I found a full length video of the Jesus Christ Superstar, the 2012 Broadway production, on Youtube. It is made from various clips of the different songs pieced together. It's from an overhead balcony view. So not all that great. But interesting none the less. popcorn::

It starts out with a black screen as the overture starts, and the cellphone camera quality is really shaky for the first few minutes. Just know that when you start watching. :headache:

Happy Easter!

Is it good? We watch the 1973 movie with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson every year on Good Friday. It's my favorite musical.

Same here. Ted Neely held up well, over the years. Hated that Carl Anderson passed away...too soon.

BTW.. I was disappointed, when they changed the play.

When I was a kid we had the original 1971 album with Ian Gillan as Jesus (lead singer for Deep Purple) that played all the time at my house. So when the movie came out a couple of years later, we went to see it about 10 times! Now we have the DVD and watch it about once a year. I saw the live performance with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson twice back in the 90's when the show was revitalized.

Now Neeley is touring JCSS in Italy. Opening night was last week. There's a link on his facebook page to one of the songs, but I can't get it to open. Anyway, HUGE fan here. I watched part of the link you provided, but it's not the same as watching Neeley in his younger years. I'm pretty sure though if the show came through my area, I'd probably go.

ha. We could be twins. We played the concept album out as children in my house, then started watching the Ted Neeley film as soon as it began airing on tv. I also saw Neeley and Anderson on the stage in the 90s.

I agree. I think if a production came to my area, I'd go see it no matter who was starring, but for nonlive performances, it's hard to hear anyone but the film or concept album stars.

The show closed on Broadway at the beginning of last summer, I think. It got good reviews and I think the actor who played Judas was nominated for a Tony. So it's worth taking a look at the second link I posted of his performance of the Tony Awards. You've already seen various productions and know the story of Jesus, so that song is no surprise. ;)

I got to see Ted Neely in it when he was on tour, back in the 70's. Years later, my ex-BF has a best friend who played Jesus in local production. So we went to see that. I loved that production, too. :thumbsup2

DH also "grew up" listening to Ian Gillan, who, in his mind, is STILL the best Jesus. He always thought Ted Neeley was a bit wimpy and whiney, compared to Ian, but we also saw Ted and Carl Anderson on tour, and most recently with Cory Glover as Judas. Ted is better with time, I think (although our kids, when they saw it, said "Jesus is OLD! He's not supposed to be old!").

If you have the DVD version of the 1973 movie, the commentary is worth listening to. The director, Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley are talking, and it was recorded just a few months after Carl Anderson died of lymphoma. You can tell how close Ted and Carl were; at one point, toward the end, Ted's voice cracks and he says, "I miss you, Carl."

That is heartbreaking!

I must admit, Ted Neeley did not age very well, but dang, he was all that in 1973! Getsemane is my favorite song from the musical. During this show in '06 Ted could still hit the high notes. Listen at 3:04. It still gives me chills! Look how excited the other cast members were when Ted hits those high notes because apparently he was having some problems with his voice at this time.

Wow, that's something!
Our 7th (?) grade class trip (1972? 73?) was to see JCSS on Broadway.
I play piano, and I have the book of music which I had played when I was younger and had a piano in the house.

The JCSS arena tour has been completely canceled! It was scheduled to begin the US leg of the tour on June 9th. Such sad news!

This is no big surprise to me. The arena tour is not at all of the same caliber or cast as the Broadway show. The singer they got to play Judas is some rock singer, who does not have a very strong voice. This production was basically cast with a few famous rock singers which they thought would sell tickets.

This video clip is from the Broadway Show version from the Tony Awards, with Josh Young, who was nominated for a Tony for this role. :thumbsup2

Here is the Arena Tour with Brandon Boyd from Incubus, and Michelle Williams (as Mary Magdalene) from Destiny's Child.

Here was the cast from the Arena Tour. Jesus, who is supposed to be the main star, is listed FIFTH, (from left to right as we read.)

Here is Ben Forster's performance as Jesus. While watching, I kind of wondered the same as the first person in the comments on the page, Amalie. Not that there's anything wrong with it ;) but that's not my personal image of Jesus.

Love Josh Young! Dh took dd to see it on broadway a couple of years ago. I saw Ted Neely perform in the early 90's. His voice wasn't there like in the movie bout he was still good.

My 2 ds's are doing a summer stock of JCSS next month. Can't wait!

That was my first Broadway (touring) show. My parents had the Ian Gillian album and after listening to that all the time I never really liked the Ted Neely stuff. I think Greg Evigan was Judas in the one I saw touring--but I was only 7 so maybe my sister made that up.
I get really attached to certain versions of shows. The Ian Gillian will always be my favorite. I listened to the British Les Miserables soundtrack so much I never liked the one from the NYC cast.

I also grew up with JCSS playing on the HiFi on a daily basis! I saw it on Broadway, and it was phenomenal. A few years ago I saw the tour version, and it was just okay. I am not at all surprised it canceled.

This was our first touring Broadway show in early 2000's
Sebastian Black from Skid Row was Jesus
but Judas was the STAR!!! we had the original Judas-from Broadway and Movie-Carl Anderson (right before he died of leukemia) he was amazing-:)

Last night I saw the Broadway musical "Once" starring Paul Alexander Nolan who played Jesus in the OP's link. He was amazing!!!
