Angel16--Thanks so much for your useful comments! I'll be sure we follow your tips. My kids (young adults really) are both type 1 diabetic and sometimes the heat really plays with their sugar levels so all the helpful tips are great. Thanks again!

SplashMom...I understand your concerns about August heat. We've been there May, June, July, August, and September and experienced the heat. Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. Drink lots of water on a regular basis. Take along water bottles, and keep yourself hydrated. Even if you're not really thirsty...take a drink. When you're really thirsty it's too late. At that point you're already working on dehydration.

2. Hats...wide brims if possible. Keeps your face shaded and cooler.

3. Sunscreen...use lots. Protect your skin from the sun.

4. Midday breaks at AKL...use the pool...hot tubs are in a shaded area...and enjoy the many activities that are inside the air conditioned lodge such as cookie decorating, etc.

The "Girl" is the photographer. I was actually telling DH when we got home that I am going to have to buy him his own camera so that there might actually be some pictures of me every once in a while.

So tell me more about turn down service, please.

Upon arrival call Mousekeeping and request turndown service. Each evening Mousekeeping will come to your room and "tidy up", turn down your bed, and place a delicous foil wrapped chocolate on your pillow. At AKL they also will lay an "African Proverb" card on the bedside table. We had quite a collection by the end of the week! We tip extra for this service. As of last December there was no extra charge, however, things might have changed. Also, concierge automatically gets turndown service. Non-concierge rooms are not guarateed "turndown". If for some reason, Mousekeeping is too busy, non concierge rooms may not recieve this service. However, rarely have we been missed (includes stays at CR, WL, BC)

We went in June & Oct. of last year & I think it was hotter in Oct. I bought some bandana neck coolers & they worked great at keeping us cooled down. Just remember to drink plenty of water & wear light clothing. Taking a break in the afternoon helps as well, unless you like to go commando

Anyone have any advice on how to handle August heat? We aren't used to it being so hot and I am a bit concerned.

I know the feeling. I would have to hire a photographer to get in any pictures.

ROAR!!! I want to join the Wild Bunch...I've had the ticker for a while and need to join ZDA! Maybe the Tag Fairy will grant my wish. I even convinced my family to stay at AKL after falling love with it last year; doesn't staying there 2 yrs in a row help?

I think that could be easily done! I love the Zawadi Marketplace. I wish I could afford some of the grogeous prints they have in there.
