Jesus changed my life!!!!!

Well, I am not offended. I wouldn't have started a similar thread but, whatever.

Jesus changed my life by fulfilling what God promised, IMO. Jesus changed my life by giving me a way to come to God. I would not go into the presence of God when I die had Jesus not sacrificed Himself for me (and everyone according to scripture). I would not be able to rely on the power of God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit each day if it had not been for Christ.

The Jesus skywriter thread is entirely too long for me to read, but since that thread is about Jesus, what is the problem in discussing him on that thread?

I was wondering the same thing.

Sounds more like segregation to me - Christians post here so I don't have deal with you. Sorry but I think the DIS board is like life, you find a little bit of everything in every thread. I don't mind reading the experiences, their beliefs any more than I mind reading about other peoples experiences and beliefs about anything. When I come across a post from a poster I don't really agree with I skip it, if the thread goes south I close it. If it really is bothering you so much that you feel you must create a post to keep them from imposing on your world then maybe something else is going on.
Not at all..I mean how, many threads do I talk about Judaism in , a ton? How many threads end up being about Christianity? A ton..
But whenever the thread turns to witnessing people get mad.. I created a thread where people can witness..My mistake was in assuming that peopls *got* my sense of humor, and that my long term posting on religion would ensure that people knew I was being tongue in cheek.
It would be a bit hypocritical for me to try and suggest that Christianty could only be discussed here, when I inject Judaism into threads all the time.

The Jesus SKYWRITER thread was about the guy in the plane.

It was hijacked by several self-admitted fanatics (their words) who continued to witness and "pray" for posters.

The thread was not about Jesus. It was about the Skywriter.

Ah well,,Can't please everyone..I would be just as likely to *mock* my own religion or my own disease etc... That's the way I am..
I would assume that most posters know my sense of humor by now.

So first, I haven't read all the posts on this thread or ANY of the posts on the other one but this caught my eye. I'm a Christian that sees no harm in poking a little fun at my own religion and I do so regularly. As far as the original "question", i wonder if I am unusual for a Christian in that I have never had a "life changing" experience happen to me. I grew up in a mixed house - Christian/Jewish - that was always religious. My father converted to Christianity (as did his brothers) and it all just came in stride. We never completely gave up some Jewish "practices" in the family but we are all practicing protestant Christians and most, if not all of us, have never had that spiritual "V8 Moment".

From what I saw it also got hijacked by alot of people that had nothing to do with Jesus or the skywriter.

In my experience it really seems to depend on the branch..As someone who was raised Catholic,I think most Catholics are just raised to be Christians..There is often no lightbulb moment, just a general growth in the faith. Obviously I'm not saying all Catholics are like this. Now people who weren't raised Christian often talk about that AHA moment, or even lots of people that I know from more fundimental religions. They can usually tell you exactly when they were saved. There wasn't really an aha moment with me in regards to Judaism either, just a genuine growth towards it.

That's really interesting...I also grew up in a Christian and Jewish household, so I'm always interested in hearing everyone else's experience. :goodvibes

Did you practice both religions? Or were you raised mainly Christian or mainly Jewish? I went to First Communion and Confirmation and was never a Bat Mitzvah, although we did go to temple and celebrate the High Holies.

My husband is Catholic, and while he never had a "light bulb" moment, so to speak, he told me a stoy on our first date that i found very, very touching. I think it's actually when I started falling for him!

When he was making his First Communion at 7 years-old, they allowed all of the kids to eat an unconsecrated host, just so they knew what they would be "dealing with" on the big day. He says that when he first received a consecrated host, it tasted completely different. he says that was all the proof he ever needed; he calls it his "small miracle".

When I was little , I used to hold the host on my tongue for as long as possible to see if I could made it last until I left the church..Come to find out that's a big no no. You are supposed to consume the host in the church.

I was told that the Actual Presence stayed inside you for 15-minutes after taking communion....I don't remember if there was a reason for that.

I remember I always let it dissolve in my mouth; I just felt uncomfortable chewing...you know...Him!

When I was young we practiced both after a fashion. I was Bar Mitzvah and Confirmed in my Presbyterian church the same year. By the time my brother and sister got older they were not Bar/Bat Mitzvah. My father was a musician and was choir director at our church for several years before he converted. His older brother converted pretty soon after he married and his younger brother lives in Germany (an American "repatriate" if you will) and also converted when he was married. We grew up in Indiana. There is, in fact, a Jewish community here, but in the city I grew up in it was small enough that marrying "outside the faith" wasn't so frowned up as you often had little choice. As it was my Dad and his brothers have lead pretty happy lives and their parents (my grandparents) were not scandalized by their conversions.

OK, I'm back. I feel like a YAGER.
But, a couple people said some interesting things and instead of starting a new thread perhaps we can address it here.

Believe it or not I too was brought up in a Catholic/Jewish household. My Dad catholic, my Mom Jewish. We were brought up Catholic however (much to my maternal grandmothers dismay). I went through it all, CCD, 1st Communion, Confirmation, even Catholic school. Later in life I switched over, converted, whatever the approriate term may be to Baptist. However I never had that life changing moment either that most Baptist have. You know, the crying, repenting, holler out to everyone "I'm saved". I am more reserved in my beliefs and keep them to myself (usually :rolleyes1 ).

So, to those of you that were brought up that way do you feel the same way. Is it like Jenny said it's just growth so it doesn't impact us as much. I've been dealing with this question for a while now because it makes me question my faith. Not my faith in God or Jesus, but my faith in how I practice.

Ok,one other things because this being raised in a multi-faith household interests me..DO you feel it confused you? Made things harder for you...I'm the Jewish person in the house... One of my kids feels like Judaism is the thing for him.. One has no feeling about religion/agnostic and 1 would call themselves a Christian...We used to to go to the Mission San Louis Rey in Ca and they have all also been to temple...My feeling is that as long as they become good productive human beings,I don't care what relgion they choose ,but I do wonder if I'm confusing them ..What I'm aiming for is making them more tolerant.

Did you get a toaster? I don't think it's official without a parting gift.

No, I don't think it confused me becasue my Mom would go to mass too. My Grandmother lived on the west coast and us on the east so visits were limited. Of course when she did visit she would try to get us to learn about Judaism, but truthfully I remember nothing about it.

Do you need my address? I like the 4 slot kind, wide enough for bagels please.

I'm sorry, but you will have to come back to Judaism for that..A 4 slice bagel toaster is the first thing you get when you convert along with the secret password that gives you the access you need to control the worldwide media.

Since this thread seems to be "safe" at the moment ;) , I'll go ahead and say what got me "burned" nearly a year ago: I love Jesus: as a "role model", a "great person", whatever (i'm not trying to sound flippant, just trying to keep things simple). I love Jesus' teachings. I find his ideas about forgiveness, charity, and selflessness profound and life-changing. However, I'm not entirely sure what I believe about him as a "savior". That's the truth of the matter: I just don't know. I don't believe he was the Old-testament Messiah because, academically, he just doesn't fit the bill...but as I mentioned in a nother thread, this has no bearing for me on whether he was the Son of the Most High.

There was a point of time in my life where I was certain he was the truest incarnation of God, but I was driven further and further away from that belief when I realized that I was not really welcome in any Christian communuity. granted, it was nrealy a moot point at that time because I find most branches of Christianity to be primarily vocal about things that, in my study, I don't think Jesus really cared much about. I was also always confused about how we were to know which parts of the Law he "fulfilled" and which we still had to hold to. And, no, St. Paul was not a good enough answer for me.

The more I studied about and participated in other religions, the more I found that just about all of them has a center of spiritual peace and truth....a way to be truly fulfilled. I had a couple amazing conversations with my Hindu friends about Jesus and all of the overlap between our beliefs. I spent a night on a mountain with a Shaman in New Mexico. They all gave me the same feeling as receiving communion or reciting the Kaddish.

Wow...that was so long winded....sorry!
