Jet Tubs and Bath Bombs

While giving my DD4 a bath in the big tub at BLT the other week, we had to evacuate because of brown scum floating on top of the water. "Daddy, what is that stuff?" Jeebers, good thing the 1 bdrm has 2 tubs. This is what was left around the entire tub when we drained the water out - please, don't use a bomb in the tub:

That's what they do to normal tubs as well. Since I'm the tub cleaner, and was the one-time bath bomb user, it's just NOT relaxing, and I don't use them anymore!

While visiting white basin at DTD, I often wondered about that. I have never stayed there with a whirpool tub before but I will file this away just in case lol
very gross. Did you report it to Disney? and if so what if anything did they do? I was under the impression that hotels flushed the jets on those tubs between guests??!!??
If not I may not be using the whirlpool at our timeshare ever again.

I remember seeing a thread about this. Someone called hotel jacuzzi tubs something along the line of "toilet tub" The body oils and the dirt that clings to the oil gets caught up in the jets. You're basically bathing in other people's sweat and gunk.

If I remember correctly, somebody recommended cleaning that type of tub before using it by filling it with very hot water, squirting in some dish detergent (works best to cut the grease) and turning the jets on for a while. Empty the tub and repeat with clean warm water to get the dish soap out of the jets.

Sounds like too much hassle for me. I'll just use the shower.

If this was ME and MY bomb, I would be ok with that, I'd just clean it up. This is a situation where the tub appeared clean before we used it, filled it up with water, and turned on the jets. All was sparkling clean before the jets went on. This was someone elses bomb junk in our tub water. I called housekeeping and they cleaned it up, but not very well, there was still bomb scum in some places. We just said forget it and used the little tub. DW will never use one of these things. Bleech.

Yup, fill the tub, dump in some cascade, and run the jets for 15 minutes. It's part of my check in cleaning, along with washing the blankets and putting away the scummy bedspreads.

Those tubs are just like the pedicure tubs that got a bad rap for giving people horrible infections.

Try not to think about it too much. If you give too much thought to the cleanliness of hotel rooms you won't ever want to go back.

That looks exactly like what we found after using out hot tub at AKV in October. We were done with the tub at that point. Housekeeping stated it was from the liquid soap, not sure about that one. Anyway, won't be using the hot tubs again.

We go to the laundry room, spend a dollar on the powdered clorox from the vending machine, fill the tub enough to cover the jets, use half the pack, run the jets, rinse repeat with the other half, rinse. It takes a little time, but its worth it.

I heard that people use dishwasher detergent, because it has bleach in it. It didn't occur to me to get stuff from the laundry room. Good tip!

Definately use dishwasher soap, for no other reason than the fact that it does not foam up. We have a large 6' jacuzzi tub at home and if we don't use it daily a black film will build up and shoot out when we turn on the jets... So whenever my kids want to use the tub I fill up the tub and run the jets for 15 minutes with diswasher soap (powder works best) then rinse then do it all over again twice. So we run 3 cycles with soap, then 1 cycle with no soap to just rinse it out... So 200 gallons of water and 1 hour later the tub is ready to use That's why after living in this house for 6 years we have only used the bathtub 3 times! So don't forget the powdered dishwasher detergent for your ouners locker!

I'm glad to know this, I practically LIVE in that tub when we are in a villa. I'm having my first Studio experience next month at the GCV so we'll see how I hold up. I will be sure to bring some dishwasher soap next time I am in a 1 bedroom. I always use bath salts in the tub, but what is a "bath bomb"

This info came directly from the hot tub service guy we use at home....he also services whirlpool tubs. "Don't ever use a hotel/resort whirlpool without cleaning the jets first. When water drains from a jetted tub, some water always stays in the tubing. So, in essence, even if the tub is cleaned thoroughly by housekeeping and the jets are not run through with a sanitizer...you are taking a bath with whomever stayed in that room before you. The best way to clean/sanitize the jets is to fill the tub up, add a cup or so of bleach and turn those jets on.....leave it run for at least 20 minutes....then drain and run a rinse thru the jets." We never use the jetted tub unless we follow this procedure first.

No need to bring or buy dishwasher soap. 1 bedrooms have dishwasher soap provided and mousekeeping will bring more at no charge if you run out. Personally I think the idea of getting bleach from the laundry vending machine is a great idea.

I was also wondering what a bath bomb was, but I am guessing it's some type of bath smelly stuff! I will definitely have to clean the jets out when I get there as we love that tub!! But, eww- I am now grossed out!

I am a freak when it comes to using tubs in rental properties but I could not resist the urge to use the jet tub at OKW. We purchased a box of jacuzzi cleaner from Lowes Home Improvement. Then when we arrived I ran the tub and used the cleaner while we unpacked. The box cost about $4 and had 2 treatments in it so I am ready for our next trip by just leaving it in our OL. I would have had a fit if that had happened to my family when they tried to take a bath.

I keep a few dishwasher tablets in my travel bag with my other tioletries. Never know when you are going to check into a hotel with a whirlpool. It takes a few minutes for the tablet to break down but it is very convenient to carry with you.

I remember a post going around a year or so ago about this situation. Ever since where ever we go I use bleach in the tubs and wash blankets, pillow covers etc before I use them. Oh yeah I also wash all dishes in the dishwasher. Yeah it probably takes about an hour but it is part of our routine now.

I posted last year the best way to clean jacuuzi or jetted tubs so here it is again.
1. Fill the tub with hot water only about 1" above the jets.
2. Add 1/2 cup bleach and 1/2 cup powdered dishwasher detergent. Do not use the packs with the jet dry added.
3. Circulate the water for 15 - 20 minutes, starting and stoping a few times. This helps dislodge "gunk" from the internal piping.
4. Drain the tub and refill with water only.
5. Circulate another 5 - 10 minutes. No need to start and stop at this point.
6. Drain and your ready to use.
