Over the years, and with each successive visit, we've gradually 'upped' our resort level.

When our kids were very young we stayed at All Star Sports. That was the first, and when we went it had just recently opened and was the only All Star resort there. It was perfect for our family...inexpensive and with a pool and food court that suited our toddler and infant just fine.

Next visit...All Star again. Oldest in 1st grade, youngest only 3.

Next visit...POR (Dixie Landings then!). We wanted a better pool area and bicycle rentals available to us, as both our kids were now in elementary school. Paying a little more for the extra amenities made sense.

Our most recent trip, we graduated yet again to the WL. We had visited there during our POR stay for a character breakfast at Artist Point, and I was amazed at how beautiful it was. My husband saw how I loved it, and promised our next visit would be there.

So...with a young teen and 'tween', we stayed 8 nights in August. It was the perfect home for us, as we knew this trip we'd spend more time relaxing and enjoying the resort than ever before. I can't wait to go back.

The value resorts were perfect for us...at one time. Now? I can't imagine staying there again. They just don't have enough of what I want in a Disney vacation now.

Our situation was similar. We stayed out the All Star Sports in 2000 (kids were 7 and 9 yrs old). We stayed in Homerun hotel and the kids loved the Goofy pool. It was our first family trip and the size and amenities were perfect...especially since we weren't at the resort that much. However this past Aug-Sep we stayed at the WL...and we all LOVED it! The theming was great and the access to MK a big plus. I loved how they said 'Welcome Home' at check-in. We will definitely go back there again.

I'm gald I wasn't the only one who doesn't like the POP. We just got back from a stay at the ASMo, and I have to say, while I didn't quite care for it, it was better than the POP. What saved me this trip is the fact that we rented a car. I paid for a preferred room (learned my lesson from the POP) and we were placed in the Fantasia building on the far side of the building, we were closer to the parking lot than to main building. The buses were EXTREMELY crowded and one ride back to the resort I was sitting next to someone who sweated all over me. My shorts were wet from the sweat! :crazy2: The car saved us! To each his own when it comes to where is the best place to stay. I will be renting points again, for my May trip. OLD KEY WEST  here I come!

OzFan-
OKW is our resort of choce as well. It is our favorite. We usually rent points and have groceries delivered. Last trip we rented a car and enjoyed it much more. We will also be returning to Okw next trip in January 2007. We will also return to BC, WL and POFQ in the future.

We stayed at Pop 9/18-25. There was a huge difference in crowd size starting on friday 9/23..I couldnt believe the crowds in the food court and for the buses. I think we might have thought about switching resorts if it was that packed at the begining of our stay. we overall enjoyed Pop . We have stayed at all the moderates and at WL and AKL. Our favorite is AKL we went to visit it this trip and ate lunch in the food court there. I think there were only about 5 other families in the food court with us. It was a great trip and I would stay at Pop again, my kids really liked it.

Kinda off topic-but Carrieberry do you remember what room number you had at WL? We're going soon and it sounds like what we want (bunk beds-Wishes viewing). Thanks.

It was room 4050. Down a very quiet hallway on the 4th floor. At first glance the view is of a little parking lot (for white vans-not guest parking) and a tiny lake or part of a lake, but come 8 or 9 pm-it was great!

I believe that the time time of year you go also influences many of the problems you describe. We went the last week of May and there was no crowds in the foodcourt or waiting for the buses. We never saw any bugs either and believe my DDs would have gone ballistic had they seen any.
Transportation-wise, the biggest advantage POP has is that the POP buses are decicated to just the POP resort. The resort was always clean and we received new soaps and shampoos every day.
Maybe the next time we stay there things won't be so magical, but our trip was as near perferct as one could expect

I'm glad you loved WL. We did not like Pop at all and stayed at WL the next trip and LOVED IT. There is a difference and you do get what you pay for ;)

We had a very different experience. We have stayed in values, moderates, and deluxes and we did not have any problems with POP. Actually, we really enjoyed it.

My sentiments exactly! I absolutely LOVE Old Key West, we get a 2 bedroom and we really have a relaxing vacation! We don't need a vacation from our vacation when we get home. I just wish Fri and Sat nights weren't double the points.

DCrockett- all renting of points is done through a DVC owner and the renter. If you go over to the DVC rent and trade board you can see who has points for rent and how much per point they want. Be sure to read the sticky of the FAQ on renting points at the top-it tells you everything you need to know. Also read the thread titled "A Word to the Wise". If you have any questions about it post on the DVC forum board.

We arrived on 9-23 and also could not believe the crowds!!! Couldn't get a table for breakfast and the room was so far away we couldn't take it back. Used the mugs once a day. We were in the 90's bldg. 4th floor.....bad!!! The pools were packed until midnite and you couldn't sleep for the noise. Last year we loved it, this year we hated it. We are thinking the crowds were due to the free dining plan as in the last seven years it has not been that crowded. Parks were crowded as well. Usually 3 or 4 bus wait for MK in the hot sun (no canopy over the lines for the buses).

We're also just back today. I was with my DH, my DD (11), DS (8), and my DD (4). We checked in on 9/24 and checked out today at 6 am FL time (which would be 3 am Oregon time!) Overall, I found the resort to have many good points, but I'm not sure that I would stay there again.

We checked in on SAt., 9/24; we may have waited 5 minutes in line prior to checking in. I had requested a king room connecting with a double/double room. I was given two double rooms - when I requested a room change, I was told that the resort was overbooked. We had requested the 4th floor, facing away from the pool, in the 50's building; we got the 4th floor, facing the parking lot, in the 80's building. Although I was initially disappointed, I actally liked the location as it was a short walk to the bus stop and the food court (I did cut across a small corner of the parking lot, but it wasn't a huge time-saver.) I don't think I would be very happy with the 90's building - it looked to be a bit of a hike.

ME was great - we were in our room within an hour of leaving the airport ( a bit of a line at the airport but nothing excessive). I was aware that it could take up to an 3 hours for our luggage to arrive, but after about 3 1/2 hrs. of waiting and kids that really needed to brush their teeth and go to bed, I was ready to go find my own stuff.

The bus service was good. The lines were incredible (definitely not covered), but the buses came frequently; we had only one prolonged wait of 25 minutes (there were 3 buses during that time - part of the delay was 3 wheelchairs that needed to be loaded). Most of our waits were less than 10 minutes, and we had several waits of 5 minutes or less.

The rooms were larger than I expected and were as quiet as any WDW resort I've ever visited. As for the famous loud toilets, I could occasionally hear one, but it was nothing excessive. (Perhaps we need to start a list of noisy rooms like they do over on the cruise board. ;) ) I grew up in the Deep South and I've met many cockroaches (none of whom I've liked); there were none spotted in my room (which isn't saying that they weren't there because I know that they're always there!) The room was very clean and mousekeeping was good. We had no towel animals, but the mousekeeper occasionally did cute things with my DD's stuffed animals.

The thing that I definitely dislike about POP is the food court. I have 3 kids and I'm fairly noise-tolerant - that place is deafening. The tip about sitting near the tv's . . . I sat there last night and I found it to be relatively intolerable. We always split up to order our food and met up again to pay; our food was almost always cold as the waits were excessive. I did like the selection and I thought the quality was good.

In POP's defense, we've only stayed in deluxe resorts in the past; obviously, it wouldn't be fair to compare the two. I did love having the two connecting rooms. As we were stumbling to the bus this morning, I asked my two older kids if they liked the resort, and they really didn't. They both agreed that they preferred a pool with a slide.

Sorry about Pop- but I am so giddy that you loved WL!
We will be there this December! :cool1:

We just got back today from a split stay between POP and Port Orleans Riverside. (Arrived 9-23 at Pop) It was SO MUCH FUN!!!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

We love Pop Century~ this was our second stay there and with young kids it's a lot of fun. But I do have to say that after 7 days there we found ourselves dreading having to eat at the food court. The noise was just so overwhelming ~ the volume of the music was so loud one night we could hardly talk at our table. And, like some of the other posters, we have little kids and are used to the Chucky Cheese type "hyper" places.. :rotfl:

Even our children asked to eat in the MK before heading back, because they got tired of the kid meal offerings.

Our room was on 4th floor, which was very quiet. But we were in the farthest away 50s building, so we didn't use our mugs as much this time either.

All we knew was Pop Century ~ which really fits into our budget well, so we like it.

But then, when we went to Port Orleans Riverside, it was so nice and quiet and peaceful that I think we're going to try to stay there next time.

Now, the POR food court got quite busy, too, with hardly a table available esp. at breakfast time. But it was more like a busy restaurant, without all that LOUD background music.

After a long, hectic day at the parks, we really loved the atmosphere at POR.

We jokingly said that the time at Pop was for the kids and now this time at POR was for us. But our dds had so much fun at the pool's waterslide that they want to come back to POR, too.

I'm not putting down Pop Century. It's bright and exciting and really a lot of fun....we loved it in Dec 2004. (It didn't seem as hectic and crowded and loud then...even with the cheerleaders there :cheer2: ). But one solid week of all that high-volume, high-energy atmosphere left us a bit weary. At POR, we all enjoyed coming "home" more, and felt more rested and ready for the next day after being there.

Either way, WDW was a blast!!

I left POP during our stay in May and went over to the All Stars. Just wanted to try POP to see what it was like and I can safely say it wasn't for us. The room noise was loud and the walls were thin. We had a room close to the Hippy Dippy Pool which I paid extra for but was closed for most of the stay due to a chemical issue! Been there, done that- won't be going back. The first time I can actually say I was disappointed in a Disney Property.

To the OP just for clarification -

You had 2 rooms at POP for your family of 3 people? If this is true then you obviously value your space, because most families staying at POP with 3 people would have used 1 room. (yes I know I am generalizing and shame on me). How did you decide on 2 rooms at POP over 1 room at at deluxe?

Glad you were able to make something good happen for your trip at WL.

Alicia

We will be staying at POP during Christmas week :earseek: and I am getting more and more nervous. We have always stayed deluxe (due to our family size), but since we need 2 rooms for this trip, just couldn't justify the expense of 2 rooms deluxe and couldn't all fit in 1. I stayed at the ASMu for a few nights while chaperoning a music days trip, but we didn't use the bus system (we used our own) or even visit the food court that often (although what I saw I liked). I am just so worried that DH and DS (17) will be so frustrated - both were frustrated with the boat transporation at WL last June. Think I will check out the prices at POR, just to see. We have AP and CM discounts, so the rooms are certainly cheap enough at POP....but if I am with 4 or 5 miserable people, I don't know what good that will do.....
