July- Fitness Independence for Hakuna Matata!

Good Morning Team!

We, the dogs and I, got out for a 6 mile walk yesterday - at a good pace, and again today, at a much slower pace. We got out both mornings before 6am, and it was comfortable most of the time. The clouds did help cool it off, I would really feel the difference when the sun was out. I did get some sanding done in the basement, but my arm is still very sore, so it will be slow, hopefully, I will get it sanded by the weekend, so Scott can mud it again, then we will have to wait for it to dry again, then sand again, and maybe texture it by the next weekend.

Sounds like some of you are having great adventures!

The Tour has been fun to watch, I try to catch the last half hour of it, so I am not spending 4 hours a day in front of the TV set!!!

Connie - will get hours and miles added up and to you sometime today - need to get some chores done first!

I also wanted to add that I went to a real running shoe store for new shoes yesterday, I was told that I needed a support shoe for my pronation and my PF, and a cushioning shoe for my PF and neuromas, so I ended up with a pair of Asics Gel-Kayano 14 for a training shoe, and a pair of Saucony Grid Tangent 3 as a racing shoe. We will see how they do, the Asics are supposed to be alot more supporting than any shoes I have yet worn.

Have a great day everyone!

Lynn, let us know how you like your new shoes! :thumbsup2

Eva, Bunny Foo, French Lady aka Denise - Our area is hot and humid also. I am now doing my walks at 6:am for the summer.

Denise, NYC sounds like a lot of fun and many special memory moments!

We do have a lot of fun. We do something new each time we go. Empire State Building, Ground Zero, a play - Wicked, Jacque Torres chocolate shop. We love Times Square- 5th Ave, and of course SHOPPING!

This year it's the garment dist and the flower dist, not sure what else but I'll put my pedometer on to see how many miles we walk. Last year we did the Subway for the first time - that was an adventure since we don't have those in NH. We're such hicks sometimes! But we have fun and laugh at ourselves.:dance3:

Just a quick drive by!

Did 6 miles on the dreadmill as it is way to hot outside!
3 of the 6 will go to ultamm

Will check in later

Erica:)

Good morning team.

I made a deal with my wild princess that she could sleep late today if she would go to the gym with me later and walk on the treadbeast and then crosstrain on the machines while I do my stuff.

It sounds like a lot of you are really getting some quality miles in. I'm still progressing slowly but steadily. Erica is improving by leaps and bounds.

Not sure what else we will do today. It's threatening rain so we might just do late lunch and a movie. Hancok the new Will Smith movie looks interesting, anyone seen it?

Have a great morning y'all.

again no training for Mark and I. He was too tired. That whole work week thing is killing us.

I was ready for it but he was tired and I knew that today would be a long one, I have quilting bee with my friends tonight. I’ll have to force myself to get up at 4:45 tomorrow but it’ll be cooler I did say that I would not work out in the extreme heat and the air quality was poor – even in NH.

On another note, here is a quick article about our local race walker going to the Olympics. She’s just returned from the qualifying in Oregon. I must say she was mentally ready for it after 12 years and I think that has a lot to do with most anything. 75% mind over matter. Maybe more. Training is important – very important but the ability to put your mindset that you are going to accomplish something makes a huge difference.

Keep cool, enjoy your day.

Dave, Your Progress ROCKS!!!! you are kicking Butt My Friend.. You should watch a stage of the Tour when they are in the mountains,The riders dig sooo deep into their souls. I have ridden some of those Mt Passes, in europe they tell you how steep the grade is like 16%, here in the states 8-10% is steep.

I got in a nice 3 mile plus run this morn, along the Platt river, greeted by a walker with a pack (4) dogs all small and very very friendly, kept tripping over a little yellow lab, ducks and geese, deer and antelope, vert nice, with the sent of the silver berry bushes.

Garmin 405 worked well in the thickly wooded areas, and under a short bridge.

My pace was good as the course was very hilly, and even on the flats my leggs felt like someone had loaded them with concrete.

My partner is off playing golf, I keep telling him it is for whimps. LOL

Later

Good morning Scott and Denise.

Scott thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm trying to find that magic edge between improvement and injury. So far it's been ok and even my trouble some achillies is getting better. I could probably start running again soon but probably won't. When that knot on my heel is completely gone I'll consider it. But I think my future is racewalking.

Denise thanks for the link. I remember when I went to the state trials for the national senior olympics I was completely shocked and filled with joy at the same time when I made the cut and a ticket to compete.

Good morning everyone! It's another muggy day here and I didn't get a ride to work either :( I didn't get out for a walk last night because of the storm. I was hoping the rain would have cooled things off but the humidity feels the same today.

Margie - I am going to have to learn to be a morning person. If this weather keeps up this weekend. I won't be able to run much past 10AM.

Lynn - Let us know how you like the Kayano 14! I managed to pick up a pair of the 13 last month when my running store was clearing them out. I never thought about having a walking and a racing shoe.

Dave - I think you're making great progress! I wish I could go for some of the long walks that you and Erica are getting in :) Haven't seen Hancock yet but everyone has already told me the ending (why??) so I probably won't go. Let me know how you like it.

Eva - I'm a big chicken at the dentist. I only force myself to go because I've seen the problems my mom has had with her gums. Still it's not a fun time.

Scott - Sounds like you have a nice running course - lots of wildlife! Do you ever bring a camera with you?

Everyone else - :wave2:

Keep cool and drink your water today!!

Vicky, I should have brought my cell phone and could haev used that camera. I just hate to stop. LOL worried I might not get going.

Good Morning, everyone.

Haven't had time to catch up fully. Had a very relaxing week at the cottage. No exciting story to report like Connie's. My highlight was seeing a partridge and several chipmunks on my runs.

Vicky's given you the update on the hot humid weather here. Didn't run last night  and it was raining too hard to make it to the car to drive to the gym. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Was going to head out after the storm but it was even more humid.

Need to get back to work. What is the purpose of taking a few days off? When you have to work extra hard before you go and after you get back to catch up.

Connie, I will submit my mileage tonight. Thanks.
Keep up the great work...happy Wednesday training.....Sue

Good Morning Team!

Got out for a 5 mile walk this morning, a little late as I slept in until 6:30, but it was comfortable until the sun came out from behind clouds during the last mile! I think I am going backwards, the past 2 days, I have been 30 seconds slower in average pace, and I feel like I am working alot harder to even keep that up! I have not yet tried the new shoes, figured that I still had a few miles in the old ones. I am hoping that if I really like them, I can pick up a pair or two when they go on sale, or find them on line somewhere cheaper, in the past, all my shoes have come from the sale racks, so by the time I decide that I like them, there are no more on sale!

The separate training and racing shoes came just by accident, I bought one pair that was alot lighter than the ones I had been wearing, and wore them for my first race. We had purchased our own chips - the Disneyland ones - so instead of taking the chip off the shoes when I got home, I decided to keep them for races. It has worked out fairly well, but now they need to be replaced.

Connie, sorry I did not get totals to you yesterday, did not get to adding them up until after 10pm, and at that point, did not want to sign back in on the computer, will get them to you shortly.

The dogs and I have been seeing pronghorn antelope on our walks lately, of course, that makes the dogs go crazy!!! The antelope are worse than the rabbits as far as they are concerned. Yesterday, I had to turn around and go a different way because the dogs became uncontrolable at the sight of 5 antelope!

Have a great day everyone!

Went to the gym and did 4 miles on the dreadmill. I kept the pace around 15:00/mi.
Lynn, the bunnies are pretty safe in my yard as my lab will run after but not catch them. When we let her go swimming in the nearby lake, she ignores the geese and ducks. All she cares about are fetching the sticks that we throw into the water!

Erica:)

Lynn, I don't think you need to be concerned about your pace! I don't on my daily walks. You do a lot of 5k's, 10k's etc where you push it and bring up your speed. Enjoy the walks, build your distances, and you will do great. :cheer2:

Erica, how do you like your new shoes? Also what is your favorite running skirt? :)

:hippie: No kidding you would go to 'Running'?

Bunny Foo, I could not walk in the heat-it actually is difficult at 75 degrees for me I get really  I got out early and did a nice 4.76 miles this morning then rushed for a shower before the little guys arrived. I still came home drenched! :upsidedow

No Margie I won't give up racewalking. I would just run for cross training.

Please welcome our new player, Wellesleyprincess. She is in Alabama but Boston is home or something like that.

Welcome new princess.

Hi everyone!

I'm Jennifer. I'm 21 and a rising senior in college. I'm home for the summer in Alabama, where most of my races will be in the heat and humidity; however, I go to school at Wellelsey College outside of Boston, MA.

My first 5k is this friday evening, so my mileage may be kind of different as I'm torn between making sure I'm well trained enough and not wearing myself out. Yesterday I did an easy 3.5 mile run in about 35 minutes. Today is my off day. My goal for the 5k is under 30 (dream goal would be under 28 and I'll be happy with under 32). I've been running for about 3 months and average an 8:30-9:30 minute mile on my own 3-5 milers however I'm worried about what a new course and more people (I mostly run by myself) will do to my times.

Most of my friends are complete couch potatoes and don't understand my compulsive need to run. They are however happy to accompany me to a disney race. So I'm hoping this group can keep me from sliding down the slippery slope back to unfitness.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Hi Jennifer! :welcome: That's a great pace! I'm hoping I can eventually run that fast. Good luck with your race on Friday and let us know how it goes!

Scott - I'm like that too, I don't like stopping either.

Sue - What a difference a couple of hours makes! I was just outside and all the humidity was gone. I guess I have no excuses for my run tomorrow :upsidedow

Well, I'm off for my evening walk! Yay for the cooler weather!

Jennifer, Yes Welcome aboard the team. Some of the guys I work with think I am nuts saying "that's just crazy" don't ;et your friends pull ya down, the races are just goals and event I reach to so as to keep motivated.

We have a great team here with lots of great folks with great information.

Made it back home and Lynn is doing a fantastic job on the basement. I will have pleanty to do this weekend.

Watching the Tour tonight and doing a BBQ life is good.

Later kids.

Jennifer, :flower3: welcome to the Hakuna Matata team. Your pace is a dream for me since I'm a walker. I do hope to break 30 min for a 5K some time in the future. My best has been 34 min and 18 sec.

We post our miles and hours exercised and give the totals to the captain, Steffwalks AKA Connie once a week.

Good Evening, all and welcome Jennifer!

Just a quick pop in to report my mileage to Connie.

It was a hot and windy 4 miler this evening. Go outside an hour later and the temp. had dropped several degrees. Almost need long sleeves on.

Off to watch a little of the Tour. Have a great night....Sue
