Warning For Contact Lense Users

Ok all - just have to say this. Late last night CBS ran a story on a contact lens cleaner recall. Apparently, the CDC (Atlanta??) has issued a recall due to the fact that some people have been linked to an eye disease. I apologize for not having the name handy but apprently the product in questions is:

AMO Brand Complete Moisture Plus Multi Purpose Solution. It is all type of Complete Moisture Plus The label is a blue label, white bottle (of course) with a yellow scribble design looks like an @ sign with eyelashes.

Apparently, there has been a link to this disease when used during swimming, hot tubbing or showering. Signs are still premature and they stressed that it is an early link but better be safe than sorry.

Oh here it is AMO stands for Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. They issued this warning late on Friday night and the newslink said that the company is issuing a voluntary recall but when I went today to Rite-Aid the bottles were still on the shelf. The news is stating that one should throw out any solution, lenses and lens case that came in contact with this solution. More details to follow

I followed this up by going to CBS dot com and looking up the health news and sure enough there was the link. I think that they let this go this weekend but I'm sure we may be hearing about it soon. In the meantime, check your cabinets, as I did, only to discover that I indeed had the product in question. I have since thrown everything out and went and bought all new lens cases, solution and tear drops. I went with Opti-Free.

Good Luck and hope this helps some others out there.

OK folks - here is the story as copied from CBS news online:

ATLANTA, May. 26, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(AP) Government officials are warning people to throw away a contact lens solution after an investigation linked it to a rare eye infection.

The warning concerns AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, used for cleaning and storing soft contact lenses, said a spokeswoman for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The solution seems to be a factor cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a painful eye infection that can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness.

The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating 138 confirmed cases.

The solution is made by Advanced Medical Optics Inc., a publicly traded company based in Santa Ana, Calif. The company issued a statement Friday night saying it was "immediately and voluntarily recalling" the solution.

"There is no evidence to suggest that today's voluntary recall is related to a product contamination issue and this does not impact any of AMO's other contact lens care products," the statement said.

The confirmed infections have been reported since January 2005, the company said.

CDC officials said people should discard the solution, throw out their current contact lenses and toss the lens storage case. All of them may harbor the infecting amoeba, said Michael Beach, team leader in the CDC's division of parasitic diseases.

An estimated 85 percent of U.S. cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis occur in contact lens users, but it's extremely unusual _ the estimated prevalence is one to two cases per 1 million contact lens wearers. Contact lens wearers who practice proper lens care and people who don't wear contact lenses can still develop the infection.

It's hard to diagnose and treat _ and some of the drugs used to fight the infection are available only overseas or from compounding pharmacies.

Doctors first suspected a problem in 2004, when a University of Illinois-Chicago ophthalmologist, Dr. Elmer Tu, noticed more than a dozen cases of the infection. Normally, he might see only one or two in a year, Tu said.

UIC doctors saw 35 patients with the condition from May 2003 through September 2006. About 55 percent used the Advanced Medical Optics product exclusively, Tu said.

UIC investigators think the infection is not originating in the manufacturing process, but that the cleaning solution is not protecting people from the infection, which they get in their eyes through showering or swimming, Tu said.

The amoeba that causes the infection is naturally present in soil and water. Wearing contact lenses while swimming or in the hot tub appears to increase the risk of infection.

The cases were reported to the Illinois state health department, which notified the CDC. A CDC investigation in about 35 states led to Friday's announcement.

The solution is not marketed to protect against the amoeba. But "it's supposed to be free of any type of microorganisms. It's not supposed to result in anyone getting an infection," said Julie Zawisza, an FDA spokeswoman.

The FDA will take information from the CDC investigation and try to discern what about the solution _ or how people were using it _ could be responsible for the infection cases, she added.

Health officials have interviewed 46 patients so far. Of those, 36 wore contact lenses and used some form of solution, and 21 used the Advanced Medical Optics solution within a month of onset of symptoms, Beach said. It was a strong enough association to cause health officials to issue Friday's warning, Beach said.

Dozens of cases of this rare condition can be significant, eye experts said.

"It's a large number if it's happening to you. It's a large number if there is a little pocket of it. It's not a large number if you consider there are 35 million contact lens wearers in the United States," said Dr. William Ehlers, a University of Connecticut Health Center ophthalmologist.

The company said in it statement that consumers who believe they have the recalled solution should call (888) 899-9183. It is contacting retailers, customers and distributors on return and replacement instructions, it said.

The investigation is the second into eye infections associated with contact lens solution undertaken by the CDC and FDA in the past year. In 2006, a Bausch & Lomb multipurpose contact lens solution was linked to a fungal eye infection called Fusarium.

This week, Advanced Medical Optics disclosed it was considering making a bid to buy Bausch & Lomb, its eye-care products rival.

Ok everybody - DD-14 wanted me to post of picture of her and since I did on the kids teen just wanted to post a quick one of her sans make-up. On Thursday - she had her graduation picture done and when I finished putting her make-up on - I must admit I had a :sad1: My baby is almost grown-up!

I'll post some more tomorrow - she was all excited when she found this dress - since she is still shy - we solved the problem of low-cut by putting a 'camisole' underneath.

Anyway, here she is with about 1/2 hr to go - she's now starting to get bossy and ordering me off the computer. Now I'm questioning the wisdom of raising an assertive child. :sad2:

Thanks for the heads up on the contact cleanser- my daughter wears contacts, but does not use that brand thank goodness!

Are we all supposed to get the same color glow neckaces? Please let me know. We have Ocean State Job Lot and they usually have the necklaces available. Oriental Trading is great but you have to buy lots of them and the shipping can be high.

Don't know if I'll get DH to wear one but we'll see.:)

Any color I think- as long as they glow :dance3:

Absolutely gorgeous weather around here....how's everyone's else's weather this weekend............has anyone heard if the Magic's weather has improved?:goodvibes

We live south of Boston, MA and the weather was perfect today. We don't have anything planned for the weekend but when the weather is so nice I dlon't like to be scheduled to tightly. We haven't had weather like this in so long it's nice to be able to just sit on the deck and relax.

Of course sitting on the deck of Magic would be soooooo much better but we still have to wait 63 days for that.

Thanks for the contact update - I had checked my stash yesterday - I'm safe.

I totally know what you mean about the assertive child. We want our daughters to speak for ourselves - now I think that my daughter has great qualities for being a CEO - pretty hard on the moms though!!

We're going to see Pirates tomorrow at the El Capitan theater. I'm looking forward to it. My dd will probably be dead tomorrow. She got home from the prom at 3am this morning, and then off to get in line for a concert at 6:30am. I'm supposed to pick her & her friend up at midnight.

We had an exchange student from Germany when I was in high school. Every month, my mom would do something special to celebrate her monthly anniversary with us. It was a fantastic experience for all of us. I still remember it fondly.

Let's go for lime green or yellow as our color............

I agree. The DIS color is usually lime-green, so if we could get that or something similar, then that would be preferable, however, any color would do really. :) Someone asked how long they last - usually 18 hours (from what I heard). My kids may/may not wear them, but I will.

What a beautiful pic of your dd!! They do grow up quickly.

My youngest daughter will be 11 when we cruise...her birthday is 7-24. Her name is Gretchen and I talk about her a lot on this cruise. Show her picture to your daughter and see if she would like to "cyber" meet her before July!!

Another great picture! Your dd looks like she really enjoys the cruising life. :)

I love scrapbooking!
Have you seen the thread on the Disney Cruise Line Forum. There are some photos of pages and they look great. I have scrapbooks for our first and second cruises done (except the journalling.) I'm so bad at that.

Have you done digital scrapbooking? There just seems to be so many choices, I can't make up my mind and then don't get anything done. I do better when I'm limited to just what I have on hand.

Anyway what do you think of photgraphing our pages and either bringing them with us or posting them so we can see each others and get ideas? Let me know.

Sandra

I love the idea of scrapbooking, but never really got into it myself.

are we the only ones not on vacation?:sad1:

Nope - I'm here alllll weekend.

I'm not on vacation! Although I did take my daughters to see "Legally Blonde" on Broadway this afternoon . . .

I'm looking forward to when that comes out in Los Angeles. Love the movie.

Hey Mary Jo - I think that is so great - that your kids actually look like their enjoying themselves. What a great picture!

Now where are you? :)
