July Patriotic Warriors!!

Hi All

Good Luck Carrie

Amanda - A good pair of shoes can definately make a difference. If you find you really like these you can probably get another pair online or at the outlet mall in a few months for less money when the styles change.

Stan - good to hear training is going well

Kathy and Jim - Sound like thing are coming along nicely. According to McMillian Running Calculator For a 3:30 half marathon you should be doing you Long Distance at between 17:25 and 18:25. So your long runs of 17:55 are right in line. Just remember to get some shorter workouts at closer to your race pace and you'll be fine.

AFM - Still plugging along with my Walk/run plan for October. The workouts Monday and Wednesday went well. My average pace today for the 2 miles main workout was 14:45. I'm shooting for 15:00 half marathon pace so I'm in the right ballpark. Even factoring in my 1/2 mile warmup and cooldown my average was 15:15.

I'm feeling a little bit bummed because I was originally supposed to be out of town the first part of this week counceling church camp. But, because I missed classes early with the medical problems I didn't feel right missing any more days (even though my boss never said I couldn't go). I've been doing it for 6 years prior to this and really enjoy the time away. There will always be next year though.

Thanks Jeremy for the support.

John and I are doing our long walks on Sunday's and we are doing our faster walks on Tuesday and Friday. The heat and humidity of course here in southwest Florida is bad, but we have gotten some what used to it. In October it should be much better. John does not have a problem because he rides his bicycle 90 - 100 miles just on Saturday so he is in good shape. I am the one who has to work at it, but it is coming.

Kathy - It's good to know you're getting used to the heat. I'm sure not getting used to it up here in Ohio.

Today I made it official, I signed up for the Columbus half marathon on October 17th. The price goes up next Sunday so I needed to be making a decision. I knew I was probably going to do it but I wasn't sure if I wanted to sign up as a walker or a runner. My 5 mile Walk/Run went well today, in spite of the heat, so I decided to sign up as a runner.

Today's long run averaged a 15:44 min. mile compared to Wednesdays 14:45. My running wasn't that much slower but my walking segments were longer and slower.

Just received our Road ID bracelets today. Logged in all the information they want before we wear them tomorrow for our walk. Now we will not have to carry our license and insurance cards with us.
We even got my Dad one just in case. If he can remember to wear it when he is on his bicycle that would be great.

Kathy

Good Morning Everyone,

I started our walk this morning at 5:45am. Temperature was 80 and the humidity 89%. John got out before me and by the time he finished he did 11.92 miles. We did 4.91 miles together with an average pace of 16:52.:cool1: I mapped out a route of what I would have to do for the Wine and Dine relay. I surprised myself that I kept up that pace and my heart race was not high.

Hope everyone has a successful workout.

Kathy

Apparently I put too much weight on the calf machine because they are KILLING me!!! Next week I focus on doing the situps and pushups I need to do for my PT test. Gotta work on form so I can pass.

Unit PT this Friday - should be a run for time (usually 30 minutes). Hope they're not running the incinerator!!! :rotfl:

Amy your PT sounds like really hard work!!!! I hope your calves ease off.

Kathy I think it's brilliant that you are your hubby can walk such different lengths, but still get some in together. That must take some planning! Glad your road ID has come, that will make it much easier for you all.

Jeremy whoop whoop for you signing up and even more so for taking the plunge and picking to run! That's fab and I'm sure you'll be even more eager to go now you have a date planned.

Amanda it must feel great to be all booked and ready to go. I hope you love it there and go for DVC- i'll keep dreaming.... or live my dream through you.... no pressure!

Carrie can't wait to see how you got on, been thinking about you!!!

Stan pleased to read you're still ticking over on mileage and injury free. keeping popping in because it's great to hear happy healthy running stories!

TRACY where are you up to with things?

me on a bit of a high after running 9.75 miles yesterday in 1hr 23 so averaging 8:33. I've never averaged that sort of speed over long distance although have to admit that a lot of the run was downhill so i'm sure that helped. Trying to work out if my Nike's need replacing soon as they don't feel as bouncy but there's not that much wear on them. Someone did tell me that Nike's are only good for 3-4 months compared to Asics 6. Hmmm.

Oh my word, how complicated can it get trying to decide whether to get life insurance, critical illness, income protection, employment protection or a combination of any of the above... then which home and contents...... my head is scrambled!!!!!!

Ha all
The weather broke this morning. It was 60 degrees when I went outside. I'm modifying my plan slightly from what the call for. A week from Wednesday, I'm supposed to do my first 3 min. walk 2 min run, up from 3 min walk, 1 min run. I'm worried going from 1 minute to 2 minutes straight of running, so I decided to up this workout to 3 min. walk 1:15 run. It went well. The cool weather definately helped. I still though have this little voice in my head saying "What are you doing? You can't run this far! You need to go back to walking" Right now, it's cropping up close enough to the end of the run cycle that I can push through to the end. Right now, It's not physical, it mental. When my running time is up and start walking, I feel like I could have went further. So, I'm looking forward to the end of the running segment but by the same token, after 3 minutes I'm ready to get back to the running.Hopefully, if I can extend the running distance again to 1:30, 2 minutes won't seem like quite a jump. The 3 min. walking and 2 min. running is what they suggest for the race.

Kate - the race is Saturday. So, right now I'm just freaking out. :scared1:

Sorry, I seem to have a hard time coming here and concentrating when I am totlally freaked out about a race. Somewhere inside I know i'll be ok, but there's that other place in me......:scared1:

4 days from now I should be on the run. :upsidedow

I know, been reading and lurking, just not posting much - please if any of you are on FaceBook, friend request me, Tracy Goggin!!!

Carrie: You freaked out? nawh - you will do great!!

As for me: Did my scheduled 10 miler on Sunday and felt pretty good afterwards. Not too sore. Once I get to 10 I start to feel it but keeping up with 6's and 7's when not in training mood has helped. Stayed hydrated well in the heat and humidity, yeah! Monday morning though my calves said, "hello" we are going on strike. hahaha - but today's nice and easy 4 miles felt good and so moving along towards the Disneyland Half in about 39 days!

Take care all and keep moving forward!!

Happy Thursday Warriors!!!

It's been a while since I have visited. Ya'll are all doing great!

The heat has been a real problem here. Averages in the mid-90s with the heat index in the low 100's. I've been averaging about 5"ish" miles before the heat whacks me. Basically, I run until the fluids I carry are gone, then I quit & walk home. I think it's the safe way to run right now.

Today I managed to get in about 7.6 miles using the run 5/ walk 1 strategy. It seemed to work fine. Until the thunderstorms came & I had to slog home through the rain. Apparently I DO know how to do a rain dance!! Not a fast trip, but right now I am really concentrating on getting the LR's in before the DL 1/2. I cannot remember the last time I did more than 8 miles.

The nice thing is that the average weather in DL in September is very nice for me.

Now if I can only get the back pain under control.......................... That seems to be my limiting factor right now, not my endurance or legs. But the GOOD news is that I am starting a new steroid/muscle relaxer therapy today. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

PS - Anyone have any experience with acupuncture?? Seriously.

I haven't had acupuncture for back pain, but I did get it for migraines. And it was actually laser acupuncture. Ever since I had that treatment, my number of migraines has been reduced DRAMATICALLY! I would suggest going for a consultation and see if you like the doctor/provider.

Hi all

Carrie - Good Luck, You'll do great.

Tracy - Sounds like you're coming into the home stretch of your training for the W&D.

Jim - I hope and pray that you find the relief/therapy you need will come.

AFM Today was a cutback Long Run of 3 miles. I forgot to set a pace alarm for my run setting so I ended up going faster than I normally do I finished with an average pace of 14:38 which is significantly faster than I normally do but with the cool weather and short distance I finished well. I could probably go faster for often but right now I focusing on total distance and running time. I've got work tomorrow (1 day workshop), so my total milage for July is 43 miles. Not to bad considering June was only 20 miles because of all of the problems.

I did acupuncture for infertility (not pain) and thought it was fantastic! I highly recommend it.

Amanda

Good Morning Warrior!

I've been MIA recently because reading here when I can't run makes me feel like a slug! Monday I get to test run the leg to see if I need an MRI on the knee (PA I saw for calf pain thought it might be an tear in the Meniscus- Ive had that and it didn't feel anything like what I had), so I decided to give the calf muscles a good rest and try running again after vacation. Since we get home today I'll check it out tomorrow or monday at the latest!

Good running to all of you and keep up the great work!

Never feel like a slug! The fact you're so eager to get back on it show's you're anything but sluggish! Bad warrior!!!! :)

Jim man it sounds like hard work. I had accupuncture on my foot when that broke... i have to say it didn't have a lasting impact on me then, but I think the doctor did it wrong as it always bled. Had it once on my ITB and although I can't definitely say it was that, i had so much relief it was amazing. I guess the moral is it may depend on who performs it. Good luck!

Jeremy that is a great month! Good job on running faster too, even if it wasn't intended.

me i got out to do my long run yesterday- 11miles 1hr 35. Really pleased with that, but very aware there was still a lot of down hill so need to challenge that. Now icing, but that's just expected now.

Can't wait to hear from Sarah is pudge is on the way and Carrie on how yday was!

Hi all!!!

SOunds like everyone is working hard and getting out there no matter how little or how hard. It is the getting out there that is the important part!!!

DId my 8 miles this morning. A taper back from the 10 miles I did last Sunday. I am getting close to Disneyland as my long miles left to go are a 10, 12.5, 6, 6, and then the race!!

I did an experiment today. I weight my running tank top before heading out. It weighed in at 3.5 ounces. Then out for 8 miles, time about 1 hour 54 min, temp at about 85 with feels like of 92 and pretty much no breeze. Shirt at the end weighed 7.5 ounces!!! wow, it was hold about 4 ounces of the wet stuff!! I will start the August thread soon, just thinking about a title!

Carrie, Great job on the TRI!!!!

Hi everyone,

My DH (John) and I did our Sunday walk early this morning. We were out about 545. The sun was not up yet but the heat was sure there. We did 6 miles and for 4.8 miles I pushed it. . It was at 16.17 :cool1:for the 4.8 and 16.57 for the full 6 miles. Better time than last week. I am really trying to concentrate right now on the 4.8 so that I am ready for the W&D. Then we will have time to get ready for the marathon weekend.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Kathy

I had a crazy week last week and only managed 2 runs. The 2nd one was a disaster but I'm not discouraged. My 2 year old slept very little last week and I was exhausted. Next week will be better.
I finally started thinking about our marathon weekend trip. Now we have a place to stay (BLT) and made our ADRs (yum!). We're heading to the World for vacation in less than 3 weeks so I'm pretty excited about that, too.

Amanda
