I wouldn't say she is not known for being likeable, I think I would say that those who don't like her are very vocal (and those who do, are not shrinking violets LOL). She does have a large 'mom's' fan base, although if you really don't like her, I can see you (general you) wouldn't believe that. I guess we'll know more when we see how the home voting goes. I'm guilty of not voting for her, because I didnt think she did that great of a job to get my vote. I don't like them to win on popularity, but on their dance skills (sorry Buzz, I couldn't force myself to vote for you either LOL).

When they interviewed her partner, he said that Kate has barely been there to interact with the other's, since he practices mostly with her at home. I can't remember just what words he used, but he said someothing like he doesn't get the stories about how she doesn't get along with the others, since she has barely interacted with them. She did seem to talk with the other's last night, but I assume she doesn't know them well.

I know Kate doesn't practice nursing right now, but I was just responding to you saying that the one person was a pilot but what was Kate IRL. Neither of them are actors, etc in real life. I guess in both cases, they figured they would both bring people in to watch, and I've read all over the net, people who said they were tuning in to see Kate, (either to fail or to succeed) so I guess it worked :thumbsup2.

No, I don't mean dancing background. Kate's a nurse? ;)

Other people on the show are generally (I'll just say it) likable or have some sort of presence or talent. You may like her, but Kate is not known for being likeable and personable, although it seems she is attempting a re-branding in that area.

Some of the guys on have been controversial like Jerry Springer and oh I can't remember his name...the MTV guy on Jack_ _ _ who are not really 'liked'. I can't think of any women who have negative connotations. I haven't watched the last 2 seasons however.

Did she interact well with the other dancers?

Kate's dress was more appropriate than the girl from ESPN. She looked like big bird floating around in the yellow.

Did I miss Shannon Doeherty? (sp?) I turned the tv on at 7:30 and missed the first 1/2 hour.

Yes, Shannon danced early on in the show, I think she was 2nd or 3rd? She did ok but looked very nervous. There were times when she looked pretty graceful but then others when she looked stiff. She did better than I thought though.

I'm always amazed at some of the costumes. They must glue them on before they dance because they look as if they'll come off with the slightest movement!

I recall Kate saying that she was going to be careful about what she wore on the show since her kids would watching at home.

One of the articles I read said they have the costume people watching carefuly during the rehearsals for any movement or falling out :rotfl:.
Some of them have a lot of the clear straps. Double sticky tape must be their friend LOL!

I'm sure they used tons of tape too! Especially with the um, enhanced chest areas flying about! I remember reading too that they are all spray tanned before costumed and that it makes it difficult to hold onto their partners! Kinda like dancing with a slippery fish.:goodvibes

Oh, so the bachelor who is a pilot in RL is somehow more of a "star" or more important because Kate was just a mom on TV, someone who used to a nurse (just a nurse, maybe? hmm...)

I've siad it before and I'll say it again on here...what makes a person worthy of "star" or being a celeb these days? Why is Kate so singled out? I agree she is nothing special, no one special, has made no huge positive impact on the world but how many people who are famous have??!

Ballplayers become famous for hitting a ball, catching a ball, running with ball (or puck or whatever)--so what?! Movie stars recite learned lines and "act". Big deal. Kathy Lee got famous for singing clips of songs on Name That Tune. Vanna White for turning letters. So what?
Now Mr. Aldrin is famous for being brave enough to go into space and walk on the moon--THAT'S a pretty big deal. But really, how many famous people really do something to make them *worthy* of us knowing who they are. Look at the Progressive Ins. girl! Those commercials have given her fame.

I just don't think it matters so much why she's become a "somebody" in the media.

Well that was interesting! Kate looked scared, and not very happy. I don't believe dancing is for her. But at least she is trying. I really enjoyed Evan, And the tall blond who does sports, they both did very well in my opinion. Buzz, you have to admire to go out and do this at 80! The man has nothing to prove to America after all he has done for his country. I wish Kate good luck, but would be nice to see her smile a sincere honest smile. It would be nice to see her happy, not a put on for the camers.

I thought I was the only one that thought her smile was fake. She always seems to clench her jaw when she tries to smile and it drives me nuts.

;) Nope your not alone! LOL.

Your tag made me look up Peeps :rotfl: and no I am not older than Peeps. I was worried there for a while.

Kate is different than the others. Her fame is b/c she had 8 kids and she marketed them. I don't know of anyone like her (octomom maybe) who isn't something on their own; who became something on their own talents, merits etc. Someone is *really* pushing Kate (all the mag articles and TV appearances) and trying to make her into something....something I don't she has it in her to to close the deal, so to speak. I get that it brings in ratings for ABC and I think Kate will be around a few weeks at least. It may get interesting.

Well, to be fair, some of the other contestants on the show aren't talented. They're reality stars and famous for being Playboy bunnies, Bachelors, the daughter of Ozzy Osborne, Bachelorette and so on.

So Kate's fame is right on par. Reality tv can make a star out of anyone.

The only thing I can figure--

Don't the Bachelor's...audition so to speak. They go through some kind of selection process and are chosen for a reason.

Kate didn't audition for anything.

As for the Progressive girl--she cracks me up! She should be on DWTS!

I have no idea why they offered Kate a TV show. There have been other's that have had a lot of kids, but they weren't chosen to do a show, so there must have been something about this family or Kate, that they got offered a show. I assume they were too were chosen for a reason. There have been a lot of people on DWTS that didn't have a clear claim to fame.

:thumbsup2:rotfl2: I like her too. Who knows, maybe someday she'll be on DWTS. She's very popular. :)

JMO but I think it's all about the $$$$! It's probably why she's being pushed so hard by powers behind the scenes. From an article in the NY Post last August:

The resilience of the cable network business model and the tabloid fascination with Jon and Kate Gosselin helped Discovery Communications do something quite rare for a media company these days -- post an increase in quarterly profit.

Discovery, which generates revenue through both advertising and the fees that cable and satellite operators pay, posted a more than three-fold surge in second-quarter profit of $183 million

3 fold surge in second quarter profit of $183 million? No wonder TLC is kissing up to Kate. She can probably do whatever she wants to do...

I don't know though, that she can produce $$$ like that without the kids being part of the program :confused3

Ok, I had taped this and just watched it last night. My thoughts........

Well, you all know I am NO FAN of Kate. I usually have no problem criticizing her, but I didn't find much to criticize her for. Yeah, the dress was awlful and I'm not even sure if she had a bra on and they were drooping...but I figure she is probably told what dress to wear..she isn't a ballroom dancer and doesn't know anything about it. I also rather have seen her in that doudy over glitzed thing then in the not-modest types that others (Pam anderson and whoever had on that white fringe thing) had on. I appreciated that she went for ladylike as a mother rather than trashy. I'm hoping she stays with ladylike and doesn't try to conform like she has so many times before.

No, she is not the most elegant dancer, but she never said she was, and we didn't expect it either. I'd like to say it took a lot of guts to do what she did, and that she is doing it to raise her kids.....but this is the gal that went on GMA for no other news-breaking reason other than to "cry" to the world that Jon had cleaned out her bank acct. and that she might have to get a job at McDonalds. So, the girl is endowed with plenty of chutpah already and I don't think this is much of a stretch for her. She loves being in the spotlight, and she doesn't have to share it this time. I still think she is rather shameless, and I still rather see her try to raise her kids by more conventional means.

What I did notice was she got the evil look when the first judge started criticizing her. She got the patented "I'm am going to make your life a living hell for not worshiping me properly" look that she she used to give Jon constantly. This is a gal that can NOT take criticism at all. This will be very fun to watch her have to be judged going forward. It seemed as though someone had to remind her to smile, because then she did try and put one on after that .

ALthough I didn't think she did much for me to criticize, I am afraid that it is not because she is changed in anyway, it's because this is a forum where she doesn't talk, and if she does, it's about dancing, which she knows she is bad at, so she appears more vunerable than usual. Unfortuanately, if you put a camera in front of her with her kids or in any relationship or on GMA or the View, where she can talk about herself more, I'm sure she is still the crazed nut she always was x 10.

They showed a woman in the audience..anyone know if that was her sister?

I didn't care for her dress at all. I thought it was dowdy. And she reminds me of when she asked Haley's dad about an uplift and he said she needed to wear a better bra...I think she needed to wear a better bra...they were going south and I think they were unleashed LOL.

As for the dancing..after Buzz, anything was good LOL (not meaning any disrespect for him, he certainly tried). I give them all credit, I could never do that. I thought Kate looked scared and while she looked like a beginner, she was tons better than I would have been. She will have to step it up, though, to stay. I felt sorry for her, she seemed so nervous.

I know nothing about dancing (I thought Pam did a good job (although she seemed a bit flakey/out of it), that shows you how little I know LOL) so I thought all except Buzz and the gal that mentioned she was heavy, did a good job.

That was Joanna Krupa (was Derek's partner before). And they also showed Helio during her bit. We know Steve is there, why didn't they just show him.

I did end up watching it today. I thought a few things were different with Kate than the others. Mainly the others looked and acted happy in the pre-show stuff. They didn't show her meeting Tony, and there didn't appear to be anyone in the audience for her.

She needs to practice more, and that is all I'm going to say.

That is so sad...really there is NOONE in her life that wanted to use the free ticket to DWS and hang out with her for a couple days in Hollywood? :sad1: She didn't have ANYONE left but her bodyguard who gets payed to be with her?

I'm sure they couldn't use the footage of her meeting Tony, because she was probably too rude. Any interaction I've ever seen her have with people she doesn't already know is strange and awkward. She doesn't have social graces.

The bodyguard thing has always baffled me. Do you think the other "stars" arrived with security? I have had a couple brushes with fame...Sarah Gilbert, Reese Witherspoon, Rick Springfield, Bruce Hornsby; none of them had bodyguards with them. If people feel so negatively passionate about you that you fear for your safety, that may be a signal something's a bit off.

Then again, historically it is the fans who have taken celebrities' lives...not the ones who dislike them or their persona. Frightening.

Kate probably doesn't appear happy because she is wantful, entitled and never satisfied. That makes anyone unfulfilled. It seems like she is waiting for other people to fulfill her. DWTS is not going to do it for her either.

Her social skills (lack of) are the strangest thing about her imo. There is no graciousness. She doesn't even use "please" and "thank you" regularly. She can't give nor take a compliment. She certainly can't take any constructive criticism. I'll stop now.

I'm sure she could have had her kids..but that wouldn't have made some very happy. Maybe she did have someone in the audience (does DWTS pay for the airfare for friends to be in the audience?) and they wanted to stay private.
You think she might have been rude when introduced to Tony? Couldn't have been that they met off camera, or they decided to show what they did instead? Tony's intereviews about her have all been very nice. I didn't notice that they didn't show them meeting..how did they start it off..their part? I erased it, so I can't look back.

Was there anyone else that was not shown meeting their partner for the first time?

I was wondering also why there seemed to be noone in the audience for her. It is sad.

I'm sure if she could've had the kids there she would've. I'll stop there also ;)
