Jewelry or personal cutting system?

DH and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in the fall. He will likely try to surprise me with an expensive piece of jewelry. He tends to buy things *he* likes, though, and doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of what *I* like. So, I was thinking that maybe I could suggest a gift that I would use and like instead. (Yes, I know I am lucky to be married to someone who will occasionally buy me jewelry....he is a good guy and he tries, but I hate to see him spend big bucks on things I don't like).

So, would you go with jewelry or something like a Cricut? If you choose the cutting system, please tell me which one and why.

I've said say nothing but.... you have plenty of time to do some heavy hinting! Start soon, leave open scrap mags at suitable pages, and drop casual comments like "look at this amazing machine! If I had that I'd be able to get my scrapping done quicker and have more time for other things" or "My hands get so tired cutting out shapes, I wish I had something to cut them automatically but how can I afford it when we need the money for x ?" If you're out you could also say things like "How inappropriate to be wearing those big pieces of jewellery at this sort of place/function" or "I don't know how jewellery shops keep in business, its so old-fashioned to wear large pieces now, everyone buys costume stuff."

Remember, you are dealing with a MAN, so the hints will have to be REALLY heavy. Is there anyone you can plant to say " I saw this amazing cutting system. Your wife would LOVE that for her anniversary, it would really show you appreciate her hobbies"

If he doesn't get it by your anniversary just keep on till Christmas

If you really want a cutting system, be direct. Unless I am direct about presents with my DH, I end up with nothing or goofy stuff. Granted yours is a bit different since he does surprise you with nice gifts, but he may just get you the jewelry cuz he doesn't know what else to get. Tell him you love the things he's surprised you with in the past, but you'd love a cricut or wishblade or whatever system you want more and tell him how it would assist your scrapping.

For 11 years, my DH gave me a Disney snowglobe for my birthday present. It was a tradition that he started while we were engaged and we would look at them at the Disney store and I wished I had some. I have a lot of them now, the shelf is all full. So last year, I told DH that I know he likes picking them out, but this year I didn't want a snowglobe, I wanted scrapping stuff instead (new trimmer, prima flowers, ATG gun). He was a little disappointed, but he wanted me to be happy with my gift, so he did skip the snowglobe this year and got me a GC for the LSS and Michaels. And when he saw how happy I was, and using the items that I purchased then he was happy.

I would just be honest with your DH and say that right now, what you want most is a cutting system. Acknowledge that you know he likes to go jewelry shopping, and that you are appreciative of his efforts but that you just can't stop thinking about how great it would be to have the cutting system.

Maybe he'll get you both!

I think you should definitely suggest it. I would say something like "I was thinking of getting something like this but it's not an everyday kind of purchase - maybe as a gift?" I wouldn't even go for hints - I think in general DHs are very dense. I know with mine you have to hit him over the head with things.

I actually voted Jewelry, because I would love my DH to surprise like that. So I asked my DH what he thought about your thread (as a way to hint that I would like him to buy me some bling! lol) And his response was this

" If she wants the die cuting machine then she should tell her DH that is what she would really like. Most men are clueless about what to get their DWs and so they get whatever the girl at the jewlery counter seems to like. Men figure that 9 times out of 10 the wife will not like whatever it is that they ( DH ) pick out, so if it is shiney and expensive thats got to count for something." He also sugested that you write down exactly what you want and print out pictures. LOL

So I guess that you should tell your DH what you want, and that I need to take my DH to the store and point out what he needs to buy me.

I also think you need to take the direct route with your DH. Most men are dense when it comes to gift giving. You may even find that he is a bit relieved not to have to stress over picking out yet another piece of jewlery. As a matter of fact, I usually purchase my own gifts for DH. If I don't, he is sent to the stores with a list, sometimes a picture, and usually a coupon (I hate paying full price!). He doesn't have a whole lot of time to shop and most of the better stores in our area are anywhere from 40 mins to an hour away, so this works for us. He's happy he doesn't have to stress over what to get and I'm happy because I get what I want.

As for which system to get, if your budget will allow for it, get a wishblade. Yes, it seems like alot of money upfront, BUT you will not have to buy different cartridges for different fonts like you would with the cricut. The wishblade will let you cut just about any TTF in sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 8 inches. It will also allow you to connect those letters instead of cutting them individually if you want. Those two things right there are worth the cost imo. Plus you can trace clip art and cut it out to make paper piecings. You can also draw your own things and cut them out. It is truely an amazing machine!

30 years married here. Be direct. Fran had it right - appreciative of past efforts, but direct about current wants. I'd go for the Wishblade.

I am not a big fan of jewelry so I picked cutting machine. I would pick the cricut because I like the fact that you don't have to hook it up to a computer to use! I actually have quite a few cartridges but no system yet. I was going to buy one this weekend but all of the wal marts by me all 20 of them can you believe that were sold out! I was going to buy it there because they have the best price but it seems like as soon as they hit the shelves around here they are gone so I might bite the bullet and buy it on qvc it's a little more expensive but you get the exclusive qvc cartridge as well which would be good to have!

Provide some big hints with your husband or just tell him directory what you want that way he can get you something you love!
