On another topic, I'm trying to guess what Chris does for a living... He travels a lot, he can afford a house *with a swimming pool* in San Diego, he buys a new computer at least once a year, and he can afford to travel Concierge on the Magic... Mike thinks he's the Verizon spokesman or knows where Jimmy Hoffa's buried, I think he might be a lawyer, or a producer. Any other guesses (no fair spoiling it by having Chris or Cheri answer too soon)?Sara

I've been wondering about this out too! Not only can he afford to travel Concierge on the Magic, but twice in one year. My guess is it has something to do with money/finance. CFO maybe? No, couldn't be that. CFO's are much more serious than Chris. Mmmm, guess I'll have to think about this some more. Oh, I know :badpc:

I have to disagree with you there. I've know many Big 6 (well now Big 4) Partners and a few CFO's in my day, and they can be some of the craziest people you'd ever meet!!!! The CFO of my prior company (of course this was 7 years ago when I quit before Julianna was born) was a GREAT guy. Very approachable, and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Darren works for a large Investment Bank, though he does know the CFO, he works in a different department. Now, the COO is a real nut job.... He weighs about 350 lbs, yet refuses to use an elevator. Darren is always afraid he's going to have a heart attack trying to get to his office!!!

To be only fair, I'm officially pulling myself from the Chris-version of "What's My Line?" A few behind-the-scene PM's have proven somewhat useful to his employment. I think?

I think you're safe making a guess, Amy. From what I told you, you might be able to figure out where I work, but not what I do.

I must say, some of these other posts are fascinating....I'm biting my lip reading some of this!! :bitelip:

Chris - I'm glad that we're tickling your fancy here!!!!

On another note, I did play a DVD in my laptop and I got a woeful 1 1/2 hours before the battery died. I'm going to seach for another battery, but Toshiba wants $150 for it from them. Chris, since you seem to be the resident laptop expert, where do you think I could find a cheap battery? I'm thinking Radio Shack, but do you happen to know of a place on-line? It would kill me to pay $150 for a battery that I'll probably only use twice..... Though it would be nice to have another one......

Lori,
My expertise with laptops is limited mostly to how to get one to work for 8 hours on a flight to London without having to have 4 batteries. Procuring them, or parts for them, is something that some geeks with pocket protectors on the 2nd floor in my building do when I need something (that's right, folks, I don't personally buy a new computer every year, nor do I personally pay for all of this travelling I do!!). What I do know is that they're usually pretty specific to a make and model, so I doubt a Radio Shack would have one for your laptop. I googled "laptop batteries" and got lots of hits for online laptop accessories places. You might start there.
Chris

By the way, Sara, since you’ve tendered your guess, and without saying whether you’re right or wrong, I have to ask: what makes you think I’m a lawyer or producer? The little profile you’ve written in your post includes numerous pieces of information that come from several different posts over time, so you are obviously a detail-oriented person that misses very little: you must have specific reasons for your guess!! Do share!!!
Well, your job requires you to travel... That means that whatever you do requres you to meet face to face with people cross-country, which limits the options considerably since not too many jobs actually warrent spending that kind of money in this economic climate. You have also mentioned being familiar with traveling to New York a fair amount, that means either money or theatre to me...

Speaking of money, the ability to afford the house & pool, and the class that you're travelling in (and have mentioned traveling in frequently before) makes me think that you're well enough off to do that without strain, which also moves you into a certain strata of employment.

Most Execs don't need to travel as much as you seem to, I suppose you could be a super-salesman of some sort which would also fit the criteria I've outlined above, but the lawyer seemed the safest bet. I threw producer in because you're near enough to LA that it might be possible. I could just as easily have thrown in marine researcher, since you're down near SCRIPPS...

Mostly, I thought it would be an entertaining way to pass the time before July. Have I given you enough hints to know what I do?

Yes, Chris, I have figured out where you work. Oh my gosh, you're a distributor of fine wines, computers, and golf supplies. :teeth:

My goodness, Sara, that's quite an analysis. OK, here's mine back to you:

First, a disclaimer: I'm stating the following as facts, but they're my opinions based upon what I've read.

As I mentioned before, you are detail-oriented, and don't miss even small things. Unlike Sheila and Lori's views, which centered more on their perception of my personality, yours was based only on the facts that you've assembled or inferred over time. You organized those facts, analyzed them, and drew conclusions. No intuition or "sixth sense" was used.

To me, that is the approach of an auditor, scientist/researcher, or possibly an accountant.

You know, in a few weeks time after we've all met and gotten to know one another, we're going to look back on this discourse and laugh our butts off :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Chris

p.s. Now, if any of us start asking others about the kinds of dreams they have, or about their relationship with their mother, then I'd say our little amateur psychiatry hour has gone too far!!

Sara, this whole "What's My Line?" discourse has definitely gotten the posting volume back up. This is something like #10 for today, and we had at least that yesterday. That 90 pages is looking closer and closer. We're about 25% there now.

The only thing is, after booking two trips this year, I hope I have enough money left over to buy the drinks I'm gonna owe :rotfl: :rotfl: I better stop posting in the middle of the day and get back to work to make sure I do!!

Oh, and Mike, I'll publicly say that yours was indeed a very good idea. I'm looking forward to it!

Now the true motivation of my wife is pointed out she knows that a juicy mystery will get people talking.

Lori On the Laptop Issue look at aftermarket suppliers instead of the manufacturer you might be able to save a few bucks. On the other hand how often do you think that you will be on trips where you will need the extra battery? Just some “J random thoughts”

It never ceases to amaze me what people will do for a free drink!! :drinking1

Lori, go on the internet and look for the battery type you use. I needed one for my digital camera and Canon wanted over $60. I found a non-Canon one at Best Buy for $20 or so. So far, it works just fine.

My vote--Chris is in sales. His personality and amount of travel leads me to that conclusion.

When do we get to find out?

Thanks Karen, I've tried that, and unfortunately since this is a new model laptop from Toshiba, there aren't any knockoff batteries available yeat. So, I'm destined to wait. I did find one on e-bay for $90, but I wasn't sure about that one. Luckily, the flight to FL next month is 2 hours, so the 1 1/2 hours we get now should be fine for them on that trip. It's the flight th LAX I'm worried about. Luckily we still have a few months, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Trying to guess what Chris does is fun! I'm going with management consultant. It' so much fun to figure out what people do. I'm a retired CPA, just do our taxes now..... As I said before DH works for an Investment Bank in NYC, he's a VP in Fixed Income Operations.

This has been a lot of fun, but I also don't want to be the primary subject of discussion on this thread for more than a day, so how about we say that all guesses be posted by 8PM tonight (PST), and then I'll hold you all in suspense for 5 months and tell you at the sail-away party after I buy that round of drinks!!! :jester: Just kidding. At about 9PM, I'll post the answer.

By the way, I'd like to see guesses for Sara also. Or, at least some comments on my analysis/guess. Sara, are you willing to tell us at 9PM also?

Chris

Chris - You just don't get it do you... We want to keep this up, because at this current posting pace, we'll easily meet your 90 page quota. We all want those free drinks at the sailaway!!!!

Really?? I hadn't noticed!!!
Lori, I'm the one most guilty of puff-posting to keep up the pace we need!!! Besides, I have a little surprise for everyone at 9PM which I think will make clear that I do "get it"....... :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

This is going to be like that "Who Shot JR?" episode on Dallas!!!

Chris

OK, I'll post my occupation tonight. Any one else want to be our "What's my Line" candidate next?
