Kylene, Thanks for the further info on IUI. I was wondering how or if they could monitor how many eggs are released and if they were able to be fertilized.

Well, I can only speak for my friend's experience, and that is that they do monitor very closely. For example, my friend is expecting to (hopefully) go for insemination sometime next week (if all goes well), and she's had doctor's visits every other day this week to monitor growth. Like I said, however, I have no idea if all doctors are as vigilant. I would hope so, but after Octomom, it's obviously not the case.

I definitely agree that the Gosselins were in a much better position than the octuplet mom when their multiples were born! Plus all their kids are miraculously healthy, they have a successful show, a huge new house, etc.
I just have been hearing calls for regulating fertility treatments, and backlash against having kids that you cannot support without government assistance. Due to circumstances, the Gosselins did get govt. assistance after the babies were born. I'm not saying they didn't need it-obviously they qualified. I just think they have to be careful in their commentary on the octuplet mom, kwim?

I agree ... I've made similar comments upthread ...

The Gosselins were on public assistance, and sued to keep the nurse. Kate said it was society's responsibility to help with the children....

Mother of sextuplets faces loss of Medicaid-funded nurse

WYOMISSING - A Berks County woman with year-old sextuplets and 4-year-old twins will appeal for continued nursing help from Medicaid beyond a one-year cutoff.

Kate Gosselin, whose husband has a 90-minute commute to a state job in Harrisburg, said she cannot safely manage eight small children.

The sextuplets - only the second set born in Pennsylvania and among fewer than 30 sets born worldwide - arrived 8 weeks premature but are thriving as they near their first birthday Tuesday.

"I will shout from the highest mountain that these are my children and I love them and I need help," Kate Gosselin said.

While the Gosselins appreciate the volunteers who streamed through their home in the early months, the children's routines improved with the arrival of Angie Krall, a licensed practical nurse who spends 30 hours a week with the family. Medicaid provides the temporary nursing support for premature babies, Gosselin said.

"She's fine-tuned and I trust her," Kate Gosselin said of the nurse, Angie Krall. "She's as good as a parent in this home."

The family cannot afford to pay Krall on their own, she said. Jonathan Gosselin, an information technology specialist who now works in the Gov.'s Office, was unemployed for much of last year.

Kate Gosselin said she feels society has a responsibility to help with the children, since modern medicine promotes the use of fertility drugs, which can lead to multiple births.

She has talked by telephone with Bobbi McCaughey, the Carlisle, Iowa, woman who delivered the world's only set of surviving septuplets in November 1997. McCaughey named the loss of privacy and the oversight of volunteers as among her biggest difficulties, Kate Gosselin said.

On the bright side, the Gosselin babies seem to have skirted the health problems that can plague premature babies and multiples. Each now weighs between 18 and 22 pounds.

"I look at six healthy babies and I feel a lot better, because it could be a lot, lot worse," Jonathan Gosselin said.

PS. I think (know) there are glaring differences between Octomom and Kate. I'm just sticking to my theory that Kate should be careful in these interviews ... and why I think that ...

I have a question about IUI. it has been alleged that Kate had hyperstimulated ovaries. what, if anything, does that have to do with the IUI and the possibility of HOM?

Kylene, Thank you for the additional info. Like I said, I really was not familiar with the distinctions between the various methods. I hope your friend gets a great result!

I just started reading their book, and in it they state that Kate was showing 4 eggs that month. They considered postponing the insemination, but they thought through the possibilities. They thought it highly unlikely that 3 would be viable, but decided that if it happened, they could handle it in their financial and living situation, though it would be tough, and that 4 was like a one in a million shot, so they decided to go through with it. They said that the injections were painful, and I imagine that they were pretty expensive too and not covered by insurance, so They probably felt like waiting another 2 months, having more injections and paying for them over a one in a million shot was not necessary...and then it turned out that there were some eggs that did not show originally, hidden like a previous poster mentioned.

Also, I'm giving Kate the benefit of the doubt here, but I don't think that she believed she was entitled to the nurse for those reasons. I think that she was just a mother willing to do or say whatever she could to provide for her children. I think she felt that her children were in need of the nurse and that they would be unsafe without her, so Kate said whatever she needed to to get it for them. While I think that lying is wrong and immoral, and that it definitely comes back to bite her in many online discussions, I can't say that I respect her any less for doing what she felt was in the best interests of her children.

She was hospitalized for hyperstimulation. So, in my mind, I think they knew they were going to get at least triplets and went for it anyway.

Another thing that always bothered me about Kate is that she says when they found out there were 7 it was a "nightmare". Can you imagine hearing that when you are a tween? Your parents thought you were a nightmare?

noooooooooo. Please tell me she did not say that............. I am speechless.

In reading the article Madge posted above about the Gosselins receiving Medicaid benefits, I just noticed that Jon was actually employed at the time. He was working in the Pennsylvania governor's office (I think he got that job due to the publicity surrounding the septuplets' birth?). The article states they "need" the nurse, but cannot afford to pay her on their own. So some might say that they could not provide for their own kids' needs (even with Jon working, not when he was laid off.) I have no idea what else Medicaid might have covered for them, if anything, or if they qualified based on income or on the babies prematurity or whatever.

I don't know whom you are agreeing with, and I normally don't comment on the drive-by posters...but you've got to be kidding me!!!

The only similarities in these families are the rare number of children, the infertility (which I'm not even sure Octomom had issues with) and the media attention.

Ridiculous.

I thought this was an open discussion?? Guess not!!

noooooooooo. Please tell me she did not say that............. I am speechless.

oh yes, she did ...

and my guess is the GWOP people hammered LKL and Dr. Phil with that info, too. obviously, it didn't do any good .. but eventually, it might get into the hands of someone who may dig a little deeper.

I vaguely remember reading comments about Kate's hyoerstimulation on the blogs last summer - there were some pretty strong statements made (and not just on GWOP) about Jon & Kate's choices, as well as the doctor they used for the procedure. I take it all with a grain of salt, considering the sources .. but I might go back and read them again, now that I understand the differences a little better.

she's made many statements over time that make me cringe for the kids. BUT. as parents, I think we all have said things about our kids we didn't really mean at the time. Of course, we don't say them on national television to be played and replayed over time ... LOL

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean you have to attack them!!!!

Yep. You don't think it was crazy scary for a young couple to hear they might have seven babies? And I highly doubt she said "Each of these possible children in a nightmare." I'm guessing it was a comment on the situation. Come on, now, let's not grasp at straws here.

Quick survey...

Who has kids and how many do you have?

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I posted mine. Just because someone has an opinion you don't agree with doesn't mean it's an attack.

Anyone else think it was an attack?

who attacked? I missed that .. I make comments on this thread allll the time that people don't agree with. There used to be one poster that made me feel attacked, but that person hasn't posted here in a while. Other than that, I've always felt like it's a pretty balanced conversation on this thread. Much more so than other sites.

I think that is she really said that then they would have made sure to quote her.

are you suggesting it was a set up in the article to make Kate look bad?

it wasn't a flattering article, but it was written at a time when (some) people in Pennsylvania were starting to get fed up with Kate's level of greediness. It started much earlier there than it did across the rest of the country.

I'm not grasping at straws. She has made many comments like that and I'm sure the children will have some weird feelings about it growing up. My DH was a "mistake" as his parents say and it still bothers him to this day and that is only said around family. He always says "why can't they just say happy accident". It bothers you when you feel your parents weren't ecstatic to find out you were on the way.

I have two kids. What does that matter? They put themselves out there to the public. They have to accept the good with the bad.

I think you are getting a little harsh with people that don't agree with you.

It just seemed like if someone, anyone, said such a thing it would make a great quote! Know what I mean?
I have never been on any form of assistance but at a time like this when the economy is so bad and people are so harsh it makes others look at things differently. When I first started hearing things about J&K I was intriuged. Now I feel for them, good or bad.
When people say things about them taking advantage of the system,. it makes me wonder. Aren't they paying a boat load in taxes on the house, their earnings, their "gifts"? That does mean they are paying back esp., because they are still in PA. Maybe, I don't know, she was depressed after having the kids and somethings just didn't come out right, maybe she really felt that she was not able to survive without the help. I think that there are more than two ways of looking at it.
