs should be enough..becauseI know in like Aquatica we'll do the Roa Rapids and the Lazy River and that might take like a little more than an hour, and we expect to have our stuff still on our chairs.

Since we don't use the pools a whole lot, can't comment on experience of this. However, on the flip side -- we were STUNNED in 2005 when we were crossing the Panama Canal. People were up on deck pulling all the deck chairs to the rails -- literally bottom of loungers touching glass -- so they could sit all day and watch. However, it prevented anyone from actually being able to GET to the rails to take pictures or look down or out.

FINALLY, people started making a stink and CMs came along and told everyone they could not leave their chairs at the rails. We were amazed that anyone thought this was a proper way to act by blocking everyone else's views!

Generally, I tend to agree with that philosophy for most things. We will get to where we want to be early and save a spot for ourselves (i.e. parades or nighttime shows at WDW, the port, a place at Castaway Cay, etc.). However, the difference is, once we get a spot we don't leave.

However, with respect to seats by the pool or in the WDW theater, DCL has a No Saving Seats policy. It's published every day in the Navigator and even printed on many of the seats themselves. You can't go to the WDW theater and save seats for everyone else in your party (well you can, but that's rude as DCL has asked you not to do so). Similarly, you shouldn't save seats near the pool just because you got there early as DCL has asked that you not do it. If someone saw you save a seat and then take off running, they would be within their right to ask a CM if it's okay to sit there (assuming there were no other open seats nearby).

Personally, we've never had an issue finding a lounge chair. We don't have to be right up front by the pool, but we do like to be in the sun. On the Magic/Wonder, we would go to Deck 10 if needed. There are always lots of seats up there. I think that's a great analogy. You don't see people at MK or the parks putting their shoe in a spot to save it for the parade. That shoe would be come in a heartbeat.

Can't imagine what you are picturing in your head about CC but it certainly is not mayhem or a mad dash to get a spot....all the spots are great and there are tons of chairs all over and umbrellas. We were at CC 3 times on the Dream in January and we never had a line to get off or any trouble finding charis. Don't worry. We have also been on the Magic and Wonder 20 times and only once was there a back up getting off at CC and that was because we got there late so everything was a bit backed up.
