We got back from our trip last night, we we at AKL from May 30-June 4th (then went to Cocoa Beach for a few days). We had a GREAT time! We arrived in Orlando on May 29th and stayed the first night at the Grosvenor (yuck) then got up early and checked into the AKL at about 9 am to get our park tickets. There weren't any lines for check-in, just walked right up to the CM. Our room wasn't ready, but when we got back from AK we found out we were in room 5547 which is Zebra trail right where the Arusha Savanna and the Uzima Savanna meet.

First thing I did was open the curtain and what do I see, the PEOPLE PEN! I was a little upset. We were paying extra for a deluxe room and we get a crappy view, so we thought. We were hot and tired from AK (it was about 95 that day) so I thought I would give it a day and see if it was ok and then if we didn't like it, we would switch. Well, we didn't switch rooms, the animial viewing was AWESOME. We had animals outside our room all the time. There were two antelok cattle that stayed right out side our room the entire trip. We always had giraffe, usually 3 of them or more. We saw zebra, wildebeast, bongos, Tommies, all kids of birds and even had an ostrich sleep in our little corner one night. The giraffe slept there every night. I think we saw every animal they had. It was great.

The room itself was good, not overly large, but ok. We had bunk beds, queen bed and a day bed. Our room could have been a connecting room, so the alcove near that door made a great spot to store our luggage. The beds sit high enough off the floor that you could store stuff under there, too. The dresser space was ok. I got all of our clothing in the drawers. There is storage space under the sink area that was a great place to store towels, extra clothing, etc. Under that was an open area that worked out great for keeping dirty clothing out of the way.

Our room was spotless. It was cleaned early in the day, around 10 am or so, so it was clean when we got back from the parks midday. It was very quite and pretty priviate where we were. If we were sitting in the chairs on our balcony we couldn't see any other rooms, standing at the railing, you could see them.

We thought the buses were great. With the exception of one bus, the longest wait we had at AKL for a bus was 8 minutes (we timed our waits just to see). The one wait was 25 minutes, but the bus that was suppose to come broke down, so it wasn't a big deal. We had one bus the entire time where people had to stand, other then that, there were always empty seats.

The CM's were nice, no crabby ones, but I wasn't overly impressed with the service. It was good, but not outstanding. I hearded for years about Disney being the benchmark for service, it wasn't any better then other nicer resorts we have been to. Overall, it was a great resort!

Glad you had a nice stay. We were there right before you -- we checked out on May 29. Our kid had the best time there, even though we did not have a savannah-view room. And you are right about the service -- professional and polite, but nothing spectacular. Then again, compared with the so-called "customer service" we receive at most retail places outside out WDW, even the not-so-spectacular customer service we received at WDW was a breath of fresh air -- at least we were treated with civility and politeness and respect.

Again, glad you had a nice stay. What did you not like about your first hotel?

we were there on the 2nd til the 3rd...if you saw a boy carrying a minnie and a girl carrying a sorcerer mickey, then that was us!

It sounds like you had a great time. We will be staying for two nights (savannah view) in Feb. How was being on the fifth floor? Everyone says the 2nd and 3rd floors are the best. I never seem to get what I request and I'm afraid we will end up on the higher floors.

Thanks for sharing your photos! :flower:

Great pics! I also saw your reply on "small vent about seating for family of 5" then noticed our kids are same ages, ours are dd's 12,10,10. Anyway, were you on the dining plan? Do you have any recommendations for restaurants, or perhaps warning of places to avoid? We're going in Sep, only 4 nights, but will have dining plan. Thanks.

Sounds like you had a great trip! I just love the AKL...I can't wait to get back there in Spetember/October. Thanks for the report and sharing pictures :flower:

Great pic's Thanks, we have not tried AKL yet but very interested. You had a great spot! I think we would prefer the higher floor too. Hmmmm, maybe next year?

I think for where we were located, the 5th floor was ideal. If we had been lower, the bush in front of the savannah (see the pict of the people pen) where they were growing new trees would have blocked most of our view. We were also able to see into the next savannah over much better being higher up. We were just down the hall from the elevators that took you to Mara, the Pool, etc and never really waited for the elevators more then 30 seconds or so. I liked our view and with being on the 5th floor and where we were, no one could really see into our room where on the lower levels, we could see into their rooms.

Yes, we were on the dining plan. All the places we ate were good. We ate at Flame Tree at AK, Chef Mickey, Pecos Bills, CRT for dinner, Mara a few times, Typhoon Lilly's at TL, Liberty Tree Tavern, Teppanyki, Whispering Canyon. Of all the places we ate, CRT and Teppanyki had the best food. Your DD's would love the Castle and the reservations for dinner aren't as hard to get. If your children are sensitive to teasing, Whispering Canyon might not be a good idea. Our oldest is very sensitive to that and got picked on by the waitress and pouted the rest of the night. He is almost 13 and is showing signs of beeing a moody teenager already!

For the meals, most of the meals we ordered 3 or 4 meals for the 5 of us and had PLENTY of food. I did a quick review on the rest. board about that. We were able to spread our meals over 6 days from a 5 night stay and have breakfast, lunch and dinner each day by sharing meals. We had a few credits to burn at the end so we ordered more meals, way too much food!

We didn't leave much time for doing things at the hotel. It rained pretty hard on Friday and that kept us at the hotel and the kids did the hunt for the hidden Mickey's and DH and I wandered around the hotel some. We wanted to get to the story telling, but it didn't work out with our PS's.

Your post makes me miss AKL. Glad you had a great time and thanks for posting the pictures.

Did you swim? If so did your kids like the pool? I have dd's 8 and 10 who really want a resort with a pool slide!!

The kids swam a few times. It rained the whole time we were there and the pool was closed a couple times because of that. They liked the pool. The slide was ok, but we had been to the water parks and after that, the slide wasn't as fun.
