I've been eating these since my mother fed them to me as a kid. I buy them five or six times a year, usually for a stew, but sometimes to roast with potatoes and carrots. More often than not, it seems the supermarket cashiers, either young kids or even older adults, have no idea what they are and they have to ask me or another cashier.

I already stumped a cashier for 2016 earlier tonight. Nowadays I'm disappointed when they CAN identify them.

Here's a nice corkscrew one I bought last year.

I know broccoli, but I have never eaten a parsnip that I know of, and I don't think I've eaten turnips either.

People have to look up those, turnips, rhutebegas etc all the time when I shop. They seem pretty basic to me, but I guess not.

Yep, parsnips. I wouldn't expect everybody to recognize them, but I'm surprised by the large number of people who don't. Especially the supermarket cashiers. I suppose some of the cashiers may be new, but even experienced-looking cashiers are stumped sometimes.

Beef stew for dinner tomorrow. I already started. I think it tastes better when it cools and gets reheated. Potatoes, carrots, onions, celery, and of course, parsnips. They taste sweet and tender when slow cooked.

I know they are parsnips but I'm not a huge fan. I'll eat them (there really isn't any veggie I won't eat) but I won't go out of my way to buy them.

Parsnips. I don't eat them but my mother used to put them in stew all the time.
