at the Brown Derby? My parents are dining there next week, but we are eating elsewhere. Should I have them get a piece of cake for me?

I like it, but it's certainly not worth a special trip or anything. If someone you know is going to be there, they are willing to take the cake with them... I'd say try it.

I didn't like it at all and can't for the life of me figure out what the fuss is. Personally I thought the bitterness of th grapefruit was horrible especially against the sweetness of the cake. I wouldn't want someone to bring me a piece

It used to be pretty good, but last meal at the Derby, it was very dry and barely a hint of grapefruit. If you are at the Derby it's worth trying, but no need for a special piece.

I just ate there and tried the cake for the first time last week.

I found it to be extremely bitter.... not tart, but bitter, like they put too much of the "white" skin in it.

But I am all for everyone trying it and seeing for themselves.

My DH who LOVES his desserts absolutely detested the grapefruit cake.

This is one of those desserts that I dont understand the hype about. Maybe I got a bad peice but I didn't like it at all. It was not sweet and sour like pinapple upside down cake or something like that- it was just sort of bitter. I would definately not go out of my way for it.

I've only ordered it once and I think it was last May. I enjoyed it. My piece was fresh and I found it to only have a hint of tartness.

But $7 or 8 for a piece of layer cake is just silly IMO.

i'll usually eat anything, but the grapefruit cake was beyond horrible. After taking three bites, just in case the grossness was just in that particular spot;) I threw it away.

It is awful.!

This is one of our funny moments we still tell the story...

DW and I in 2000 went for dinner at the Brown Derby...the meal was good, and we were ready to try dessert. Neither of us care for grapefruit, and were cautious about the idea of trying it, but told the waiter this and he convinced me...he said it has a "light, citrus-y taste" (I can still quote his exact words.) Well, we got the cake, and I hated it...it has CHUNKS of grapefruit in it.

After we tasted it I said to DW..."It's not even like we can return it...how can we complain...'Ugh, This Grapefruit cake tastes like Grapefruit!'" That started us both laughing, and then we started coming up with all these other complaints that we could have: "Hey, these chocolate chip cookies are loaded with chocolate chips." "Waiter, who put all these apples in this Apple Pie?" Though I am sure others would never find this as hilarious as we did at the time, we were laughing so hard, we were crying. So, the $7 piece of Grapefruit cake made a terrible dessert, but a fantastic story we tell over and over. (I picture it as one of those stories you tell people and no-one finds it interesting - but I just don't care as is evidenced by the fact I am typing this right now.)

So, the moral of this story - you better really like Grapefruit if you order the grapefruit cake.

If it sounds good to you and someone is willing to bring you one back I would definitely try it. Mine was very moist but much more tart than I expected. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.

Thank you everyone for your opinions and dustmouse, thanks for the picture. It doesn't look like I pictured it in my head and I think I'll pass after reading everyone's reviews on it:thumbsup2 Thanks for saving me $7:thumbsup2

I'm planning on making it for Thanksgiving, so I hope it's good!

The cake looks yummy. I don't like grapefruit but I want to try it.

We don't plan on eating at Brown Derby. I can get it at Starring Rolls, correct?

I think you need to adjust the sugar to the tartness of the grapefruit and to make sure you are using only the meat of the grapefruit not any of the fiber sections.

I had it and it was too bitter for my taste. From a quality standpoint it is very good but personally I didn't care for it.

When Brown Derby opened, the Grapefruit Cake was just delicious. They had so many requests for the recipe, it was printed on derby-shaped cards and passed out to all who asked for it.

The last time we were at Brown Derby, we noted that the cake had changed significantly. It now tastes manufactured and flash frozen. We gather it's being made off site now by an independent contractor. It tastes like it.

We don't even bother dining at Brown Derby now.
