Janis Joplin - Does anyone else NOT get the appeal?

Count me as another that cannot stand her music or her. Anyone that was a druggie like her does not have my respect...period.

I was making a real attempt to "get" her.;)

It didn't work.:hippie:

I was kind of giving you a hard time, but having "made the attempt" deserves some props. Good for you for giving Pearl a shot. :thumbsup2

Both my DH and I don't get her either. I do like Bobby McGee.

Sometimes it is the song, back in the 60's there was a hit called "Somewhere" and I loved the song, but the group that sang it was awful. Of course I think that was their only hit.

"Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz,
My friends all drive Porsches,I must make amends."

Now,I'll have Janis in my head all night but that's ok 'cause I love her music!

Count me in as another Janis fan.
I really love her music, it's so powerful and raw. There's something about her voice that really speaks to me, especially on the really sad songs. Whenever I'm feeling depressed, all I have to do is pop in my Greatest Hits cd and I'm feeling better. There's something about driving down the road, windows down, stereo cranked and Janis blaring from the speakers that just makes me very, very happy.

Thats the ringtone on my phone... I too Love Janis she HAS to be awesome or they would never have named a muppet after her right?

I like 60's music too much to not allow myself to listen to anyone who was on drugs heck I'd have to dig pretty deep in my 60's Rock collection to find someone who hasn;t admitted to drugs :hippie:

You can't be "told" into getting Joplin or Hendrix or Young or any musician. You either get it or you don't. It's emotion, soul.

I adore Janis, that's why I'm KozmicLee (after "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again, Mama")

She's just like Billie Holiday for me, when either of them opened their mouth it was like they were opening their soul and even though it wasn't always pretty it felt raw and real, and I love that.

My favorite song by her is called "Maybe" and I lost my CD with it on and haven't been able to find the song again. :confused3

Didn't "get" her or Jimi Hendrex, have no taste for either one.:confused3

This is exactly right. Those of you who say you don't get the music of Janis, Jimi, or anyone else, don't have to get it, and there is nothing anyone could possibly say to you that would suddenly turn on a switch that would make this music appealing to you. We're all wired different, so if you don't like it just let it go and move on.

One word - Drugs

Lots of her target audience was under the influence.

Insulting those of us who liked that music back in the day and even now, and suggest that we were or are under the influence is just plain wrong and uncalled for. What ever gave you that idea?

I like a few of her songs but that's about it. I really don't understand what made her so great though.

I often wonder what Simon would say if she, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc. were to come on AI.:)

I like her because I can belt out one of her songs and not feel too bad that my voice sucks. ;)

When Janis opened her mouth, her soul poured out. She was pure and raw. That is why I love her.
What she said!

I was just telling my DS (14) about Janis the other day, because I got a "Doors" CD for Christmas and we were talking about "old" music.
