It all started with a whopping price error, and then…

It’s true, my love of family vacations at WDW started with a whopping price error. Sadly, there is no whopping price error in this trip report. I paid through the nose this time.

That’s what happens when WDW gets their hooks in you. Your days are spent dreaming of your next trip. You plan it to the nth degree. When the planning is done, the endless tweaking begins. Between planning binges you read trip reports. You already knew this, right? Why else would you be here?

Once upon a time I did find a whopping price error. If you want to read about it, grab your favourite beverage, a tissue or two and follow the link in my signature. It was quite a ride. The highs were breathtaking. The lows were crushing.

This is the “and then” portion of my family’s WDW vacation journey.

For those who have not and will not read the other TR here is the Cole’s notes version of who we are.

familypicOlivanders.jpg

I am A&Bmama, mother of two, wife of one. I was also dubbed, “The Best Travel Agent in the Whole World” on this trip by my family. It’s a shame that it is an unpaid position. I work seasonally, 7 months a year and I get to be a SAHM for the other 5 months! I am economically disciplined. Not cheap, economically disciplined, there’s a difference. Seriously. There is.

My wonderful DH will be dubbed “DH” ‘cause I’m real creative like that. He is a hardworking man who loves to kick back in the sun with his family when vacation rolls around. When DS was much smaller he started calling his father “The Fixer” which is quite fitting. DH is a Jack-of-all-trades, and master of a couple. When the chips are down DH is a great person to have by your side.

My first born, DS is 17. DS is a very quiet young man; he only speaks when he really has something he deems worth saying. He works very hard at never showing emotion, positive or negative. On our last trip DS was to celebrate his 16th birthday in WDW. Those of you who read my last TR know that tragedy struck and that DS found himself home on his 16th birthday without any celebration at all. This trip took place a couple of weeks before his 18th birthday and I planned a very special surprise for him!

My cute as a button DD is 11 . . . going on 18. She is the polar opposite of her brother. Her emotions can’t be hidden they are worn on her sleeve. She loves dance and gymnastics. She is a very loving child always wanting and giving affection. So far teen angst has not hit and she still likes her parents. I hope it never changes.

If you read my last TR you know that this trip was supposed to be a Universal/Seaworld trip rather than a WDW vacation. If you still haven’t read my last TR I have to ask; how many times to I have to beat you over the head with it before you just read it?

Fate intervened and instead of having a one week school break in March we found ourselves with a two week school break in February. This was due to the Canada Winter Games being held in Halifax during that time frame. So our trip was expanded to include time at WDW as well. Since free dining was also during our time frame it was decided that we would stay on site for most of the trip and travel offsite to visit SW, US, IOA and DC. We also worked in a few days on the beach in the St. Petersburg area before heading home. It was a jam packed adventure!

There was some debate over which resort to pick. Isn’t there always? At the beginning of the trip we were booked for 5 days at the Beach Club. Once we decided we would be on-site longer we changed it POR.

I admit it.

This decision caused me to suffer from resort envy on more than one occasion while planning the trip.

Not that I didn’t think I would like POR, I did. I just thought I would like BC more.

My economically disciplined side was wrestling with the notion that the increase in price was disproportional to the increase in enjoyment of the resort. The increase in price seemed to far outweigh the benefit of staying at a "better" resort.

So we settled on POR and were done with that decision.

Sort of

Maybe we should actually stay at POFQ? About half of the rooms would be renovated by the time we arrived. I would request a renovated room and since we would be arriving while occupancy would still be on the low side I might have a pretty good chance of getting one.

But

When I look at pics of POFQ they just don’t speak to me the way POR does.

Or

Maybe we should stay at CSR? The rooms look fantastic there and they use the same toiletries as the deluxe resorts.

Seems I have developed a bit of resort amenities obsession. I fell in love with the H2O products while staying at AKL. I admit when I first joined the DIS and discovered that there were people who worried about such trivial things I thought it was just a wee bit crazy. God saw fit to make me walk a mile in their shoes.

Like POFQ, CSR just doesn’t speak to me the way POR does so we stick with our decision. I don’t look back . . . often.

As is usually the case I find they things that I worry about, I needn’t have.

Our WDW package will not start until Feb 11 and we arrive on Feb 10. I decide that I will book us at Loews Royal Pacific for our arrival night so that we can take advantage of early entry for WWoHP and use FOTL privileges. Our POR stay will be Feb 11-20 and we will be at Treasure Island Feb 20-23.
We considered staying for the full 2 week which would have us travelling home on the 24th but I needed to make sure our trip was completed before Feb 24. The 24th is my father’s birthday. It is also the day we embarked on out very first WDW adventure. That time frame is just too emotionally loaded for me so I cut the trip back by a day.

Is it possible I am first? Wow that never happens for me!! So excited for this TR and loving your plans - can't wait to get into the full swing! :cool1:

I have a feeling this is going to be a good one! I'm going to read your first TR right now. Nothing better to do while the child naps. Those dishes in the sink can wait, right?

I read your first report and I am on board for the 2nd!! I stayed at POR last year and really liked it there.

I'm so hoping this trip wasn't such an emotional roller coaster for you! You have such a fantastic writing style. I'm in!!

You are indeed first. Welcome.

I have a feeling this is going to be a good one! I'm going to read your first TR right now. Nothing better to do while the child naps. Those dishes in the sink can wait, right?

I hope I can make this a good TR. Thanks for reading!

I read your first report and I am on board for the 2nd!! I stayed at POR last year and really liked it there.

I remember you from the last one! I have to say I was very pleased indeed with POR.

I'm here! So glad you're back and can't wait to hear about it!

Yay Dugette! I am so glad you are here.

I'm so hoping this trip wasn't such an emotional roller coaster for you! You have such a fantastic writing style. I'm in!!

It was a great trip. It had moments that were less than stellar but overall, fantastic!

I'm here!! And yes you've hit me over the head enough I'm going to go read your first tr now lol

Jumping in...and planning on spending tomorrow morning reading your first report!

I read your last trip report and am looking forward to this one! Hope you had a great trip and everything went according to plan :goodvibes

Just finished reading your first trip report . . . what a strong woman you are. If I could figure out how to subscribe, I would (I'm new to the boards and new to planning a Disney vacation too!)

We're taking our whole family (Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle, 2 year old Cousin, Mom, Dad, 4 year old DS, 2 year old DS and 1.5 year old DD) for a week in May . . . I'm not sure I know what we're in for!

I spent the better part of my morning reading your first TR. That was a roller coaster ride of a report! I am so sorry for the loss of your father. I lost my mom a few years ago in April and come Christmas I didn't want to be around anyone so DH & I went to WDW! It was the best decision ever- we spent the week after Christmas there and had a great time. Nothing like Disney to help with the blues.I do hope you got to see more of the World Showcase this trip, its one of my fav places.

Can't wait to hear all about this trip!!!

I read your previous trip report yesterday. I"m looking forward to reading this one. :)

We did have a great trip, not everything went according to plan but it never does, does it?

Glad you signed on to read this TR.

Welcome! Thanks, but I think we are all all only as strong as we have to be in any given situation.

Wow that is a big group with a lot of little ones. You'll have a great time.

Thanks for reading the old TR. It was real roller coaster ride.

I think you made a great decision about going to WDW for Christmas too. There are so many traditions and memories of the holidays that when someone is missing, it leaves a gaping hole and everything just feels a little bit wrong.

I spend my days happily planning our upcoming vacation. I think the planning is my favourite part.

TS meals are something new for us. Our last on-site visit we were on the QSDP. I enjoy researching our options and making ADRs. I spend may a happy hour looking at resort photos. I research on the non-Disney parks we will visit, happy in the knowledge that there are many new expriences ahead of us.

I love the blank slate in front of me. That this trip can be anything you want it to be. When the trip is still in its fantasy stages it is perfect. We are never too tired, too full, hungry, cold, hot or too rushed to enjoy ourselves. In my fantasy vacation I have lost the pesky 5lbs I am always trying to get rid of. I have a good hair day every day. My eyes are never bleary from lack of sleep. My family is happy.

As the plan takes shape and is finalized I begin to feel twinges of discontent. We have a lot of ground to cover if we are to visit 8 parks in 9 ½ days. I begin to worry about things that could go wrong, sickness, travel delayed by storms, bad weather in Orlando.

There is also a sense that since I planned this so thoroughly and spent so much time researching all the details that I have somehow already taken this trip, albeit, in my mind. A sense that I have already taken the perfect vacation in fantasy form, so perfect that the reality of actually living it out could never match.

Just as my discontent is growing my family is getting excited. Apparently, I am the only one in my household that gets excited about a trip 6 months in advance. I am also the only one who suffers from cold feet when it is close.

I thought this time might be different. This time I might wake on the morning of departure excited and optimistic about the adventure that lies ahead. It was too much to hope for and it wasn’t to be.

I pack our bags and finalize our preparations and begin packing our bags. DD is big enough to ride all of the rides at WDW but no so for SW/UA/IOA. The larger coasters have a height restriction of 54”. DD 1/2” too short when she wears her thickest soled sneakers. We did what anyone would do; we stretched her.

Dh hangs her by her ankles to see if gravity will help do the work.

We gather more people to help with the job.

We measure again.

IMG_1459.jpg

Gosh darn it. I don’t think it worked.

On the day of travel we woke at 3:30 in the morning. The only thing worse than a long travel day, is a long travel day after only 3 hours of sleep. Thankfully, there was no fresh snow and wasn’t supposed to be in Toronto either so our connecting flight should be fine as well.

Remember “Bob” from my last trip report? That man got up a 4am to drive us to the airport. We didn’t ask. We were going to leave our car at the airport; Bob insisted that he would drive us to the airport and pick us up again on or return.

No direct flights for us this time. Usually you are able to find decent airfares from Halifax during this time frame. Since this year we had the school break in Feb., there was much higher than usual demand so naturally the deals were non-existent. Forget about direct flights, I could have bought myself a nice used car with the price I would have paid for direct flights for 4 people.

The airfares were so high into Orlando that I started looking for fares into other Florida cities as an alternative. The flights into Tampa were a little more reasonable so I booked those. We were renting a car anyway and had done the drive between Tampa and Disney before and it wasn’t bad at all. Plus, we wanted to do a few days at the beach in that area at the end of our trip so it would be closer for our return flight.

We flew into Toronto and had a 4 hour layover there. Our flight from Toronto to Tampa had us landing at 2:30 pm.

Our flights were uneventful which is always fantastic. We nabbed our bags and headed to pick-up our rental car. We rented through Budget and I signed us up for their fastbreak service. Awesome service! We went straight to the counter in the garage and they had our keys and paperwork ready to sign. Took like all of 2 minutes before we were in our shiny red Chrysler 300. We loved that car. I loved that I got a free upgrade through my travel credit card. The car cost is $275.00 for a 2 week rental, a good deal in my books!

Soon we are cruising to Orlando in our swanky car. Remember my last TR where DH forgot the camera? I left him in charge of packing electronics this time although; I did leave him a list. We are taking quite a large amount with us; 3 digital cameras, 1 digital underwater camera, a GPS, 2 laptops and 2 cell phones.

While DH packed all of the electronics he neglected to pack the charger. I later find out that he did not pack ANY of the chargers for our devices. My camera takes batteries so it is fine and I packed the cell phone chargers so they are good too. The laptop chargers are always kept in the carry cases when not in use so they made it too.

I do take some of the blame for this. Even though I did leave him a list of the devices we were taking along with their chargers and batteries, I didn’t actually discuss the fact that I had made a list with him. I just left the 3X5 piece of paper on which it was written on top of the pile of electronics that DH had begun to gather. Apparently he didn’t see it or read it and tossed it out of his way.

We quickly decide that we will only use the GPS to get us to the highway and then turn it off after that to conserve the battery life. Hopefully the signs will guide us after that.

Did we get lost? Of course.

Am I cranky? Yes.

Am I vowing to never let DH pack anything other than his own clothes again? You betcha.

We hit the Orlando area and stop at Publix for a few supplies and then are looking for someplace to grab a bite to eat before we check in at Royal Pacific. We just want to grab some fast food but I want to try one of the chains that we don’t have at home. That’s what vacations is all about, new experiences. Why is it that I see all of these different places when we aren’t planning to eat, then when we are, nothing?

Sure would have been nice if we had a GPS we could use to see what was around us . . . We (I) lose patience after 15 minutes of driving aimlessly and stop at the first McDonald’s we see.

Once our tummies were full we drove around trying to find the Hotel. Finally, we find it. We are greeted with a big “Aloha” by the door men. My first impressions of the resort are that it is amazing. Check- in process is a breeze and we head to our room.

Gone are the days when you can just go to your room and relax. Now you have to 1) find your room 2) tear it apart looking for bed bugs 3) reassemble everything and remake the beds. Ugg, so the last thing I want to do after a long day of travel. On the bright side, our room was clean so there was not need to rinse and repeat.

Once the room gets the all clear signal DH and DS head off to the car to start bringing in luggage. I call housekeeping to order a rollaway for DD to sleep on.

I had planned to pack an inflatable mattress but space was tight in the luggage. I requested AB at POR so that we can have a trundle and because this area appeals to me the most. I think that it is quite likely the request will be honoured since we are arriving in low season so there ”should” be plenty of available rooms. Our condo on the beach has 2 beds and a sofa bed so our first night at Royal Pacific is likely the only night where the inflatable would be absolutely needed. It costs $25 for the use of a rollaway but it will save us from hauling the air mattress, setting it up after a long travel day and having to deflate and repack it when we are trying to get out of the room by 7:30 am. It’s worth it in my books, so we go with it.

Housekeeping arrives to set up the rollaway just as DD and I are finishing washing our hands. I apply some of the Lather moisturizer, I love the smell and DD and I are talking about how nice it is and how good it feels on our parched winter skin. I ask the housekeeper if they have it for sale in the gift shop and she tells me she doesn’t think so but she will bring me some more.

A few minutes later she is back at our room and she brings us a BAG FULL of the room amenities.
3 shampoos
3 conditioners
3 body washes
3 bath soaps
3 face soaps
6 moisturizers

I tipped her a few bucks and consider it the best money I ever spent!

Here are my goodies!

Once Dh and DS arrive back with the luggage we relax in the room for a little while. We snap a few pictures.

IMG_1467.jpg

DD is happy.

IMG_1468.jpg

DS is trying to prevent his picture being taken.

IMG_1469.jpg

I'm trying to get a sneaky picture of him.

We head out on a walk to the parks just to get some idea of the layout and where we need to go in the morning. The grounds are spectacular, even in the dark.

We snap a few pictures outside the parks and head back to the room to relax and enjoy ourselves.

I did something a little bit bad before we left home. I bought myself a pack of cigarettes. I used to be a smoker but I gave it up years ago. I still do have a cigarette a couple times a year when I am having a drink with someone who smokes. I was thinking that I would like to have a cigarette with my wine in the evening so I bought a pack. Just one pack though, and it has to last me the whole two weeks so I will only able to have one or two per evening.

I grab a cigarette and pour myself some wine into one of the in room disposable coffee mugs and head to the smoking area. It is cool and misty outside. The bench is quite wet but it doesn’t matter. I sit and sip my wine and having a cigarette to go with it is pure bliss. I reflect on how happy I am that we finally made it and how amazing it feels to have our whole vacation ahead of us to look forward to. My angst has dissolved and I am nothing but happy.

I enjoyed that cigarette so much I decide that tonight will be a two cigarette night. I will make another trip back to the smoking area but for now I am heading to my room to wash my hands, brush my teeth and spend some time with my family.

We wander around the resort some more and DH goes to see concierge to find the location of some electronics stores in the area. Hopefully, we can find an inexpensive GPS charger. The kids are in the lobby using their laptops and chatting with friends back home.

I head back to the smoking area for my second cigarette. As I am enjoying my wine and smoke I am reflecting on the day and “writing” my TR in my mind. Suddenly I am a little sad that I decided against writing a PTR, I have the urge to post that we made it, that we are here. I decide to hijack one of the laptops for a minute and make a quick post on Dugette’s TR to let her know that we arrived.

We head back to our room to settle in for the night. I get ready for bed but can’t drop off to sleep. I am completely exhausted but still wired at the same time. I head into the bathroom and write TR notes.

I thought it would be good to have a picture of me writing the notes so I tried to take a self portait.

First I get this while trying to turn the camera on.

IMG_1492.jpg

Then I get the shot.

IMG_1498.jpg

At last I feel sleepy so I settle into bed.

Sounds nice! I need to take a fantasy vacation. On the real ones, I end up gaining that pesky 5 pounds!

That is hilarious!!! :lmao:

Wow! Too bad that you have to go the non-direct and non-Orlando route. Sounds like it worked out okay (probably better than driving a new used car there!)

While DH packed all of the electronics he neglected to pack the charger. I later find out that he did not pack ANY of the chargers for our devices.
Oh no! :sad2: Lucky that several of the chargers managed to make the trip anyway!

Why is it that I see all of these different places when we aren’t planning to eat, then when we are, nothing?
Seems like one of those crazy laws of the universe. Part of the same set of laws that says your cell phone will only ring when you walk away from it for a minute.

Suddenly I am a little sad that I decided against writing a PTR, I have the urge to post that we made it, that we are here. I decide to hijack one of the laptops for a minute and make a quick post on Dugette’s TR to let her know that we arrived.
I feel so special! :goodvibes

Looking forward to more! I'm interested to hear/see what it's like at Universal. I haven't been there for maybe 10 years (and that was a very brief visit).
