This is indeed one of the threads that perhaps never can be posted with impunity: It is a little like sending ballistic missiles into a country because you feel that that country is dangerously violent.

What I find even more disturbing is the callousness and lack of compassion for fellow human beings..

Of course the offenders always have an excuse - but that's all it is - an excuse..

I find it shocking.. I was certainly not raised that way (nor did I raise my children that way - nor is my DGD being raised that way) and I wonder how it's possible to raise ones own child with compassion when one doesn't possess it themselves?

As for your actual reason for this thread, I was reading a thread a little while ago (that had been locked) and there was a comment in there that literally made my jaw drop.. Completely unnecessary and totally irrelevant.. Then came the speech - "Well you're posting on a public board.." blah, blah, blah - but again, it was nothing more than an excuse to make a nasty comment that had nothing to do with the question asked..

Some days I just have to step away from the DIS - or stop posting on a thread.. The comments make me incredibly sad..

And brace yourself - because the "speech" will be coming - if it hasn't already while I'm typing out this response..

Sure - people are sometimes more judgmental because they can hide behind a computer screen. But I also think it's crazy when you can't have an opinion that is contrary to the OP's opinion without being labeled a pot stirrer or judmental. It's a public forum. There will always be people who agree and people who disagree.

it is not about having an opinion that doesn't agree with the OPs opinion. It is about giving a simple black and white answer to a black and white question.

If someone wants to debate the merit of the question, do so, no one is stopping you---on another thread.
But if someone asks which is better for you, orange juice or soda, the answer is 'orange juice',
NOT 'you let your child drink soda? well i am not paying taxes to have welfare fix your kids teeth because you are such a rotten parent that you let your child drink soda instead of teaching them right from wrong'...yada yada yada
and then it goes on and on and gets worse.

I agree, everyone is entitled to have an opinion and I also agree everyone else is entitled to some respect.

People tend to add more infos than what the OP is asking for. A quick yes or no would be sufficient with a quick explanation (facts).

I like to believe that for everyone who chooses to show their mean side on the internet there are that many more who are sitting at their computers shaking their heads at such responses. They just don't participate.

I'm usually one of those shaking their heads, or hitting the back button. Hard as I try not to let it, it does bother me at times.
Why does the right to be rude supersede the right to be treated courteously?

LOL...and it seems to happen once without fail on each thread....where the simple question gets a wicked twist (wicked as in bad, not wicked as in good) and someone makes a callous remark... I guess that's why I've finally learned it happens to the best of us

There are a number of services, online, where one can ask a direct question, and get direct answers. They aren't discussion boards, and the distinction is important. Every posting on a discussion board is an implicit invitation to discuss any aspect of the issue raised, not just the direct answer to the direct question.

The two types of services (question answering, and discussion) are both valid and useful services. However, they are different services.

I saw a thread the other day with answers completely uncalled for. The OP went as far as to change her title and remove her post because of the comments.

I've learned that most people on here with the rude and uncalled for replies make a big enough **** out of themself, they don't need me to point it out.

As others have said when you can hide behind the screen of a computer it is so easy to be judgmental or harsh. People like that and the know it alls need to get a life and move on.

I agree. If I had to guess I would bet about 90% of the obnoxious, nasty judgemental posters on here would never confront a real person face to face.

Kind of like beer muscles. I guess call these computer muscle. As long as a person remains anonymous, they feel they can say whatever they want, no matter the price or hurt feelings involved.

Similar to "road rage" - when you have a huge vehicle to "attack" someone with.. Yank them out of the vehicle and they run - because they have lost their "weapon"..
