well last night i watched this program on Walt's life from birth to death and although I know alot about him there were a couple things I didnt know..
1. I never knew that he and his wife had adopted their 2nd daughter Sharon...i always thought Lillian had her natural childbirth but I guess she had several miscarriages and her dr told her she shouldnt have anymore..
2. I knew that Walt and Roy had brought their parents out to live in CA from KS and bought them a house in the valley..what I didnt know though was that the house had a faulty gas tank that leaked alot and they kept trying to fix it to no avail and in the end caused his mother to die from the fumes not too long after they moved there...
I knew that Walt was a very hands on father and took his girls every sunday and did some sort of outing with them and one of the places he took them was to a place with a small carousel and while they were riding he would sit on a bench and eat peanuts...during this time he started thinking there should be a place where kids and adults alike could go and play and have fun...which leads me to the #3 thing I didnt know and the biggest of all..
a few years after the end of WW2, while Europe was trying to pick up the pieces from the devestation from it, England was no longer allowing USA to come film movies and keep all the money for themselves...so when Walt wanted to come there to film Treasure Island, he was told exactly that and Walt agreed to compensate England tremendously...while they were there filming, he went to Copenhagen...towards the end of the 1940's, amusement parks were known for being 2 things..A. dirty B. seedy...not places a parent would allow children to go to by themselves...when Walt visited Copenhagen he went to a very famous amusement park called Tivoli Gardens...Ive known about this place since I was a kid because I had a book about this girl who lived very close to TG and went regularly and it showed pictures of the place and what rides she went on and I really liked it...well Walt did too..in fact he loved it!!!...he was very impressed at how clean and smoothly run it was and he loved the popcorn lights (which is why Main St. has them to this very day)...this people!!
THIS was the inspiration and the beginning of
MY favorite place in the world.......
