Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt

When Clinton was President and he got a new dog as a pet, Rush Limbaugh made the comment on his radio program that "there are now two dogs living in the White House- Buddy and Chelsea. . " He was justifiably vilified for the comment, and eventually made a halfhearted apology adding that liberals obviously had no sense of humor. .

And as I recall Saturday Night Live did some skit making fun of Chelsea's looks that really offended the Clintons and Hillary made a very public beef about it. . .

I think it's wrong to make fun of any Presidents children no matter what age they are, but both sides of the political spectrum have done it and both should be ashamed of themselves.

And for the record, I've been a regular listener of Rush Limbaugh for over 10 years and I can assure everyone that he never once stopped criticizing Clinton's character, motives, and intelligence while our military was fighting in Kosovo, Bosnia, and Haiti. . . all the while making it very clear that while he disagreed with the President, he supported the troops. .

And I would never say he was obligated to stop voicing his opinion in order to be a good American, and I damn sure would never accuse his lack of support for Clinton and his policies as having contributed to the deaths of any of our soldiers.

But I'm extremely confident in calling him a mean-spirited hypocrite for accusing people who are against Bush and this policy of those very things. . .

I don't listen to him--did he actually say that people who are against Bush and his policy have contributed to the deaths of our soldiers?

Or was he talking about protesters--the ones that Saddam Hussein openly said worked in his favor and encouraged him to cling to hope that we would not use military action? The ones who made him believe that if he used guerilla tactics and made things as ugly as possible we would withdraw?

People are free to protest and others are free to say that the protesting may have backfired.

Now that's funny. :D

Jenna Bush was 19 years old when the drinking scandal hit in 2001. The original article quoting Anniston was from 2001, as well.

If you're old enough to be held as a POW in Iraq at 19, then you're sure as heck old enough to take a jab about trying to buy alcohol with a fake ID.
Pitt wasn't making a crack about her father, the president, he was making a remark about her underage drinking.

1) They were underage.

Sorry I used the word "underage" rather than saying Chelsea was a minor while Jenna and Barbara are not, which is what I meant.

I agree that presidential children should not be made fun of no matter what their age. However, I imagine to some there is a difference in ridiculing an adolescent girl and two girls who are adults, albeit under 21, who are caught drinking with fake IDs. Especially when they are that high-profile. It seems that lately Chelsea has been in the tabloids, so I guess she's considered fair game now.

So it would be OK to go up to Chelsea Clinton (when she was 19 and Clinton was still in the Whitehouse) and make a horseface joke under that assumption that she's old enough to take it?

Galahad, A horseface joke would be a joke about her personal appearance, so no. There's not much she can or should do about that. I wouldn't think that would be funny.

The crack at Jenna Bush was about being stupid enough to try to purchase alcohol with a fake ID, when (Duh!) everybody knows who you are and how old you are.

Completely different.

It is WRONG to take a jab at the Presidents children whether they are 12 or 20. It is WRONG to take a jab at these same children whether the President is a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Animated Character. It doesn't matter if the person taking the jab is the Pope or an actor. It is just as WRONG. Why is everyone trying to justify this? It sounds like my children arguing and using the justification that the other one started it first. I see this silliness over and over again on these boards. Republicans whine that noone minds when a Democrat does the same thing. Democrates whine that noone minds when a Republican does the same thing. Absolute wrongs and absolute rights don't change based on your political affiliation.

Now stepping off my soapbox...

Lanshark, Exactly why is it wrong? Is it wrong, because no one should ever make a wise crack about anyone? Is it wrong, because they are the President's children? Is it wrong, because of their age?
Why do you feel it is wrong?

Ummm, these comments were made in August, 2001.

Lots of water has passed under many bridges since then.

I can't quite figure out what an ancient Anniston/Pitt comment has to do with Iraq, or the point in bringing it up now.

Or is there some effort afoot to search out anyone who ever said anything negative at any time about President Bush? If so, that's a bigger thing to get fussed about than some inoccuous comment made by some celebrity in Rolling Stone almost two years ago.

Well said. :) I'm also curious as to the relevance of this nearly 2-year old article on the "Operation Iraqi Freedom" board??

Would it be just as funny if Jane Doe had been known to make the same stupid move of trying to buy alcohol and then be subjected to personal and direct ridicule (by a celebrity or not)? IS your point that rubbing a 19 year old's face in their mistakes is what is funny about this?

Yes, Jane Doe getting snagged for trying to use a fake ID would be funny, as well. I see that sort of thing quite often where I live.
Some guy held up the check-out line I was in at Publix for quite some time trying to buy beer with a fake ID. According to the cashier, it looked nothing like him. (I didn't get a close-up view of the ID, myself.) To top it all off, the ID was expired. It was rather amusing to watch him stomp out of the store without the beer.

But Jenna Bush getting caught trying to use a fake ID is somewhat different from Jane Doe doing the same. Jane Doe's stupidity wouldn't embarrass the President of the United States.

Is rubbing someone's face in their "mistake" funny? You tell me. After all, you implied that I was unable to register on your little class-o-meter. Is it OK to take a jab at me, because I'm over 19 or because I'm not the daughter of a president?

I'd rather be seen as classless than hypocritical any day of the week.

But you invited the "jab" by posting your opinion on a message board. The personal jab at the Bush girl was univited. There, in fact is no inconsistancy or "hypocracy". Your opinion and my opinion are different. We both post them on a message board.

If every kid that does this invites personal, to their face ridicule, then I will agree with you that you don't rate on my little class-o-meter.

Finally, I come to this "Operation IRaqi Freedom" board from the Debate board rather than the Community board. Disagreement over little things and discussion for its own sake are the rule of the day on the DB, so if the protocol is different here, I appoligize.

Jenna Bush decided to use a fake ID to knowingly commit a crime. Her actions are open to criticism. The actions, themselves, invite criticism. As for the "to their face" portion of your post, I'd much rather someone make a comment to my face than behind my back.
A 19 year old is not a kid. At 19 I was living alone and fully supporting myself. As I previously stated, if 19 is old enough to go to war, then 19 is old enough to accept ridicule for obvious stupidity.

I am quite content being excluded from your "classy" list, I assure you.
:)

Okey Dokey...we agree to disagree....

BTW, you granted me a "classy" list. I didn't invent it. I am however pleased to have caused you contentment.

BTW, do you have any kids that are 19/20/21? Living outside of your parents house at 19 decidedly does not make you an adult.....

I really must go in a few, but first I must ask:

What exactly does make one an adult?

Good question.....I would think what makes a person an adult is how they accept their responsibilities, remembering all actions have consequences and dealing with life's problems in an appropriate respectful manner........I know many people who are adults in age but act inappropriately when faced with life's hardships..
