Just back(6/26-7/2)...a little sad

I think this goes to show that the lines can be the luck of the draw from day to day, and park to park. We were there the same time as you (6/27 - 7/2) and actually thought the crowds were much lighter and lines much shorter than the same time in past years. We spent no more than 15 minutes in standby for FEA in the middle of the day, even though the wait time was listed as 30 minutes. We did find that the daily storms lasted longer than they usually do and more people seemed to decide to leave the parks and go back to their resorts. As a result I think that there were probably more people attempting to ride the headliners via standby since they might have been rained out of their FPs the previous day(s). However, we were shocked by how thin the crowds were at Epcot. Normally the Wine Cellar in Germany is packed and we were the ONLY two people in there when we got our wine. We were in there for probably 20 minutes and the only other people who came in were a group of 3 guys who walked in and walked out. We asked the CMs there why it was so dead and they said that it is always a pretty light week right before the 4th of July.

OP here-- I can fully admit our circumstances were a perfect storm of issues that worked against us. First as I stated we used complimentary tickets which meant we couldn't book FP in advance because the tickets weren't linked to MDE until we got there and claimed them. We went to Disney Springs on arrival to do this Sunday afternoon but our FP choices were limited. At Epcot I did get Soarin FP (test track and frozen were not available) and then 2 lesser ones--Nemo and Spaceship Earth--but couldn't get them too early, mid afternoon. We did Test Track at rope drop twice with 2nd time taking longer than anticipated. Girls decided not to do Frozen because of the 90 min wait. And --we were a party of 5 as my parents were there too-but in general I looked for FP for 3 or 5 when booking.

At MK I did get FP for Buzz and Speedway in the am, couldn't get Thunder Mountain until 7:45. Speedway and TM were my girls' must dos. We tried for SDMT at rope drop and did it but it ate 90 min of our morning, causing us to miss and need to reschedule the Speedway FP--for 6:30 pm. In the morning we also walked into Ariel w 15 min posted wait and it took 45 min to get on-again due to complete standby stoppage. So SDMT and Ariel ate up nearly 3 hours.

I had scheduled 12:30-1pm lunch reservations anticipating needing a mid day break from heat. I didn't anticipate the big long storms that would eat up the afternoons. Monday we made it to 5 pm at Epcot before the storm but Tues at MK it stormed from 3-8 pm. Not sure evening fireworks happened either day since we left in the storms and it didn't let up enough for us to consider going back only to have them end up cancelled. I anticipated the daily afternoon thunderstorm but these were definitely a bit of a bigger longer deal than usual. Had I predicted that we would have skipped lunch and worked harder to get rides in.

Yes I could have worked harder to figure out FP times--but my goal for trip was for all 3 of us to be off our phones--so I didn't want to be spending all my time trying to rearrange things. And i figured out that having dining reservations limits your FP options because you can't book 2 things that overlap at all, even 5 min.

Like I said--not really complaining. It is what it is and Disney can certainly do things their way. It just doesn't work as well for us now. Still grateful we have all the memories that we do.

And the Universal HP rides/areas--unbelievable. Loved them. And Jimmy Fallon--which does have a virtual line pass similar to FP+ that I was easily able to change later and later throughout the day because we got caught up doing other things--great ride! I do think they were actually phasing in EXPass at Forbidden Journey last Friday --there was an extra line happening -- but it wasn't enough to affect standby yet.

In reference to the bolded above -- can you provide some examples? How and when do you know that the SB will be short?

With the Touring Plans app, each attraction would have a comment on Ride Now or Wait -- Example: Tower of Terror Posted 60 minutes, Expected 50 mins" WAIT: Line will be shorter at 2:15 (30 mins)" etc. I used this during our trip (6/19-30).

Have they improved FP+ since 2014, because the most we ever got was 4 a day on our last trip. Not doubting this at all, just want to know the strategy, if there is one, behind getting that many FPs :stir: I will also say that we probably (definitely didn't) utilize our FP+ to their maximum capacity on our last trip. We also had a family member, who lives in Orlando, touring the parks with us so we had to change our strategy a little bit--don't ask why :rolleyes1 story for another day  Okay edited to add that I actually read and didn't skim anomamatt's post and I saw where he/she mentioned the FAQ's on FP+. Guess it pays to actually read and comprehend things, but you know...lazy :coffee:

I don't know how things have changed since 2014, but you can get FPs for most attractions as 4th, 5th, ... You might not get exactly what you want at that specific moment, but you can always get something worthwhile.

It does take time to be able to fully utilize the FP system, which is why it works. And it's why people are standing in line when you can still get a FP for that ride at that exact moment...

We stay at Disney resorts a few times a year, including summer, and have never seen a resort pool crammed with people.

The only time we experienced a crowded pool was at CSR one June. It was craziness! Thankfully, that was only once. We do enjoy our pool time.

This is an unfortunate side effect of the new system. Stop and people-watch for a few minutes at the MK and you will see 45,000 people staring at their phones. Given how many little details WDW has if you take the time to look, it is sad to see so many people glued to their screens. "Life from 18 inches" is what I call it.

While the FP system is great WHEN you have a FP . .it does stink when you don't because there is no way to determine how many people "show up" in the FP line at any given time because there is that hour window.

The standby lines "have" to stall to let Fast Pass people through. What if 200 people show up at the EXACT SAME TIME and get in the FP line? The standby line suffers.

There is no way to determine that .. so a posted wait time is just a guess. You could wait less or more than it. It just depends who does (or doesn't) show up to use their Fast Passes while you are in line.

Personally I've found it refreshing. No "mad dash" to get a paper fast pass and nice to not wait in 3 lines, especially when visiting with small children. Just pick Fast Passes for the rides you know have long lines and go from there and try and utilize 4th (or more Fast Passes in the afternoon).

But .. if your goal at WDW is to get on as many rides as you want .. then maybe a different park is for you . .Disney is so busy now that getting on a ton of rides in a day isn't a reality unless you have a super plan and rush around.

I did not realize you could not get advanced FP on the tickets you were using. That would certainly impact our trip. It sounds like you had some very bad luck/long lines- longer than we had the week before- I can understand that being frustrating.

When we go in the summer, we usually hit rope drop and get as much done as possible, then go to the hotel for a rest in the afternoon, then come back in the evening and stay till closing. We usually have good luck with late night crowds. Also, we miss some of the rain storms that way. If we tried to go straight through afternoon till night, I think we would be exhausted.

In my experience, if it is storming in the evening at MK they will postpone the fireworks but will eventually have them, even if later. I'm not sure about Epcot- we have been lucky with storms in Epcot being done by Illuminations time.

I can understand if the crowds have discouraged you and you are ready for a break. The crowds didn't bother me this time, but the heat did- more than when we go in August, even. I will definitely be back, but not sure if I want a summer trip again.

In reference to the bolded above -- can you provide some examples? How and when do you know that the SB will be short?

Thinking mostly of MK here- rides that had long waits in the afternoon had shorter waits during and after the fireworks. OP mentioned Small World, I know we rode it, HM, POTC, Mermaid, Pooh later at night without much wait at all. We were able to get extra FP for the evening for Space Mtn, Buzz, Everst, RnRC, TSMM.

I don't know how things have changed since 2014, but you can get FPs for most attractions as 4th, 5th, ... You might not get exactly what you want at that specific moment, but you can always get something worthwhile.

I think in the past you had to go to a kiosk to add more fast passes same day. I never did that because the kiosk lines looked longer and slower-moving than attraction lines, so I didn't see the point. Every time I walked past those kiosk lines, I heard cast members laboriously explaining FP to bewildered guests. I was sympathetic to those who didn't understand the process. But I don't want to be in line behind them.
Now you can add/change FP right on your phone so it is way more convenient. Which leads to this point....

Yes, I am on my phone more with this system, changing FP, adding FP, checking times, checking email to see if one of our FP attractions is down. Also, being able to check wait times does help with managing wait times. I can remember the days, pre-cell phone, where you would think about riding something and have to get everyone all the way across the park just to find out there was an unusually long wait there. Now you can check instantaneously before you head in that direction. But it does mean checking your phone.

I think it's admirable that OP was trying not to use phones for the trip. But if I were going to try it, then I would have to decide from the outset that it would be a different kind of trip. That either you would enjoy/experience/soak in details and atmosphere and not try to ride much ( I've had trips like that and they're great) or you would just know you would be waiting more than you would if you used your phone.

Thanks for the response. How accurate was that app?

We stay at Disney resorts a few times a year, including summer, and have never seen a resort pool crammed with people.

I have seen packed pools at Beach Club, Wilderness Lodge & Poly and have been turned away from BLT pool due to crowd levels (we moved to Contemporary pool which was much less crowded). Many times all of the tubes have been taken in the lazy river section of Stormalong Bay & swimming without one can be intimidating unless you are willing to fight your way through the tubes in deep water.

The touring plans app, does that come with the MDE? And can I get an MDE without having tickets?
Touring plans app has nothing to do with MDE. So no. You download it and there is a fee for the full website

MDE odds available to anyone. No tickets or trip of any kind required

If certain CMs do a lousy job of managing the FP line versus the standby, I would lodge a complaint about them, either during or after the trip. If they really are doing a lousy job and favoring one line too much over another, Disney could correct that. Or if Disney's policies need correction, maybe that will happen if enough people complain.

I was going to complain, but I was so irritated that I forgot to get her name. It was really irritatating to see no one coming down the FP line and we were being held there. Let folks go from stand by when no one is coming.

We're planning on next trip, and my daughter is starting to talk about the rides she doesn't want to go one. I told her "if we're not riding rides, why are we going?" When my kids were little, we would take them to the state fair. They'd ride a couple of rides, walk around and then be ready to go. But when its $8 for an adult, and $4 for children, that's fine. But when i'm spending hundreds of dollars a day just for tickets to be in a park, i'm darn well going to try to do everything I possibly can. Spending that kind of money to ride three rides doesn't justify the money spent in my book.

It's hard not to have that attitude based on the cost for sure.

I love Disney .. my family could spend a day there and not get on many rides but still have an enjoyable day experiencing the ambience, the shows, the "extras" (like street performers), the food, the characters. My last few trips have been with my son (2, then 3, then 4) .. We know we aren't going to do everything .. it is just impossible without dragging him through the streets.
But I get the enjoyment of watching him stand in awe at the big structures he is seeing for the first time .. the larger-than-life characters .. the realization that we get to go "INSIDE" that giant ball standing in front of us. To me, the EXTRA cost is worth it.

That being said, my family (and my nephews) went to a small little amusement park in Wisconsin. It has a ton of those "old school" rides ... a boats that go in a circle. A helicopter that goes up and down (like Dumbo) . .a train ride .. a merry-go-round .. bumper boats. It costs us $12 a person .. and if you didn't want to go on any rides (like the grandparents) .. you don't have to pay a dime.
And it was awesome. They loved that day and we were only there 5 hours (the park is only open 5-6 hours a day).

So if your kids love rides like that .. there are other options than expensive Disney. Heck .. try out LEGOLAND (only 40 minutes away from WDW). On our last trip, my son and all the other boys we went with (friends we vacationed with) loved that day because the rides were more suited to their age and they could ride on them with no wait and ride them over and over and over again. There were probably less than 1000 people at that park that day. It was pretty fun day for them, but for the adults, the "magic" wasn't there. It was just another amusement park with lego-themed rides.

So . .if you and your kids love RIDES .. then maybe Disney is not for you. If you like the ambience of Disney and are a huge Disney nut .. then maybe Disney is worth it .. even if you only get on 7-8 rides in a day. To me, paying double the admission price to a WDW park (over say a "soulless" Six Flags park) is worth it. Especially when I know 75% of the rides at a Six Flags park I can't go on with my small children.

I am sorry about your trip. I feel you pain. If you don't plan way in advance you will have a tough time. I know it is so hard knowing what you want to do for an entire trip 2 months in advance and then when you get closer if you want to change something - it is almost impossible.

We're planning on next trip, and my daughter is starting to talk about the rides she doesn't want to go one. I told her "if we're not riding rides, why are we going?"

I agree, that is a total trip-killer!!!! Did you tell your DD this? I would definitely remind her that Parents Pay for Disney, and Kids Don't Get to Pick What They're Not Riding. Unless of course it's a medical issue or 150% guarantee she will barf on everyone.

But "I don't wanna go on _______________.. that's BOOOOOORING!" uh no. *DJ record scratch* Say bye-bye to the Disney vacation! ;) Someone in your party will always consider x attraction boring/awful/too much/too little. You cannot plan like that! There must be compromise! If Kid #1 wants to go on Mad Tea Party, then Kid#1 has to put up with Winnie-the-Pooh - especially if there aren't enough adults to cater to the small people to escort them all over the place.

I kinda disagree with this and I am lucky my mom does to if a ride is going to terrify the rider no matter what the age it is not a magical trip for anyone

No one is talking about putting a child on a ride that scares them. They are talking about kids cranking up the old whine machine due to a boring ride
