I was reading a thread over in the theme park boards and saw a long OT discussion about whether or not using "JC" (initials for Jesus Christ) is a curse word. So I thought I'd post here rather than go OT over there. I suppose the controvery is about those instances when it is used as an exclamation or expletive. Some posters saw no problem with it being used this way, while others said they would be offended.

As a Christian I would not utter "JC" (expanded) as an exclamation. Not because I equate it with a curse word (as in the 7 you never say in TV), but as a matter of respect. It is not respectful to use the Lord's name in that way. At the same time, unlike many Christians, I am not nearly as offended by f-bombs and other classic cuss words as I am by disrespectful use of the Lord's name... But that's just how I am :goodvibes

Yes it's a cuss word and when people say it around me I ask them to please not say that.

It will depend on your beliefs.. I would never use the phrase "JC" just sounds dumb to me...

JC....well, I don't think of it as a "curse", but I am careful not to say it in front of others in case THEY think it is.

Some people don't like "Oh god!" or "G-damn" either.

When I was a kid and would moan about a chore I didn't want to do, I'd say "Oh gaaaaawwdd...", my mom would say "God has nothing to do with it!" lol

No, I don't consider it to be a cuss word. I would refrain from using it around others, though - you never know what offends someone and I would rather be polite and respectful of someone else's feelings.

If I'm alone or with someone I know also uses it, it's just as likely to come out of my mouth as any of my other "choice" phrases!!

Don't consider it a curse word. Not nice to here though.

I owuld say it i a "not nice word" It doesn't come off as offensive to me but I know it would to others.

I agree with this--I, as crude and unladylike as it is, swear like a sailor. (I'm trying to break the habbit, because I would like to try and become pregnant in the next year, and I want to clean up my act before baby comes along!) But I hardly ever use "J.C.". The couple times I have it was something SERIOUS...and I still felt bad.

And I'm not even that devout!! How's that for funny?

Don't consider it a cuss word ~ Just don't like hearing it.

Not a bad word, just not very polite in mixed company.

But the reason this came up was it was a thread about what CMs had said that blew them away (in a bad way). Somebody said that one cursed around her and that she thought about reporting it, but didn't. Then people disagreed that it wasn't a curse word, then others backed her up, etc etc.

I don't know Disney's official stance, but I would think the CM should refrain because who knows who they would offend.

ETA - But I don't think using God is offensive. I suppose it probably does offend somebody, but I can't imagine not saying it occasionally...

What about "OMG" or the long version of the same? I'm careful not to type this but I admit that I sometimes think it. I guess that it's a curse word too.

My next question: What do you call a word that's not a cuss word, but not a word fit for all situations.

Does it fall into the same category as proper anatomical names for body parts? You know, words that you just don't want to hear?
