Our job switched payroll offices last week, but payday was to remain the same. No one's direct deposit went thru!!!!! (all different banks, so not a bank error)

My rent check was deposited last night and if it goes thru tonight, it will bounce. :sad2: What do I do???? This is only my second rent to my new apartment.

Does my work have to cut me a paper check today? Or can they tell me I have to wait for them to fix the direct deposit?

I have no money.

I don't know what to tell my landlord if it does bounce. The truth seems like a lie. :sad2:

go get a letter from your job letting your landlord know it not your fault and bring it to them,,,things should be ok,,,,i hate it when things like that happen

Get a check, and a piece of paper stating the issue from your workplace, and go to the landlord. What a mess! I hope your landlord recognizes it as a legitimate mistake! Good luck!

I would deffinately talk to the landlord about this. Tell them what happened at with the payroll at work and then go and get a letter from work and take it to the landlord. Most of the time if you are up front with the landlord then things should be ok. At least that's been my experience with landlords.

There was a glitch in the payroll at my DH's work a while back. I had automatic payments scheduled to come out and without the money they did bounce. My husbands job covered our bounced check fees because it was their fault.

Maybe the money will show up today..what does your employer say?

DH's company did something goofy with the taxes on his check once and he ended up getting a $9.98 paycheck. He called HR and they wired the money into our account in a matter of hours. We didn't have any bounced checks but we would have made them pay for them, cover any fees, AND write a letter to whom ever the checks were for explaining what happened.

They can tell you you have to wait. Basically, you're at their mercy for awhile. Wage and Hour won't even listen to you until you haven't been paid for a month (in my personal experience anyway). Now, if they're a good company, they won't take advantage of that and they'll find some way to get you paid.

I agree with the others; ask your work to provide a letter explaining the error for your landlord.

I believe the bank and/or employer will cover expenses that are due to the failure of direct deposit.

Believe me, as a person who works payroll for a small company, our direct deposit 'often' has glitches. We handle them immediately and the employees never know about it, but things do happens ESPECIALLY on the first run through. When we first went to direct deposit or if we had a new employee, we always have to do a "test" file before we actually make payment.

Same thing happened to me. They cut us paper checks that week. Go to work and see if there is a paper check and deposit it ASAP!

I had this happen to me once. I was on a cruise at the time and went to the ATM for money from my checking account (we were living close to the vest then but were desperate for a vacation). I was so mad. A lot of things bounced and it took me a while to get it fixed. My employer was useless about it. The covered nothing at all. As a result I will never, ever work for that company again (I was a very valuable asset to them and they have contacted me to do wrok for them. I was a contract employee).

Go to your HR person and tell them what happened with your money and ask them to cover bounced check fees and write a letter to your landlord. They should have no problem with this. At least you would think they should have no problem.

What a coincidence! I got on my computer this morning, because my first paycheck was supposed to be in my account too.

Nada. Nothing.

I work on commission, but I get a small salary too. I was wanting to use it to pay extra towards a bill that's due to be paid today. Now, I'm wondering if they forgot to add me to payroll. :confused3

If I were you, I would definitely tell my landlord what is going on. It's better to be honest and have them potentially rolling their eyes at you behind your back, than saying nothing and them thinking you're not trying at all.

I'm sure they'll understand and it could save you the fee that they'll charge you if the check bounces.

... and remember the lesson our parents taught us! Always have enough money saved up to cover a couple of months of living expenses just in case!

I got my paycheck in the mail today. So much for direct deposit! :confused3

Talk to the landlord--

Unfortunatley if your check is already in teh system you will be responsible for all fees and such. You can request amnesty from your bank and it is at their discretion whether or not they will honor it.

Most places of employment will not accept liability for bounced checks like that. They should for things like late payments--but as far as floating checks---legally they shoudln't be held accountable for a check written before the money was verified in the account.

Good luck and I hope it all works out.

I've been working for my company since late Sept. Every payday they say they have the direct deposit fixed. Every payday they mail me a check. :rolleyes2

Mine bounced because they were auto withdrawals. Those are set up to coincide with pay checks...when the check wasn't there on the day it was supposed to it was too late for us...by the time I knew the check wasn't there (takes a day to update the account sometimes) it was too late to transfer funds. We got lucky, my bank pays the check or withdrawal but will charge the B.C. fee...and my DH's company knew they screwed up payroll and didn't notify us ahead of time (if they would have we could have transferred funds too) so they covered our fees for 2 bounced payments. Sometimes it pays to work for a small family owned business.

Most likely your direct deposit is in prenote. That is the 10 day period your bank has to verify the banking information from the new payroll office. They actually would be foolish not to prenote as your paycheck could end up in Joe Blow's acct.
You are required to be paid on your paydate but they cold be 11:59 pm. Definitely try not to have any activity on your acct until you are SURE they money is there. I know, easier said than done.

If I were you, I would call the landlord and let them know what happened- before they have a chance to get notice from the bank. It will sound less like a lie if you tell them before they have to ask.

The way I look at it is: as long as I get paid, I'm happy! :teeth:

My company screwed up my direct deposit a couple of months ago. I had 8 sick hours during that two week pay period. Instead of reporting 72 regular and 8 sick hours, I was paid just for the 8 sick hours! And I seriously needed that paycheck for medicine and it was while my husband was unemployed. :sad2: Do you think they could move their butts a bit faster getting me my money since it was their error? Nope, took them a week to Fed Ex a check to me. :sad2:

Although I'm sure Shugardrawers isn't suprised to hear this one ;)
