In your meeting, you should apologize "profusely" stating "I mistakenly thought we had a more informal relationship since you like to call me Toots."

I prefer to signal that I want someone's attention with a hearty "'Sup foo!"...just check my sig.

Thanks for the laughs! I wanted to ask, just in case I was the crazy one!
We were going to meet today but Her union prep wasn't there. BTW: her union prep is my friend. She told me not to make her laugh in the meeting! What a waste of time & money. Here we are facing lay offs and 6 people have to go to a meeting because I said"Hey!
I did meet with her boss and my boss instead. I told her boss that if she is this mad about me calling her "hey" she needs a mental evaluation! ans she (the boss) should be talking with her! not ALL of us. I printed out the Definition of Hey & Toots and give it to her boss.![]()
We have to meet next week.
What a day to quite smoking!![]()

I thought Hey was like saying Hi
I would complain about being called toots - if anything is not right it is that
Her boss asked if I can try not to call her hey from now on.
I can't wait for my DS16 to be done with school because I'm moving to Orlando ASAP! 2 1/2 years to go!
You guys/gals are sooo funny! Thank you!! I so needed this tonight!
Like I said earlier I stopped smoking yesterday, this person (I can't bring myself to write lady) isn't helping.

Agreed.
But you're not *calling her* "hey", it's just a way to casually start a sentence. You could say "Hey, Mary, the cards are restocked", and you're not calling her by the full name "Hey Mary", know what I mean?
Heck, go now! My mom moved across the country a week after I went to college, and it sucked JUST as much if not MORE as if she'd moved while I was in HS. At least I would have known the area when I came "home" from college! Go now!

Exactly! In the way the OP used it, it was like an informal form of "Excuse me." A way to get someone's attention before you just started talking.
I've heard the "Hey/Hay is for horses one" before, but this week I heard a new one which seems to apply in your situation. "Hey/Hay is the first step towards horse manure."![]()

I found out recently that some people think 'What?' is rude.
I was taught that saying "what?" when you didn't hear someone was rude. So I try not to say that. Blame my mom!
I voted "maybe" for saying hey. I was also taught that it was rude, but I've found that it varies depending on where in the country you live. In the south I see it's commonly used and not taken rudely. In the northeast (NYC, Boston, etc) I've found it's considered rude. So I try not to say that, either.
I don't think I'd be offended if someone said to me "hey, are you going to the show tonight?" But I would be offended if someone said "Hey" meaning to get my attention. But I wouldn't let the person know I was offended because I think hey is becoming more acceptable so I just need to catch up with the times.
