I had no idea the Boardwalk was notorious for slow/crowded bus service - too bad I had to learn this on the MNSSHP night!
MikeD - I would DEFINITELY go to Islands of Adventure for one day. It is so much fun for children of all ages and adults. The theming at each of the 5 lands is magnificent. Seuss Landing is like walking around in a Dr. Seuss book - the Cat in the Hat ride is great (and the movie is coming out soon). Boys especially, but also girls, will love Marvel Super Hero Island with the Superman ride and heroes walking around. Toon Lagoon has all kinds of comic strip characters going back quite some time. There's also Jurassic Park that has a great water ride and The Lost Continent.
We moved hotels to on-site because we had 3 days there but you could easily get transportation from your Disney Hotel (check the Transportation Board).
CurlyQ - The buses from AKL were fine - still up to 20 minutes wait but at least you don't have to share it with another resort.
stink - The monorails are more frequent than the 20 minute apart buses but you could still wait up to 10 minutes at the GF, get off at T&TC, line up for the EPCOT monorail and wait up to 10 minutes, walk to front of gate by 20-30 minutes. Don't forget it takes awhile to get through the front gate and they do bag searches as well.
hockeymom - We switched to on-site at Universal. Nothing beats a 5 minute walk from your room to the front gate! We did rent a car to drive to Busch Gardens. 5 years ago we rented a car at WDW and to me it's just so much easier walking from the parks to the bus stop and zoning out on the bus than walking over to the parking lot, finding the car, and figuring out how to get to the hotel. Especially when there are a million other cars trying to get out. I just wish Disney would add more buses. I think 10 minutes is a more acceptable interval than 20.
