Just got back yesterday and we had a great time. Just a word of advice for anyone that is planning to go in the summer and has not been there yet - take lots of insect repellent! Wow. We are still scratching like crazy.

I came back without any mosquito bites, but DS came back with 100's, or so it seems. He and others went on a night Turtle walk, saw a loggerhead turtle laying eggs, but he was the worse one bit, and that was in spite of using a repellent with deet. However, he did not have long pants, and that would have helped.

Thanks for the tip! We are going to VBR and the bugs LOVE me so I will make sure I'm prepared for the attack!!!!

this is really really worrying me!!!:sad2: we are going in Spet for 5 nights and my DH and DS arent very good with insect/bites etc -- if its bad my life wont be worth living... Any tips? Wil it be bad end of sept time - we are off to SSR for 2 weeks afterwards and dont want to go covered in bites and dont want the holiday to get off to a bad start - should we canx and just go straight to SSR??

We are going there soon, is the problem with insects manily on the beach or wa sthe problem also in the pool area? What repellant seemed to work best, we are bringing our 18 month old.

We went to VB and I did not get any bites which is downright unheard of for me. Apparently I am very tasty to the bugs. I used insect repellant, but I also made sure I didn't use any perfumed hair or body products - unscented everything. Outdoor shops, hunting shops, Bass Pro Shop type places sell shampoo and body wash for dear hunters (I think that is who it is for) that is wonderful for keeping all kinds of insects away. I also use Gold Bond lotion in the green bottle - for some reason the menthol in it acts as a repellant. I really think the unscented hair and body products make a big difference. Of course you can always opt for very lightweight long sleeve shirts and pants. VB is a wonderful resort! Don't let the bugs scare you away.

The campfire and turtle walk are the only places I've ever gotten bit at Vero.

DFIL has a marina and runs a sailing school - FWIW, he has his students eat lemons and tomatoes - he swears that they make you less appealing to bugs.
If you're prone to be a bug bite magnet, you may want to try eating a lemon/tomato rich diet & see if it helps.

Thanks for the info. I will have to add this to my list of things to get. We are going August 18th.

How are the bugs in mid October? Can you take insect repellant on the plane? Which one works best?

My tip - don't go out at night after sundown. I did not have any problems with bites during the day. The only time I noticed anything was in the evening and I did not have repellent on. I did notice a rash once I got to SSR, but I think that was the outside, daytime, heat rash which was quickly quelled with hydrocortisone.

We have been home since Saturday and we are still scratching so bad the bites will bleed we scratch so hard. I can probably count over twenty huge bites on my legs but we also have them on our arms. I think most bites came in the morning on the balcony and after dark around the resort. We also got bit up while playing mini golf in the middle of the afternoon. We did not have insect repellent so it probably wouldn't have been so bad if we had been prepared. They say the summer months are the worst.

Just want to mention though that this won't scare us away. We had a great time and will definately be back. We will just bring the bug spray next time :-)
I just wanted to share this as a tip for those that are going.

I have read many people swearing by products with Picaradin over Deet. Some people say either, and some say neither. Picaradin is supposedly more gentle with children.

If you get a bite(s) DON'T SCRATCH!!!! Get some Benadryl (or 2% Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride generic) Anti-Itch Spray.

I have had little issues with the pesky little critters. I find that if there is a nice breeze day or night typically not an issue. However, if the wind lays down get the repellent ready!:scared1:

We just got back from VB on 6/28 and we actually had more of an issue around the pool. It was interesting my niece and SIL got eaten up but the other 4 of us just got a couple bites (I got mine at the campfire).

How long of a drive is it from VB to Orlando? I have a son in Miami and was wondering if it is about halfway between the two.

Personally.... if the bugs love me... I would be putting on Deet and Pacaridin at the same time, and then wearing long pants and socks/shoes.

I have really not been bothered by them in the past, but this year they did bother me a bit.

Protect yourself... :beach:

From my experience the problem is mainly on the grass at dawn and dusk. Some people have said they get bit in the pool area, but I have never experienced this. Pacaridin seems to be the repellant of choice and the one suited for young children.

I have only had a problem at the pool in the AM prior to 10 AM and late in the dat after 4 PM and only on the poolside closest to the ocean.
