OP, you sound like a reasonable, thoughtful person. Don't stand for someone treating you poorly. Sounds like you have your head on straight and a good plan. There is no excuse in someone bad mouthing you. When I read your post, I thought there was a possibility that she did know you were in and out and maybe wanted you to hear her. There are some people like that.

Stand up to it when it happens again. The "country" statement was outrageous and spoke volumes. You might not change how she thinks of you, but you can set some boundries of right and wrong. She should treat you with respect even if she doesn't like you.

Why is it her DH's job to support the family financially, exactly?

Well, they were relying on her DH's family to provide them with shelter when they couldn't afford to rent their own home.

So, I guess a better question would be "Why is it her DH's parents job to support the family financially?"

Regardless--I am happy it will work out for the OP. She does seem like a nice person
