Our trip did not turn out like I expected. It was really cold and we got the stomach virus (I got it the middle of the trip then two days later our son and last day my husband) so alot of the meals I was looking forward we had to cancel. We didn't get a change for the tea (last time we had it is when we stayed the GF. While my son napped, my husband had private dinning set up High tea at our balcony, some stuff at the GVL). The worst meal was Hollywood and Vine lunch (we went b/c our son loves that place). Citricos was our best meal (we have been there before). Best new meal are LeCellier and Via Napoli. I don't write well so I'm not comfortable writting a food TR eventhough I love reading all the Food review and I think mine would be boring.

I'm so sorry to hear that you and your family had to contend with the stomach flu on your trip. :sad1: It sounds like you were able to have a few good meals before it hit you though. I'm curious about your best meal at Citricos. We weren't all that impressed with our dinner there, but I think it was mostly due to our server...and that they ran out of the dessert that I was dying to try  Anyway our food there was good, but for the most part not great. So perhaps we didn't order the right things. What did you have at Citricos? What about this meal made it your best?

We had an awesome server (I think it adds to a great meal, he was always there when we needed but not always hovering, very attentive and always had refills and sweet to our son). We had early sitting, we where next to the window and around us are family so it was nice that we weren't near couples that wanted romantic dinner (my son is well behave and not noisy when we eat but I'm glad that around us has other children). My son ordered the chicken soup (it was really good that he finished it), pasta and the make your own sundae. My husband and I both got the cheese appt (I didn't want to share so he wanted the same). For main course I got swordfish and it was awesome and my husband asked our server for a recommendation and he told him to get Veal Shank and he loved it. My husband was full so and really didn't want to get dessert so he said he'll get the gelato in case I want it... he tasted a few spoonful and said it was good and I loved it. I got Warm Chocolate Banana Tart and hot tea. My husband got wine with the cheese and the main course. We went to Citricos 2 yrs ago and we had a good meal but this time it was better and very memoriable (maybe too our son did so well and the server was wonderful and the food was awesome).

Dinner at La Hacienda

Highlights – Margarita, Mixed Grill, Very Good Service, Great View of Illuminations

Disappointments – Appetizer, Long Wait for Table with Good View

Would we Return? – Yes

Our ADR was for 7:30 p.m. at La Hacienda. We checked in at the outside podium at 7:30 and asked to be seated at a table by the window. We were told that we should make this request to the hostess inside. So with beeper in hand we found a seat outside and waited. At around 8:00 our beeper finally went off and we went inside. I then asked the hostess if we could wait for a table by the window. So again we took a seat and waited …only this time we waited in the inside lobby area. The next ½ hour passed by fairly quickly as DH struck up a conversation with the couple seated next to us. They were a very nice, retired couple from the D.C. area who were DVC owners. We greatly enjoyed our conversation with them. They had also requested a table by the window and had been waiting even longer than we had. Just before 8:30 their beeper went off and we said our goodbyes. A few minutes later our beeper went off and guess where we were seated? Our table was not right next to the window, but one table over. And who was at the table next to us (the one right next to the window) but the couple from D.C. So we continued to talk with them off and on throughout our meal (mostly comparing notes on our food) as our tables were pretty close. Not quite as close as at San Angel Inn (where we could eat off of each other’s plates) but close enough to carry on a conversation. Oh, and by the way, we were not seated in the main dining area (middle area) but in a smaller area to the right that was closest to the outdoor seating area for the Quick Service restaurant.

Ok, now for our meal. First of all, our server here was very friendly and provided us with very good service. So perhaps my theory that the best servers at San Angel Inn had been transferred to the new restaurant might be correct? Anyway, he immediately brought us a basket of chips and two kinds of salsa, one red (the spicier of the two) and one green. We liked them both, but if I had to choose one it would be the green (verde). We thought that both the chips and the salsas were better than those served at San Angel Inn/La Cava de Tequila.

Chips & Salsas

Our server took our drink orders. DH was boring and ordered a Dos Equis beer. I however had to try one of their margaritas. I chose the Lime Raspberry one, described on the menu as El Mayor premium Tequila, orange liqueur, raspberry, fresh lime juice, agave nectar syrup, served on the rocks with a hibiscus Himalayan salt rim. This was sweet and delicious … a perfect start to my meal!

Lime Raspberry Margarita

For our appetizer we shared the Botana, which was a sampling of traditional Mexican favorites. It consisted of a chicken tostada, a chilorio (marinated pork) sope and a cheese empanada. The cheese empanada and chicken tostada were pretty good, although the tostada was not as good as those served at San Angel Inn. The pork sope though was not very good, IMHO. The fried dough which served as the base of the sope was very chewy and quite difficult to cut, making it hard to share.

Botana Appetizer - chicken tostada, chilorio sope, and cheese empanada

For our entrée we shared the Mixed Grill called "La Hacienda", which consisted of grilled flank steak, chicken, and chorizo (small sausages) along with vegetables. Bowls of beans and rice were also served with this, and can be seen in the background of the picture below. Also served, but not shown in the picture, were tortillas…however I think there were only four of them. This was all very good, but way more food than the two of us could eat. We joked with our new friends at the next table that we should have ordered this for the four of us to share.

La Hacienda Mixed Grill

Not long after the Mixed Grill was served, the restaurant lights were dimmed and Illuminations started. We discovered then that although we weren’t right next to the window, our view of the show was still quite good. Here are the pictures I took while seated at our table. Keep in mind that my camera is nothing special. ;)

After the show, we ate as much of our Mixed Grill as we possibly could and were therefore way too full for dessert. So in conclusion, we really enjoyed this meal … it was a great way to end our trip! The margarita was delicious, the food was for the most part quite good, the service was friendly and attentive, and our Illuminations view was great. I would have to say that La Hacienda far outshined its sister restaurant, San Angel Inn, on this trip. For sentimental reasons, we will return to SAI despite our very disappointing lunch there. However, we will also now be adding La Hacienda to our Disney Dining list.

One more thing I would like to add here… I know that La Hacienda has been hit pretty hard recently with negative reviews here on the DIS. If I had read these prior to our trip, I probably would have cancelled our La Hacienda ADR…which for us would have been a big mistake. I am so glad that we got to try out this restaurant and I strongly recommend you do the same if it is of any interest to you. You may or may not like it, but you should try it and form your own opinion…which for you is the only one that really counts. :thumbsup2

Well, that completes my dining reviews. :sad1: However, I'm not ready to stop quite just yet, so I've decided to do a sort of review of my reviews with our favorites in several categories... including our Signature Smackdown! :lmao: So please humor me and stay tuned. ;)

I just posted the same time you did...:rotfl:
Wow the grilled platter looks yummy at La Hacienda. I love reading your food review so I'm here to the end to and read all the yummy snacks.

My DH and I are anxiously waiting for the "smackdown". After reading your trip report on the "Tour" at Magic Kingdom, we booked it for our next trip. We thought this would be a perfect time since the kids would not be with us. Since it just the 2 of us on this next trip, we are going to enjoy and savor every moment. I feel like the last 4 trips we raced around every moment to get in the most for every day. Hopefully, my DH and I can relax this time!

Once again, thank you for the info on the tour!

I think you just proved yourself wrong. ;) That was a great review of your dinner at Citricos! I considered getting the swordfish, but went with the chicken breast instead. It was good, but didn't wow me. Next time I will probably try something else. Oh, and I'm so jealous that you got to have the Chocolate Banana Tart.:sad1: I hope they still have it whenever I get to go there again...which sadly will probably not be for a few years. Anyway, thanks for sharing and I'm glad you got to have a few good meals like Citricos before the flu bug hit.

I have loved our family trips but this trip without kids was so much fun and has helped me to see Disney World in a whole new light. :thumbsup2 I hope you and your DH have a great trip and that you enjoy the KTTK tour. Maybe you will get the same tour guide and can come back here and tell me his name? It's still driving me crazy :headache: :lmao:.

Thank you both for sticking with me to the very end. At least I know there are still two people reading. :) I'm hoping to get started tomorrow on a review of my favorites and the Smackdown between the Signature Restaurants.

I'm glad to finally read a good review on La Hacienda, we're really excited to try it in May!

Can't wait for the smackdown!

I really enjoyed your reviews. DH and I really need to go on an adults only trip. It sounds lovely and how nice to visit the signature restaurants every evening.

Thank you for taking the time to write such lovely reviews. I hope you get some pineapple macadamia pancakes on your next trip.

:lmao: I love the award theme! I can't wait for the rest of the winners!

AWESOME:worship:
can't wait for my favorite part...the yummy dessertspopcorn::

Thank you to all of you for following along! I'm sorry I didn't get to Part II yesterday. I had to take my DD back to college and it took longer than I thought it would, as we had to stop at the mall first for some new semester clothes shopping . Anyway, I did make a few edits/additions to Part I and I hope to at least get Part II started this evening so please stay tuned. :)

Oh, and thank you YCFAN for identifying the mystery sushi from California Grill. Now if you only could tell me the name of our KTTK tour guide???:lmao:

This tea is described on the menu as a sweet custom blend of South African organic rooibos flavored with vanilla bean and a hint of strawberries. I love this tea and wish it was available for purchase elsewhere. The scones were tasty as usual, especially when slathered with delicious Devonshire cream and strawberry preserves. :)
I love the tea at GVL. They do buy there tea from here: http://www.tealeaves.com/t-showcategory.aspx The hard part is figuring out the real name of your tea as they tend to rename. It might be this one but I don't see Strawberries in the description: http://www.tealeaves.com/p-90-organic-vanilla-rooibos.aspx
