Animal Kingdom Lodge- it was great. The pool was wonderful. Boma was very good and honestly, the fast food place, Mara, was tasty too. Express check in worked like a charm. I got the text with my room number before we even left home for the airport (we are in the midwest)- which was amusing. The bus rides to the parks were all very reasonable. We never waited long and never had trouble getting a seat. We did go very early most mornings and left in early evening before the crush began to exit the parks.

Our magic bands worked without a hitch. I thought we might get tired of wearing them, or annoyed, but it really wasn't a big deal. Charging worked, the room door worked, tickets worked. It was all good and no downside.

Crowds. More than I expected this time of year. We got very lucky with the weather this past week. It was cool the day we arrived and very tolerable for the whole trip until yesterday. It started out about 81 and increased daily to 90. Yesterday got a bit toasty (but we were at Universal by that point :-) ). But back to the crowds. For some reason I tolerate crowds better when the weather is cooler. So as the week went on I got crankier about being around a lot of people. There was nothing dramatic and no specific problems. We've been this time of year in the past and crowds were lighter. I'm not talking about the post crash era specifically. For those of you going during a time when you already know the crowd levels will be high, I do not envy you. Wait times were about what I would expect given the number of people we ran into. I did notice some really significant discrepancies between MDE posted wait times and actual wait times. For instance, we rode Winnie the Pooh with a posted wait time of 35 minutes. It took us 6 minutes to get into the ride car. I watched the 7DMT wait time reach 2 hours at one point but don't know if it was accurate or not. We rode space mountain when the posted wait was 35 minutes. It took us 17 minutes. Those were the two that really caught my attention.

Rope Drop. When exactly does that happen? lol. I can tell you it didn't happen at 9 a.m. on any morning we arrived. We had an 8 a.m. BOG breakfast and by about 8:45 a.m. fantasy land was FULL of people. The people still in the restaurant who thought they were going to be corralled until 9:00 a.m. got an ugly surprise when they came out before 9:00 a.m. and lines at PP and 7DMT were already formed.

FP+. ehhh. We used a couple of the FP I scheduled. I think... Toy Story Mania, Rock n Roller Coaster, 7DMT, Everest and Soarin. Since we did 4 parks in 4 days, we clearly came nowhere near the 12 I had scheduled. I read someone else's review that they were there the same days we were, and not only used all their FP but managed to schedule additional FPs after their initial 3, and found some still available. I have no idea how they did that. I wanted to re-schedule things and checked to see if could change on at least 2 days. Both times there were still FP available, but not for anything I would want to do- or that had any kind of a standby line at all. Basically we used 5 out of 12. The app didn't seem to work consistently while we were there.

Magic Kingdom. We noticed that Pirates and HM both were looking spruced up since our last visit. I generally don't pay much attention to refurb schedules so don't know when it happened last, but it was a welcome surprise. Those are two old favorite rides.

We used the 7DMT FP for obvious reasons. Good thing too. It was fun- while it lasted. I had read it was short, and I knew some people were not impressed. However, I tend to be pretty easy going about rides and expectations so was expecting to love it. But no. I mean, I didn't hate it and I am glad I did it. But when we came to a stop my husband (who knew NOTHING about the ride) said "Is that it?" ha ha. We took the exit and looked with pity at all the people standing in the 110 minute line. If I waited 2 hours for that ride, I would HATE it. Since we used a FP+ it was okay. But I won't bother with it again unless there is no line and nothing else I want to ride.

Animal Kingdom. Great and fun and love the animals, as always. I have to say the crowds were a drag here. Just too many people crammed on too many narrow pathways and too few shaded places to sit.

Epcot Flower and Garden. It was nice and calm. Flowers and butterflies don't seem to lend themselves to drunken debauchery the way food and wine do. :-) Epcot was good. We did use a FP for Soarin here. I think that is the only one we used at Epcot. Epcot was not a rope drop day so we didn't ride test track. I had planned to do that at RD, but let the family sleep in instead. The standby lines for TT were too long for me after all these years. People seemed more laid back and happy at Epcot. It could be due to the large amount of open space there. People don't seem to feel quite so on top of each other there, even when it is crowded.

Hollywood Studios. There isn't much to say. Probably because there isn't much to do. ;-) We've been at Christmas when there at least the lights going on. We aren't big show people or parade folks. We like rides and interactive things more than sitting and watching something. Even so, we've done a few shows there for lack of anything else to kill time before a dinner reservation. That is really what it comes down to for us at this point. RnRC and ToT. I'm really not convinced that those 2 things are really worth the $$, time and effort. The kids (grown up kids) said they want to skip it next time.

Which really brings me down to the question a lot of other long timers have been posing on this board. Are we going back to WDW? I'm not really sure. We had a great vacation and enjoyed ourselves. There was nothing horrible, nothing we got upset about. On the way home my husband and I talked about the idea of just doing Disneyland if we get the urge to Disney again. I grew up on the west coast and started going to DL in 1967 so it is familiar and comfortable, even after all these years.

It isn't a big "we are never going back" decision. It isn't like we came home disappointed, because we didn't. We really enjoyed the trip. It just seemed that we spent tons more money than ever before, and although we had a good time... in the end, it just felt like too much money for what we actually wound up doing.

Money wise it seems like you spent a lot by staying on site and eating at Disney restaurants frequently.

If you want to save money and cut down on spending a ton, I'd cut those out. Of course if you don't go to Disney a lot though, then it would kind of take away from the experience.

We have AP's and go frequently..so we certainly get our money's worth. But we never plan on spending a lot during the trip. Save money by staying offsite and eat outside of Disney. I don't want to know how much some people are spending when their eating at Disney everyday and having reservations lol. We'll do a Disney restaurant every once in awhile, but don't feel the need to chose it frequently.

Very true about the restaurants and staying on site. We've done budget trips many times and are really good at it. I could do it again in a heartbeat if it was necessary- or would actually make a difference to how we feel about the vacation after it is over. It isn't just the amount we spent that made us think about not going back to Orlando. It is more the overall experience these days. I am sure there is a little nostalgia working its way in here. And yes- I absolutely do regret getting a 4 day ticket and using one of those days at Hollywood Studios because it feels like an absolute waste of $300 (for a family of 4) to basically do 3 rides. Lesson learned.

Dining at Disney does play into the $$ aspect for sure. Disney restaurants are kind of a crap shoot when it comes to quality and consistency. They are pretty consistent about charging more money than anyone in their right mind would pay in the "real world" for a meal. But we know that going in so there aren't any surprises or regrets that went along with our plans for food.

We did do a few reservation sit down meals. Did BOG for breakfast for the experience and benefit of being up in fantasy land when the park opens. It was fun and I am glad we did it. We knew the food would be underwhelming. On the other hand, we went to Columbia for dinner one night and oh MAN was that incredible food. About half or less of what you would pay for an okay meal at Disney. I think Disney gets newbies and families that don't have cars or don't want to hassle with leaving the property. I have to say Disney doesn't skimp on portion size though. I wonder too when I see people making multiple reservations per day at Disney sit down places, how much food gets left behind. We could rarely finish a meal and we do not eat like birds. More like piranha since we have a college age son.

So we could easily spend less but I'm not sure it would change our overall enjoyment or perception of the value- if that makes sense. It may not. :drinking:

We just arrived back from a week also... We were there from May 2-8... Every time we have been to Disney World has been in May and we were also surprised at the crowds this year ... They seemed much heavier than past May's ... The worst days were Sunday the 3rd at Hollywood Studios and Monday the 4th at Animal Kingdom was just ridiculous it was so crowded... Tuesday the 5th at Magic Kingdom was also so crowded! ... It wasn't until Epcot on Wednesday the 6th that we finally had a light crowd day ...

I have no idea how people do it during the summer ...

Thanks for such great detail. I feel much like you about many things.

I love the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We could easily stay there and never set foot in a Disney park. Actually one year we spent four nights there and only went to MK one day. We spent the rest of the time enjoying the resort or checking out stuff offsite.

We skipped DHS during our last trip. We didn't miss it much.

Thank you for such a complete review.

We will be there this week next year. We like the heat, but aren't fans of crowds. It's stressful to keep track of so many kids en masse.

Our next trip will be our most expensive by far. I'm quite concerned we might drive away at the end of our trip wondering if we got our money's worth.

I'm sure you'll get a few responses that question your review or why you did things, but I appreciate your honest assessment.

I find spending less definitely helps my perception of value. When we went in February it was so crowded. The parks were awful. But we got half of the flights for "free" with points, stayed offsite, and ate most meals offsite. So I was ok with the trip. It was better than shoveling snow in NJ ;)

Thanks for the overview, very interesting. I really want to stay at AKL at some point.

funny. we went to animal kingdom monday the 4th and tuesday the 5th at magic kingdom and didn't think it was overcrowded at all. we rode tons of rides without FP all last week with each less than 30 min wait and never made a rope drop (Space Mountain, Splash Mountain 4 times, Soarin, Pooh, Peter Pan, Big Thunder, Test Track, Toy Story, Everest x 5 to name a few). Never ended up using all 3 of our FP in one day because it was mostly unnecessary. We did use FP for ToT and RnRC when the posted wait was 20min and that was at 10:35am - 11:35am.

Thanks for your review. I love AKL as well. It's definitely different from your average hotel.

I have to agree regarding DHS, and I'm glad to hear it's not just us. 2 trips ago, we walked in thinking we'd spend the day there, and we walked out after only 1 hour. If we go again, it will be because we have hoppers, but if not, we won't be returning any time soon.

Glad to hear you liked Flower and Garden at Epcot. We're going next in March of 2016 and looking forward to that event.

I appreciate your honest review and I worry about whether or not our next trip will be "worth it". It's really about the "value". If you spent a lot but then also got a lot out of the trip, then it would have been worth it, right? We spend so much to go on a WDW trip - time, planning effort, as well as money - that I want to walk away from it knowing that all of that investment paid dividends. So I read reviews like yours to help for our next trip. I'm glad we decided to drive and to eat in our villa more, rather than eating on site and spending $1200-1500 on plane tickets. I really hope that my planning will pay off.

I've been wondering lately if this trip will be "worth it." It'll be by far our most expensive trip. Even saving up our spending money right now.....at times I've wanted to cancel just because of how much I have to save just to eat.

My kids have been begging for this trip since our last trip in 2011. It's probably going to be our last big hoorah. I may try to do a mother/son and mother/daughter trip but nothing this big again.

I have to say I agree. I am leaving for home today and for the first time, it is not a sad goodbye, but more of a " I am not sure it was worth the planning and expense ". Don't get me wrong, I am a disney addict but the heat, crowds, and my own not feeling well from the heat, took a toll. AK was so horribly crowded and hot that I gave up and hopped to another park. My next trip will definately be a cooler, les crowded. Time of year.

We haven't been since Nov 13 (in the middle of the FP+ switchover) for many of the reasons you listed. WDW has lost its magic for us after that trip. I keep thinking that maybe we should give it another chance---and we probably will but only as part of a wider offsite trip---Universal etc. WDW was just too frustrating for us last time. We are doing a Disney cruise next month (very excited!) and will likely choose Disneyland if we want a park fix in the near future.

As a long time Dizer I'm surprised that you didn't know about RD. The official opening time may be 9:00, but for several years they have been letting guests thru the turnstiles/tapstiles anywhere from 10-20 minutes early. That's why the much hyped preopening breakfast at BOG is pretty much useless for beating the crowds to SDMT or A&E if your ADR time is after 8:20 or so.

We came away from our trip feeling much as you do, and that was after a week of relatively low crowds and using all of our FPs. We still weren't able to do as much as we've been able to do on all of our previous trips. Its time for a break from WDW. I'm really looking forward to our upcoming DL trip. Back to the land of the legacy FP and not needing to book ADRs 6 months in advance!

Don't get me wrong... We rode everything we wanted and rode them multiple times as well but we still felt the crowds were much heavier this May than in years past...

Even the CM at our hotel was talking to us about how they were at 100% capacity and they typically are not in early May ...

The CM at EE was telling us how the crowds were unusually large as well...

The crowds didn't take away from our fun but they were definitely more than what we are used to for this time of year...

Frog, sorry to hear you weren't feeling well. That doesn't help at all. One of us was fighting a cold on our MK and HS days and she was really dragging. We have been just about every time of year imaginable, including spring break and Christmas week, so I know I am not exaggerating how crowded it felt at AK. If we had hoppers I might have tried it this time.

I should probably clarify that despite the crowds, wait times and not utilizing FP+ completely... we still rode everything we wanted to except Test Track. One of the reasons I didn't use all the FP selections I made is that when we arrived at rope drop we were able to get a lot done early and it made sense to ride standby in the morning and move on to a different ride based upon wait times. So when the FP time came around, we didn't need to use it. The first couple of days I tried to reschedule things when I realized this was going to happen. But the MDE app was just not up to it. I could have cancelled our FP + but I wasn't willing to do that if I couldn't replace them with something attractive because we wanted to ride some things twice if there was nothing else available. And that was not a big deal to skip as we've done it (and everything else) previously. If we had rope dropped at TT we would have easily hit that one too, so it was a conscious decision on my part to sleep in and skip it. Our family doesn't go every year. We seem to go about every 3-5 years. So I don't think it is burn out.

Sorry- I was being silly and didn't explain myself. I did know about it and it wasn't a problem for us at all. And it really still is good for at least getting you up into fantasy land at park opening so you can take a leisurely approach to things. :-) But there were a LOT of people in BOG who had no idea and were completely stunned when they came out and saw the lines.

What is Columbia? Is it on or off Disney property?
