I feel for all of you. I haven't had it yet, but my mother had it in both wrists and I know it was complete murder for her - she had both wrists operated on and I know it was major surgery (I wont go into details, but I really hope that you are spared that). I will say that she could do VERY LITTLE for some weeks afterwards
My mother was a secretary (did a lot of typing, especially in the pre-compture, pre-electric typewriter days) - I believe that is considered to contributing to her problem a lot. I think that her carpel tunnels first acted up when she was pregnant with me, but they got really bad about 10/13 years later.
I have two tips that might help:
- look at your typing style (doing a lot of typing, hitting the keys quite hard and wrist position - if you rest your wrist on the desk or on a pad - can all affect your hands. If you have an office job, they should be able to give you tips about wrist position and posture (it comes under "health and safety" for office jobs).
- if you only experience the problem in one wrist and that is your "dominant" wrist (i.e. your right wrist if you are right handed), then start using your mouse in your other hand (you will need to swap the buttons over in control panel). I switched my mouse over to my left-hand about 7/8 years ago and it got rid of some tendon trouble I had in my right hand (it takes a few days to get used to using your mouse in your left hand, but worth it).
Good luck - I really feel for you and really hope that your problems can be resolved without surgery
