July Patriotic Warriors!!

I'm a newbie to DIS boards, and I'm running the W&D HM in October, so I thought I'd join a group with a name that applies. :)

I'm on active duty with the Air Force, and will go over 19 years on Oct 7. I'm permanently stationed at Patrick AFB, FL and will be moving to MacDill AFB, FL in October. At the moment, I'm deployed to Djibouti, Africa. I think I'm officially on the surface of the sun! ;)

For this reason, I haven't been running much. It's simply too hot to do much of anything, and I still have to go to work 6 days a week. At lunchtime, I go to the gym and do weight training 4 days a week, so I'm at least doing something. Every other Friday, we run at 0515 as a unit, so that's about all the running I'm doing over here.

I have to do my PT test when I return, and I hope to do well on it. Running isn't a problem for me, but we now have to do a minimum number of situps (should be able to hit) and push-ups (which I'm most worried about).

Anyway, just thought I'd give an intro. Anything "Patriotic" sounds like where I should be! :hippie:

Hi Warriors! Sorry for MIA-ness. Life has majorly taken over with DH having his surgery tomorrow. We've been basically filling in our time and keeping busy to minimize the waiting thoughts.
Glad to see we have some added team mates! Been doing some walking but not like all those 13.1 weekends. I am in withdrawal. Oh well official training begins soon.

:wave2: Welcome to all the new Warriors, wow I think our team has about 24 people on it. I know not everyone posts, but wow. I did put a thought out to Maura who places people on teams that maybe it is time to start a new team. The original thought with this was that the weekly/monthy WISH team thread was getting sooo big, that newbies were feeling lost or on the outside. I think with more numbers added to teams, it starts to get that way also. Not sure what the magic number is, but it does start to get a bit hard to keep up with everyone and then you feel bad when you don't respond or remember what another teammate may be up to or needing help or support with. Just random thoughts that I needed to get off my chest.
I have to say I am one of those that doesn't get on the dis much what with work, family, and mostly Facebook(which is where I communicate more with fellow WISHers), it all gets to be much. Just throwing out my 2 cents here.
I do want everyone to feel welcome and even those Warriors who are on the team, but haven't posted in a long time, but not sure how to handle the growing numbers.

Out for and 8 miler today in training for Disneyland Half. Went to the :beach: so I could avoid bugs and get more of a breeze. Was about 85 and with much humidity. I was pretty much soaking wet to the bone when I was finished. Big toe was talking to me, ugh. Got home and jumped in the pool - minus the running shoes and socks.

Hope everyone's elses training is coming along nicely!!

Hey Tracy! :yay: Just wanted to say here that I totally agree with you on this. New members are awesome, but as the team gets bigger, it really gets tough to keep up with everyone and respond. I know real life has been taking over for me right now, and it's become quite difficult to actually respond to all the members, and since I feel bad about not responding to everyone (or even most), I've kind of stopped. :sad2: I think the idea of a new team should definitely be brought up. :thumbsup2

I'm popping in to quickly say hi to everyone! I've been on "vacation" (see: bridesmaid duties and family visiting on the other side of the country in 100 degree heat while 8 months pregnant) but I'm so glad to finally be back home. After the Rock 'n' Roll half marathon two weeks ago, I'm taking a hiatus from running but I'm still trying to get in activity wherever I can. It was so nice having the beach to go swimming at last week, but now that I'm back in Seattle I'm going to have to find some nice easy low impact activity for the next 2-3 months. Yeah, I'm sure that will be my main priority... :rotfl:

Anyway, I'm going to try to pop on here whenever I can and I'll keep you guys updated. My next big race isn't until January marathon weekend (if I don't decide to throw in the Seattle half marathon in November) so I won't have a lot of training updates, but I still want to be a Warrior! :goodvibes

Welcome Amy!
Sorry to hear that I'm not the only one melting in the heat wave! ;) We had a better weekend weather-wise and I had a good run this morning.
My project for the next week is to buy good running sneakers (and good socks). It's definitely time!

Howdy Warriors!!

Been a busy couple of days. I FINALLY FINISHED (mostly) painting our Condo we bought in Celebration!! A mere 14 months after closing. It's finally finished. Now, it's on to trying to clean the trashed carpeting, but that's another story entirely.

But the bad news is that the motions of up/down/twist/reach/bend/etc REALLy did a number on my back. Worst it's been in months. After getting home today, taking a few extra strength Advil and sitting in a recliner & not moving for a few hours, it finally got under control.

Ugh. Back pain really sucks. Really do not know what to do next.

Anyhooooo, I was able to get out and put in 6 miles this evening. AT 7:30, it was still 87 degrees. Is it this warm in California in the fall? My miles are really being limited by my back.

'Kay. Enough whining. Ya'll are all doing great! Welcome to all the new Warriors!! You've landed in a great place!

Hi all.
Welcome to the new people.

Tonight I did my first long "run" for marathon training that I should have done over the weekend. The temp. was fairly cool at about 75 but the humidity hovered around 80%. I was sweat through when I got home about 9:45. The "run" was only 3 miles but I alternated between 4 min. walking & 1 min. running. My first couple of running phases were a little fast (they always seem to be) but was able to slow down and get into a groove. By the end of the walking phase I was ready to start running again. This plan eventually works up to 3 min walking/ 2 min. running. I'm not sure if I will make it or not. I might need to adjust the ratios as time goes on.

John, I'm mightily impressed by your birthday ride, and happy (belated) birthday!

Jeremy, I'm using a Jeff Galloway plan for my October race just to finish, and assuming it works out I'm planning to do it for the WDW half as well, maybe with a time goal at that point.

Amy, welcome! I think if I were in Djibouti and working six days per week, running would take a back burner, too.

Lily, I hope your DH's surgery was an uneventful success.

JimB, I hope the back works itself out. I've had episodes of back pain and it is so frustrating.

And I'll commiserate with everyone about the heat and humidity. It seems we have had one, the other, or both all summer. My brain is so addled from the heat, I thought I lost my drivers' license, which I'd been stuffing in my iPod case during runs. Not in the iPod case, nor my wallet, not by the computer, not in the car. So a 25-minute trip to the DMV and $5 fee later, I have a new DL. (Bonus: my new pic is much better than the old one!) As soon as I walk in the door, I order an ID tag for my shoe (I'd been meaning to, since my old one no longer has current info on it). Then, I randomly decide to rifle through the bottomless pit of my purse. The old DL was floating around inside! So, I'm blaming the heat. ;)

Sarah- I looked at Galloways 1/2 plan but decided to use the Walk/Run plan in John Binghams Marathoning for Mortals. He takes Galloways approach but specifies the walk/run ratio. It also peaks at a 10 mile long distance. I'm modifing it slightly to a a couple more longer (9 mile) workouts. I used the walking plan for my first 1/2 this past May.

Looks like themy fall half maybe out the window. I saw a PA yesterday about the problem with my calf and she thinks it's the meniscus in my knee. I'm not sure I agree as I've had meniscus surgery and that injury felt nothing like this. So I'm taking the rest of July off to rest the leg muscle (the other reason for the problem would be just a strained calf). When we return home from the wedding/trip to CT I'll start running again- slowly building distance and intervals if it starts again I'll have the MRI if not, I'll revisit the idea of the Ft Wayne Half.

Keep up the good work to all of you going out and hitting the road! Be safe, Have fun and do good!

Welcome to all our new Warriors

Sorry I did not get a chance to post earlier, been very busy with the Grandchildren this week. My newest Granddaughter (2 yrs) from China has really gotten to know me and that is great. My daughter does have her hands full with all four kids (8, 6, 4, 2) The two girls (4,2) both from China also have Spina Bifida and doing great. The boys just love to swim, in Grandmas pool, like they have since they were small.

As stated in John's post, we did do a good walk last Friday. I was able to average 16.25:cool1: for just a short 2 miler. The same walk we did the begining of the month I only could only do 18.36. I was really hot and sweaty but that is Florida. John did complete his bicycle ride of 121 miles on his birthday. He loves to ride.

On Sunday we did an easy walk 6.25 miles and that was an 18 pace. But again on Tuesday we did our quick walk and was able to maintain a 16.04:banana: pace. It is coming but I guess it will still take a while. I am glad January is still a while away and I am sure that I will be ready for Oct. since I am doing the short part of the relay.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Kathy

About a 1200 yd ocean swim today. Rumbling thunder all day long, so I did not try to run until late this afternoon, then it was pre-empted by acute pain in my you-know-what.

Bummer :(

Hi All

Just a quick note to say everything is going well here. I did my 4 mile long walk/run yesterday. It went well but was drenched from the humidity at the end. More good news is I haven't had any problems with the chest in a couple of weeks. Don't know if it's the Prilosec or just time.

We had PT yesterday and it was circuit training. I thought it was a pretty good workout - I'm definitely sore in my midsection anyway. :rotfl: Probably ran the equivalent of at least a mile.

The bad part was the MILLIONS of bugs that were all over the turf field. :scared1: DISGUSTING!

Light day yesterday - walked about 1 3/4 w/my DW and our 2 silly Non-straight line walkin' Golden Retriever puppies, then a 700 yard pool workout. Wanted to go farther, but too many people getting in the way (a community pool w/no lanes marked off).

This a.m., a 6.6 mile easy run. Reasonably cool (relatively speaking), but really humid. Hopefully I will find the motivation to do a core workout & some weights later today.

This afternoon a leisurely 8 mile bike ride w/my DW.

johde - glad the heart is doing better:cool1:

Hope everyone else is doing well.

OnFriday we did our training and did well with all the heat and humidity. Average pace 16.54.
Today we left the house at 5am and did 8.05 miles. With leaving that early it helps with the heat :cloud9:and humidity even though we were drenched. Our average pace was 17.55 but we did not want to push it, instead we wanted the distance. This still was better than what I have done in the past. I am getting there. Not worried about John (John VN) I know he can do it even after another bike ride yesterday of 91 miles.

Kathy

Very quick pop in as just got back from manic hen weekend of brilliantness. I don't think i've ever had so little sleep. So no running, wish i could head out now, but the energy is just not there! Did dance for 4 hours and do some lengths in little pool so i tried :(

I will pop back and catch up properly this week as i have NO MORE ASSIGNMENTS this year :dance3: Big cuddle to you all..... putting my head back down now :rotfl:

Happy Monday morning Warriors,

Been a little while since I have posted. It has been a busy month around here. I know, everybody has been busy. :) I am still running 25 to 30 miles a week & looking forward to the Disneyland 1/2 followed up by the Wine & Dine race.

Still hot & humid here in central Il. Hope everyone is healthy & injury free as you keep putting in the miles. See ya at Dsineyland in less than two months!!!

Stan

I'm plugging along! I finally treated myself to "proper" running shoes. I went to our local road runner's club and had great help finding appropriate shoes. It's the most $$$ I've ever spent on sneakers (about $90 with my gym discount) but they are great!
I also officially booked our hotel for the 1/2 marathon. We'll be staying in a 2 bedroom with my parents (me, DH, 3 kids, and my parents). I'm SO excited. We're considering buying DVC at BLT so this will be a good opportunity to decide if we like it.
Cheers to everyone!

Amanda

Sorry I haven't been around. I tried a few times, but got timed out when I tried to reply. Ugh. :guilty:

1 days to my big race. :scared1: Half Ironman. :scared1::scared1::scared1:

I'm in taper mode. Still enough workouts that I'm not going crazy, but my 10-mile ride Sunday seemed laughble. When did that happen?

HOpe everyone is doing well! Not supposed to be taking a lunch today, so must go but I will try to catch up soon! Miss you all!
