Hi! :wave:I’m Kelsey. And this is my first PTR! For now I’m a stay at home mom after we transplanted to Wisconsin last fall. In my previous life I worked in public media and broadcasting. I’m also a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Cameroon), which weirdly played a huge role in my Disney renaissance. :hippie:

I made my first adult trip to Disney World in 2010 as TOTAL skeptic. But in a few short days, I was not only reminded of all of the Disney stuff that I loved from my childhood, but was shown how much care Imagineers have put into the parks and resorts. AK and AKL absolutely blew me away, and I was incredibly moved to find real artifacts from the region where I served in the Peace Corps in the lodge. After being someplace so remote, cut off from the Western world, to have it represented at a theme park was extremely special. It was so impressive, that I just HAD to come back and stay there sometime (make way for our 2012 trip!).

Yes, in 2010 I surprised everyone and dressed up for dinner at Boma. Not sure why, but it was pretty fun! This is a traditional robe from the region of Cameroon where I served at AKL.

We also ate and drank around the world and had SO much (adult) fun... I had no idea! :drinking1Add in the amazing service, food and booze, and it was a done deal... I know, I know... YOU get it! After every trip (except the one in the hurricane on the boat… it took me a few weeks to get over that one), I have come home to plan another! So I’ll jingle my way through this trip report, even though its SERIOUSLY early (hey… park hours are OUT, so why not?). A few more details on me:

My favorite...
Park: Epcot & AK tie!
Character(s): Winnie the Pooh, Snow White
Ride(s): Spaceship Earth.. but my favorite thing to DO is sit around Africa and drink a Tusker
Food: Dole Whip half pineapple half vanilla FLOAT (4eva), Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake
Drink: Avocado marg at La Cava
Movie: The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland

And... to introduce the troop of fellow travelers:

Brian: My husband who WAS the bigger Disney fan, but we’ve switched roles. He now is the one encouraging us to take trips other than those to Disney (ummm, duh. We can do both). He works in advertising (media), but fancies himself a philosopher. He grew up going to Disney World and Disneyland.

Brian's favorite...
Park: Epcot
Character(s): Figment and Big Al
Ride(s): Spaceship Earth and Haunted Mansion
Food: Waffle sandwiches and Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake
Drink: "The Prescott" at the Rose and Crown (Boddingtons and Guiness)
Movie: Robin Hood and Sword in the Stone

I cry every time I hear the horn at the sail away party. Tears!
Maple (yep, really!): Our feisty, travel-hungry little Cinderella pumpkin. She will be 18 months old for her first trip to see Disney World (she’s been to two Disney properties before. Disneyland Paris at 16 weeks and Disney World at 24 weeks GESTATION. She also went to Castaway Cay on that trip. Yea, she was a worldly little fetus). So far in her short time here, she’s fallen for Pooh pretty hard... mostly just Zooey Deschanel's sweet voice singing Hoooooney (someone else may have fallen for that, too?!). But she also likes dry, crispy leaves and lint… so I’m sure we’ll be able to find something she enjoys. Her schedule and still unknown 18-month old needs will dictate a lot of our plans, and I'm hoping for good advice (and be candid!) from any/all of you readers with young child experience!

Yea, she's the cutest... this was when she was 12 days old!

Eh... one more for good baby introduction measure.
Randy and Rae Ann: My in-laws! Truly awesome, generous, fun people! They come from Idaho, are serial Disney-goers, AP holders and are always up for anything! This upcoming cruise with be their 10th (yea, platinum!), and Rae Ann knows just about everything there is to know about WDW. :bitelip:

12/16-12/21 Wilderness Lodge
12/21-12/24 Disney Dream Christmas Cruise! :santa:

Thanks again for reading along, and I look forward to sharing the trip after we get back! 219 days!!

Good to know! Even though she won't remember the trip, she will have so much fun in the moment. And who cares what she remembers, anyway! I don't remember 1/2 of my trips, and I still want to go again!!

Sticky - Icky - No Get... Sickie?
May 14, 2015

I was hoping to get through a bigger update with some of the why's of our trip... but it looks like it will have to wait. Maple has been sick with something (Foot and Mouth, we think... but could possibly be strep, or COULD be just teething? Babies are so weird!), and though some people say that they get everything done when their kids are sick, I can barely keep the kitchen clean and let the dog out! We had the stomach bug a few weeks ago, and haven't 100% recovered from that fiasco!

BUT, the timing is good to bring up a question for you all. What tips do you have to keep your kids CLEAN at WDW?! We recently visited the zoo here in Green Bay, and it was a DISASTER. I actually think she might have picked up the stomach thing there. I could just not keep her clean, hands out of her mouth, and there were children and wood chips and poop EVERYWHERE.

She's just a crawler right now, and I would imagine she will be toddling/walking by the time we go which will improve the distance from people's filthy shoe-bottoms somewhat. However, I think she will still love sitting on the ground, touching everything, hands in mouth... AGGGHH! I know Disney is the cleanest of the amusement parks, but its still dirty (though I would like to imagine that the germs at Disney ARE more fun)...

giphy.gif

And because we have a cruise immediately following our time in the parks, I'm worried that she could pick something up and potentially not be able to board. Outside of having her wear gloves and sanitizing every five minutes, what advice do you all have? (I should mention that I am NOT a germaphobe, but do tend to be a bit more conciencious of things before/during vacations. She plays in the dirt plenty! She has even eaten so goat poop, so... I'm a good mom?)

Also, does anyone else get a little grossed out by their stroller wheels? Sometimes I'm getting the stroller in the car and I'm like...

Any ideas?

When my youngest was a toddler and we went anywhere at all he got into every gross thing he could find. I just kept a LOT of spare clothes, baby wipes, hand sanitizer (for me), and a plastic bottomed blanket to give him a radius of clean space. lol. Good luck to you and I hope those with little ones give advice! :D

Nice to meet you, Rebecca! I don't think a PTR is too early as long as its interesting! And you seem to find really interesting ways to keep yours readable, even over a year out! I might even steal a few of them! :thumbsup2

Plastic bottomed blanket is a great idea. I was thinking about putting something together for the upstairs bedrooms area... a "puke kit" that would include: a bedazzled/stickered bucket (because wouldn't that make vomiting more fun??), a painting dropcloth (a tarp seemed a little extreme), some throw-away toothbrushes, a couple of trash bags, a bottle of cleaner and some throw-away rags. Just so we're READY TO GO next time (we had norwalker virus just a few weeks before this last illness... brutal!). Of course, I would probably not bring a puke kit to disney... but maybe i could bring the dropcloth... a BEDAZZLED dropcloth. Ideas!

Thanks for reading!! :hyper:

Wow steal away! :D Umm, what did you find interesting just curious?
Plastic bottomed blanket is a great idea.
They were a lifesaver for me, especially if say baby changing areas were not as clean as I would like, then I just put it down and had a safer space, then that blankie would be put in a ziplock to deal with at home.

:welcome: and ! Thanks, I think she pretty adorbs, but she's my kid... so I'm probably biased. But maybe not? She is super cute. She is cuter than most babies, right? Right?! :rotfl:Thanks for reading along!

WHY? Seriously, do I even have to write this?
May 25, 2015

It’s not difficult for my MIL and I to find a way to rationalize a trip to Disney World (or a Disney cruise!), but here are a few of the “whys”.

Why Christmas?

We decided with the birth of Maple Moo that we would switch off Christmas and Thanksgiving between our parents. Last year was Christmas in Wisconsin with my parents, this year we’ll have Christmas with my in laws. But here’s the hitch… my MIL is RETIRING this year! And they have no desire to stay in their chilly northern state for winter (nor do I have a desire to travel to said northern state for Christmas). SO… why not kick off their retirement with a trip to Disney!? I mean, seriously? Twist their arms. The timing is perfect! :hyper:

I have never been down for Christmas, so this will be my first visit to see the decorations, the Osborne lights, to hit MVMCP, etc. Ugh, I’m so excited… Thank GOODNESS its almost summer, because I can survive not going to Disney when the weather outside is Florida-like!
Also — BABYS FIRST DISNEY TRIP. Need I say more? :santa:

Why a Three Night Disney Dream Cruise?

Now, I should say that I hate crowds. I cannot tune things out and do have a bit of a tendency to get flustered if there is too much going on, we’re not moving fast enough, etc. I’m working on it, okay?! But yes, even at Disney I sometimes have little freak outs where my husband needs to quickly find me a cupcake, coffee or an adult beverage. We tend to avoid the crowds by heading down in slow fall and late winter months, so this trip will be a change. However, in order to avoid the true melt downs, we decided to go on a short cruise right before Christmas instead of staying at the parks. I would have loved to sail over Christmas, but GOOD LANDS its $$$$$$. I’m very fortunate, but I’m not a Kardashian. We just got a new mortgage, I’m not sure they would give us a second one right away.

We love cruises because they’re VERY classy, VERY Disney and its wonderful to have a cap on the number of people on the ship to ensure you’re getting a quality experience. Also, we tend to head down during cooler times of year, and there is nothing like jumping in ocean water and laying in the sun. We’ve had our fair share of 50 degree and rainy Disney days, so it will be nice to get south. However, I’ve only been on 7-night cruises in the past and I’m already feeling disappointed with the length. :sad2: We’ve not been on the Dream before, and I’m concerned that I’m not going to get in everything I’d like. But really? Even one day on a Disney cruise is better than no days!

Why Wilderness Lodge?

Because it’s the holidays and the theme fits the season, and because we’ve never stayed there, we thought the Wilderness Lodge would be fun to try. We rented DVC points and are staying at the villas. I hear they have some of the best-decorated Christmas trees on property, I’ve been looking forward to dining there and they have a geyser. Obviously!

giphy%201_zpsvd1z2tdx.gif

The BURNING Question :furious:

Annual Passes. Do we or don’t we?? :confused3

As I mentioned earlier, the in-laws are retiring. They are staying in Florida until March… and are going to rent a house. And there is strong likelihood that my parents will also be in Florida (Keys) and that we’d end up back in the Sunshine State early next year. ALSO, Thanksgiving will be with the in-laws… and I’ll probably push for another Disney trip! So I think we’d get the value out of the AP. HOWEVER, it might mean waiting until only 15 days before our trip to make FP+ reservations. Math time :sad2:: AP good for 365 days, trip on 16th dec 2015, Thanksgiving on 24 November 2016 -- I wouldn't be able to buy our APs until around November 25th of this year. A mere 3 weeks out!!! :scared1:

We could probably swap some FPs with my in-laws for say Mine Train, as they'll be living down there.... but :scared:. The crowds are going to be crazy, it makes me very uncomfortable to wait that long.

I also have another thought, and any of you AP holder can chime in here (all 4 of you who are reading!). I feel like having an AP would make us vacation DIFFERENTLY. For instance, we’re thinking of popping into the park for Wishes the night we arrive (16th December)… but only if we have the AP. Otherwise, it seems like a waste. Also, after we get off our cruise (Christmas Eve!) I thought perhaps we could stop in at one of the less crowded parks (AK, maybe?) for a few hours. Wouldn’t buy a ticket for that, we would only do it with an AP. And with a one year old, I feel like I would be more relaxed, head back to the resort for naps, etc, rather than push her so that we could soak it all in and get our moneys worth.

Here is a spreadsheet of my pros and cons, because crazy:

Screen Shot 2015-05-25 at 9.06.52 AM.png

It seems like AP is winning :jumping3:::yes::, but I'm sure I'm missing something! And some of the cons may have more weight than the pros. Insight welcome!

Have you considered buying base tickets now so you can make your fastpass reservations and then upgrade them to AP's when you check in at your resort? I may be wrong but I don't think it costs you anything extra to do that but it enables you to get your FP+ done at the 60 day mark.

Whhhhaaaaaaat?! You can do this? Well... then. It's 2 to 4 con to pro! AMAZING!

The Disney Dream at Christmas is exactly that...a Dream! Snow in the lobby, Christmas deck parties, Christmas trees, SANTA!! It was a truly beautiful cruise! DH and I love it so much :D

I have always wanted to stay at Wilderness Lodge. It is right up our alley. Hope renting DVC points goes well. I look forward to seeing a section about this in your TR so I can get the scoop on it. We had been contemplating doing this because we want to stay at some of the higher end resorts, but we can't always justify the price because we are always in the parks.

Enjoy! I will be following along! :D

I have nothing to contribute other than to say that on my last PTR I had to make a tough decision, and went into EXCEL and made a Pro/Cob table very similar to this. Spreadsheets make my heart go thumpa-thumpa. :lovestruc

Oh, and for what's it's worth, I personally think that buying an AP so you're "forced" to go back to WDW within a year should be in the PRO column. Just saying. ::yes::

Woot! Steal away! The kids and I are digging the movie list (that gets additions daily still :sad2: ) and sometimes Pete (the mister) enjoys them too. He asked to be re-included once we're to the movies he remembers from the '70's lol!
I know a lot of people do these, but yours is well done! And your GIFs are PERFECT.

We did a cruise in Hawaii long ago and did not much like the rude ways of other guests. The crew were wonderful, friendly, and really terrific people! A Disney cruise though sounds like an entirely different sort of experience, and I want to try one!

That sounds quite enchanting!

Yep, pretty sure!

You definitely can! That's what we did in 2013. Your AP expiration becomes the first date you use your ticket.

Everything on your pros list x 10. TIW is phenomenal.

APs are expensive but they open up all kinds of opportunities. Find a cheap flight to MCO? Why not! You can always get a cheap room. Find yourself in FL with a few hours to kill? Head to WDW!

We live in PA and will never not be AP holders ever again!

ADR stands for Absolutely Determined to Ram-As-Much-Food-In-As-Possible
May 30, 2015
So, its seems a bit silly to share all of my ADRs with everyone before I've even shared our parks schedule. But! ADRs are fast approaching, and I need some advice! Just as a reminder, we'll be down from 12/16-12/21, then we head for Port Canaveral and our Disney Dream three-night cruise, and then we'll probably with a brief stop back on Christmas Eve before we head to the gulf to avoid the Christmas crowd (and eventually fly home ).

Thanks to @Elevationist for all of the wonderful advice AND for putting together a wee spreadsheet thing for your ADRs.... I'm going to borrow it! Hope that's okay! I'll bring it back!
borrowing%20microwave_zpsg0c872li.gif

I've over-ADR'd slightly. I would really like to do ALL of these, but some budgetary considerations may come into play. But when it's busy at Disney, I really like to have something on the schedule to ensure that we can sit and eat SOMEWHERE. I have my first choice and my backups listed. So, without further ado, here is the plan:

Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 2.16.54 PM.png

Yes, that is a second dinner you see in there. HA. Milk shakes and french fries.

For some of these meals, my in-laws won't be with us, and for some they will and for a few, it will probably be DATE NIGHT for hubs and me (YEAAAA). One QUESTION for everyone -- with little kids, I've read that you SHOULD include them in your reservation head count. I've done that here. Anyone have experience with that? Does it matter? We have a high chair that connects to most tables (here is a photo in case anyone is curious). We love it because it brings her right up to the table, and if it's sticky, its sticky with something that she got on it, not some other filthy little urchin. I would imagine a 5-top would occasionally be more difficult to get than a 4-top, so if its questionable I would probably change all of these to 4s.

Like @Elevationist, I want to include my proposed list of ADR reservations in order of importance. Here's what I'm thinking, please chime in if you have additional advice.

1. BOG breakfast
2. Crystal Palace **Super important! Maple loooooooooves Pooh**
3. Ohana
4. Via Napoli
5. Chefs de France
6. Sanaa
7. LTT
8. Sci-Fi Dine in Theater
9. Yak & Yeti
10. Whispering Canyon Dinner
11. 50s Prime Time Cafe
12. Whispering Canyon Bfast

Add in about 1,000 half pineapple half vanilla dole whip floats because they are AMAZZZZINGGGGGG.
pooh%20honey_zps0klhtbru.gif

DOOOLLEEE WHIPPPPP FLOOOOATTTTTS (and cupcakes)

Here is a quick compilation of me with a few of my dole whips last year. This was about 1/10th of the total, but it seems I might have taken most of my photos on a now defunct iphone. I gained about 70 lbs with my dearest little daughter... 20 of those might have been dole whip floats.

Awww man, I loved that self-serve Dole Whip machine. I read that it is gone now that the Poly has been remodeled??

I think you definitely have the priority order correct as the first two are fairly high demand. I think you should be able to get the rest fairly easily. Although it has been a few years since I've had to make ADR's so I could be wrong!

My ADR window opens in 9 days, you guys are making me feel the pressure to get a list done up. If only the Candlelight Processional narrators were announced it would make planning so much easier!
