I'm sorry. Where did it say the girls are not allowed to go to college?

I see that it appears they are being frugal and like learning by apprenticing, so they're not actually paying someone to teach them (as in college) but getting paid to be taught. Sounds pretty much online with their financial beliefs. But I don't see where it says the girls are not allowed to go to college.

They are multi millionaires. The boys don't go to college either, so they aren't exposed to the non- fundies. Also, the parents have said they didn't go to college, so the kids don't need to.

They are given jobs for the compound or most likely now, have an income from celebrity. (TV show, magazines, and product placements)

Of course they aren't going to come right and say they won't allow their children to go to college-they will lose viewership--but their actions speak louder than words and higher education is not valued in their family, end of story. Yes, they can do "apprenticeships" but that is not the same as going off to college. One can still go off to college and be frugal...

Well. this family happens to value children - and lots of them. If that's what they believe (and practice), is it any surprise at all that they don't push their daughters into the college and career route? Why spend all that money on something that's not going to "pay off"? They obviously feel it is important for moms to stay home with their kids. It's kind of refreshing to see people living what they believe.

I am a super frugal cheapskate. I believe in evaluating what you are putting your money into and determining the value of it and not just doing it because "everyone else is doing it". My mother actually suggested I skip university. Not because she wasn't ambitious for her daughter - but because she wanted me to join her in her (very successful) life insurance agency. Sales work like that does not require a degree and if that had been my career path, there was little point in spending $40,000 AND losing 4 years worth of income. I considered it seriously but ultimately decided I could not be passionate enough about life insurance and that I really wanted the college experience. It did completely irritate me to spend $10k on my 1st year of college going over material I had covered multiple times in high school.

Even then I knew the actual education IN MY FIELD was worth beans (I know its sacrilege to say that - but frankly, I learned way more on any job and on my own research than I ever learned in a college classroom). Plus, not knowing precisely what I wanted to do, I knew a college degree would be extremely helpful on any resume and traditional career path (because it is a societal expectation). Mind you, I am NOT saying a college education is not worthwhile (my husband is a college professor in nursing) - just saying that you should look at it as it applies to YOUR life - not because society says you should do it.

I do admire that Jim Bob appears to be an active, involved father who aligned his business interests to allow him to spend as much time as possible home with his crew of kids.

I have never seen an episode where JB and Michelle said "girls, please don't go to college. Just get married and have babies".

You'll never see that said in an episode. That wouldn't sell ... but it's what the rule in their house. They kind of homeschool college, Michelle has blogged about that. I think the girls are trained for certain roles (eg. Jill being a doula) ... but you're not going to see them at the University of Arkansas in the fall.

The show is carefully crafted (by Jim Bob) for the mainstream. It's a very small peek into their lives.

It looked like everyone was standing outside for the "reception", since there weren't any sit down types of food being served.

I do wonder how many came - was it 3000 or 1000?

200K? No way. There was a pop up right in the episode that said that if all of the daughters, or all of the Duggars had an average price wedding the tab would be 200K.

I thought the wedding was beautiful and they are clearly happy together! Is the focus on the first kiss and the honeymoon a little odd? Maybe...but I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it.

I love the Duggars, even though I don't necessarily agree with or subscribe to all of their opinions in life. They are focused on the family and God. That's their rights. As far as higher education, honestly, who cares?? There are so many jobs out there that do NOT require a college education, but do require on the job training & experience and I think people are losing sight of that. Plumbers, electricians, masons, auto body, auto technician, cosmetologist - all necessary and require training, not a bachelor's degree. My father and uncle own a successful trucking company, employ more than 25 people and neither of them have a college degree. They are doing just fine!

I'm not of the notion that food is a requirement at a wedding, but they clearly had food. They showed the pickles. I'm pretty sure the pickles weren't just put out on the table with the root beer floats.

Jill was excited about the wedding. She was also excited about the honeymoon and marriage beyond. She didn't seem excited about the reception. I felt the exact same way. They didn't focus on the reception because that wasn't the part that was important to them. All those people helping were probably back there making ham salad and cheese sticks (or some such things.)

I don't know anything about this family. At all. But I wanted to point out that apprenticing is a perfectly acceptable way of being trained for employment. Carpenters, plumbers, etc. don't need to go to college. There's no reason to be that much in debt if you are going to go into a trade like that.

Don't get me wrong, college is important. As others have said here, there are probably reasons the people in this family don't go to college besides the fact that they aren't "college material", but there are plenty of kids in the world who are talked into college my parents or educations who aren't college material, and for those kids, an apprenticeship is probably the best bet.

It's widely known that the Duggar family's faith traditions are extremely conservative/fundamental. That comes directly from Jim Bob & Michelle. What is shown on their show is carefully crafted to be marketable to the masses. For example, we haven't seen blanket training since the early TLC specials, and it isn't because there weren't any more babies to train. There are only brief mentions of the boys returning from ALERT academy ... no mention of girls participating in Journey to the Heart. Not much mention of what Jim Bob does outside of the show. The Duggar family financial resources are vast & good on 'em for that. They aren't afraid to work, that's obvious.

I am fascinated by the Duggars ... always have been. I keep waiting for word that one of those kids has left the compound. For the longest time I thought it might be Jinger, but now my money's on one of the boys.

I just recently started watching the show, and I like the Duggars. I think Jill and Derrick are charming and lovely, and in love.

On the other hand, Jessa and Ben's relationship is odd. They are really young and it definitely shows! Whenever Ben talks, hes always looking at Jessa for approval or being afraid of saying the wrong thing. She definitely is a firecracker, but they are both very immature.

allowed may be a stretch, as is what kind of education they actually get. it's a lot of CLEP testing and such. Accelerated distance learning, they call it. I don't know anything about the organization that runs the program, but I see Liberty University featured on the site ... and it's a very conservative school, so draw your own conclusions there. And don't misunderstand me, there's nothing wrong with a conservative Christian education.
