I have been interested in taking the Keys to the Kingdom Tour ever since I first heard about it a few years ago. However since we always had at least one family member below the minimum required age of 16, this had not been an option on our previous family trips. Since it was just DH and I this time, I jumped at the chance to take this behind the scenes tour of Magic Kingdom. I saved it for the last day of our trip, reserving the 9:30 a.m. tour.

After my breakfast at the Grand Floridian Café, I took the monorail to Magic Kingdom. It wasn’t yet 9:00 (park opening time) so I entered through a gate on the right side for those with pre-park opening breakfast reservations etc. Upon entering the park I saw there were very few people on Main Street. Since I wasn’t meeting up with DH until 9:15 to check in for our tour, I had some time to kill so I decided to take advantage of the relative emptiness of the park to take some pictures of the castle.

Ok, now moving on to...

THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM TOUR

I then met up with DH in front of City Hall and we entered a room on the left side of this building where we were to check in for our tour. We were given our name badges and guest passes to place around our necks. We were also shown menus for the Columbia Harbour House at this time and asked to choose what we would like to eat and drink for lunch. Also in the check-in area were complimentary drinks of coffee and bottles of water available for tour guests. We then sat down outside and waited for our tour to begin.

When everyone had arrived for the tour, our guide introduced himself. Unfortunately I can’t remember his name. :sad2: Anyway, he gave us each an ear piece so that we could easily hear him, even when we were in more crowded areas. Then we each introduced ourselves to the group by telling them our name, where we were from and what our dream Disney job would be. Our guided tour then began by walking along Main Street, stopping to look at some of the windows and buildings. Our guide told us a little about who the windows were named after and why. We then moved up to the central hub, stopping by the Partners statue in front of the castle. Here we were given some interesting tidbits of information about both the statue and castle.

This is the only picture I have of our guide. If anyone recognizes him and can tell me his name, I would be eternally grateful. It's driving me crazy that I can't remember his name. :headache: I asked DH if he remembered and his reply was, "Did we have a male or female guide?" :rotfl: I guess his memory is even worse than mine.

Anyway, next we headed over to Adventureland, where our guide told us things about the theming of this area and rides located there, as well as about Walt Disney’s life and the company’s history. We then got to jump to the front of the line and ride the Jungle Cruise with our guide assuming the role of the skipper.

It was then time to go backstage. We were first shown the yellow line on the ground behind which Cast Members cannot be seen by guests. After crossing this line, we met up with Woody and Jessie (Toy Story characters) on their way out for a Meet & Greet session. One member of our group was a huge Toy Story fan so Woody and Jessie graciously stopped for a quick picture with her. We were then taken to the warehouse where the parade floats are stored. We were shown a few other things in this backstage area before returning to Frontierland and on to Liberty Square. Then after an introduction of the ride by our guide (who also gave us some tips of things to look for on the ride), we took the back entrance to the Haunted Mansion and immediately boarded the Doom Buggies.

After this our group reassembled and walked across the street to the Columbia Harbour House for lunch. We were led upstairs to a roped off area of tables where we found waiting for us our name cards and special pins sitting by our pre-ordered lunches. There were two things I wanted to try at CHH, so when DH ordered one of these, the Anchors Aweigh Sandwich, I ordered the other, the Fried Shrimp Basket. I must say that both of these were excellent.

After lunch, we headed back to Main Street as it was now time for the highlight of the tour, the Utilidors! I won’t go into any details about this part of our tour… you’ll just have to take the tour to see it for yourself. :thumbsup2

We then returned to City Hall where our tour ended at around 2:00. I would definitely recommend this tour and feel it was well-worth the price that we paid. Oh, and by the way, the tour costs $70 per person I believe. I have a Disney Rewards VISA card so received a 20% discount when I booked the tour by phone. I think they also offer a 15% discount to Annual Passholders and DVC members, so if you qualify for any of these discounts, be sure to mention it when booking your tour.

NEXT UP: Garden View Lounge Tea

Wasn't that shrimp plate just delightful? We had it our last trip and I know we counted at least 15 shrimp. It was a phenomenal deal for a CS restaurant!!!

Oops, somehow ended up with double post. :confused3 Please see my next post for the Garden View Lounge review.

I have been to afternoon tea at the Garden View Lounge several times on our previous trips, but these visits had always been a mother/daughters activity. DH and DS had always found something else to do while the girls had tea at the GVL … last trip I think they went back to our hotel room for a nap. So on this trip I debated about whether I should bring DH to the GVL for the first time or let this remain a special “girls only” activity. I decided to make an ADR for after our KTTK tour and then wait and leave it up to DH. Well, after he had missed our breakfast at the GFC earlier this day I think he felt guilty so decided to suck it up and go with me for afternoon tea. He was somewhat apprehensive though, fearing he would be the only man there. Would his fear be realized…do “real men” sip tea in the afternoon? :rotfl: To find out the answer to this question, stay tuned for our review of …

Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Lounge

We took the Resort Monorail from Magic Kingdom to the Grand Floridian for our 3:30 ADR at the GVL. In case you have never been here, the GVL is on the lower floor of the Main Building. It is in a small area open to the beautiful lobby on one side and windows overlooking the lovely gardens on the other. It is only open for a few hours each afternoon (I believe 2:00 – 5:00) and the seating capacity is fairly small so reservations are highly recommended. Also, unless there has been a recent change, this is an ADR that cannot be made online … you must instead call Disney Dining. So we arrived a little bit before our ADR time of 3:30, but were seated right away.

We quickly noticed that was only one or maybe two other men there, but at least DH was not the only one. :thumbsup2 On all my previous visits I had had either the Buckingham Palace or the Grand Tea, as this meal served as my lunch. The Buckingham Palace includes tea sandwiches, scones, jam tarts, and either pastries or fresh strawberries and cream, in addition to your choice of tea. The Grand Tea includes all of this plus a glass of sparkling wine. However, since we had already had lunch and had an ADR for La Hacienda for dinner, we didn’t want that much to eat. So instead, I ordered only scones in addition to my usual tea of choice, the Princess Breakfast Tea. This tea is described on the menu as a sweet custom blend of South African organic rooibos flavored with vanilla bean and a hint of strawberries. I love this tea and wish it was available for purchase elsewhere. The scones were tasty as usual, especially when slathered with delicious Devonshire cream and strawberry preserves. :)

For his tea, DH did not order the same as me. Although he found the description appealing, he just couldn’t bring himself to order anything with “Princess” in its name. :lmao: So instead he ordered the GVL’s signature tea, called the Gardenview Blend. Unlike my tea, which was served in press pot, DH’s tea was served in a very pretty tea pot and covered with a fancy Grand Floridian tea cozy to keep it warm.

In addition to his tea, DH also had the fresh strawberries with whipped cream. These were super-sweet and delicious.

Fresh Strawberries topped with Whipped Cream

Just like my previous visits to the Garden View Lounge, this one was again quite relaxing and enjoyable. And DH greatly appreciated the quiet atmosphere. :thumbsup2 Only a short monorail ride away, it is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Magic Kingdom … another one of Disney World’s hidden gems. ;) Oh, and although the GVL is not on the Disney Dining Plan, they do honor the TIW 20% discount.

NEXT UP: La Hacienda Dinner

What a great review!! I am hanging on by every word! Can't wait to see the rest.

MY BREAKFAST AT GRAND FLORIDIAN CAFE

Highlight – Maple-Vanilla French Toast!!!

Disappointments – None

Would I Return? – Yes!

I already knew exactly what I wanted so just glanced at the menu before placing my order. I of course ordered the Maple-Vanilla French Toast with a side of bacon and a glass of orange juice.

...

When my food was brought to the table I got out my camera and took a picture of my meal. It was then that I noticed a man sitting by himself at the table next to mine. When he saw me taking a pic of my food, he shook his head with a slightly disgusted look on his face…a look I would have expected to get if I had picked up my french toast with my hands and stuffed it whole into my mouth. I must confess that if this had happened to me at our first meal, there probably would not have been any pictures to go with my dining reviews. But, as this was our last day of 7, I did not let his scolding look deter me. I merely smiled and took another picture. ;)

I just love your dining reviews...

We love breakfast at the G.F.Cafe. I HAVE to HAVE the lobster eggs benedict there. No need to look at the menu for me :lovestruc

Of course only real men are secure enough in their masculinity to do Afternoon Tea AND enjoy themselves.
My DH is a 6'4 military man - he loves making eye contact with the other real men there - rolls his eyes and talks to them with his hands. I am ok with that, as long as he pretends to love sitting in the dainty chairs

Get this: I got my TEENAGE son to do it. He loved it! We're HUGE tea drinkers, though.

You still cannot make ADRs for this online. I had a terrible time getting an ADR for our December trip. Called just about every day for months and could get none. We ended up doing something else that day--can't remember what it was--but I really missed it!

Glad you loved it!

Thanks Tinker12! I'm glad you are enjoying my reviews. Sadly for me, I have only one more restaurant to review. I'm starting to feel a little like I did at the end of our trip.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip without the kids. Until this Anniversary trip (our first trip without the kids in about 20 years), I never realized how much fun Disney World can be for adults without kids. Now, I can honestly say, that I would highly recommend it!

Thanks Googelibear! I see you are going to be at Disney World very soon. I am so jealous! Are you going to the Grand Floridian Cafe for breakfast and the Garden View Lounge for tea? Hope you have a great trip. :thumbsup2

DS (age 15) is now the only family member who has not been to tea at the GVL. Maybe on our next family trip??? He doesn't drink tea, but neither does DD2. She had either milk or hot chocolate (can't remember which :confused3) our last time at the GVL and they served it in a tea cup. :thumbsup2

I love tea time especially at GF. My husband doesn't mind going there or anytime we go for High tea it must be the British in him.

Why yes, how ever did you know?
I am so excited. This will be our 4th trip without the twins. I love Disney without kids much better. No whining!!

We LOVED the tea room!! My hubby is kinda girly though!!! :rotfl: When we found out DD was a girl, he cried and said, I can't wait to play tea party with her!! :lovestruc

So, the tea room is perfect for us!!

LOL!! When we went to the GF Tea Room I saw a woman taking pics of her food. She had a really fancy camera and lens too. I wanted so bad to ask her is she was from this board!!

My husband would not let me, he said I would have looked crazy!! :confused3:rotfl:

Awww, that is so sweet! Now if you can just get past his picture taking hang-up he would be the perfect companion for tea. Everything is so pretty there... the room, the dishes, the food. I would like to see the pictures taken by the lady with the fancy camera. I bet they were great! Then again, maybe we have seen them here on the DIS. :thumbsup2

Great review of the GF tea! I've been interested to go there - when we walked through the GF, I was surprised at how small the Gardenview Room really is! It looks like a great treat :goodvibes

Hi Pooh&OurHunny! How was your trip last month? Did you have a lot of good food? Did you get to have tea at the GVL? What were your favorite/least favorite meals? Are you going to do a dining review???? Inquiring minds want to know... popcorn::

Yes, tea at the GVL is a very quiet and relaxing way to spend a few hours away from the parks. I highly recommend it for your next trip! :thumbsup2 The Grand Floridian Cafe for breakfast, the GVL for tea/late lunch, and either Narcoossee's or Citricos for dinner. You can spend a whole day eating at the Grand Floridian!

Our trip did not turn out like I expected. It was really cold and we got the stomach virus (I got it the middle of the trip then two days later our son and last day my husband) so alot of the meals I was looking forward we had to cancel. We didn't get a change for the tea (last time we had it is when we stayed the GF. While my son napped, my husband had private dinning set up High tea at our balcony, some stuff at the GVL). The worst meal was Hollywood and Vine lunch (we went b/c our son loves that place). Citricos was our best meal (we have been there before). Best new meal are LeCellier and Via Napoli. I don't write well so I'm not comfortable writting a food TR eventhough I love reading all the Food review and I think mine would be boring.
