Is this unreasonable? UPDATE

I think, deep down, this is the real bottom line here, if I'm not mistaken. And, I totally agree about not calling his company -- I would never do that, just as I would not want that done by my spouse to my company. Very embarrassing, and not appropriate in the least.

The being available or not is not what gets me mad, what gets me mad is that I have to pay for it too? trust me this company can pay $15 a month for the usew of the phone, that's all I would ask for!

Bottom line, IMO is this:

Your DH chose to get a cell phone, he wasn't told to get one by the company. When the company found out he had one, they asked for the number, and now they call him on the phone.

I'm sorry, but so what? If they didn't call him, you would still have the phone and would still be paying for it, so as long as the company time doesn't push him over the minutes, what difference does it make?

I find unreasonable that I have to pay for it because among other things, every person on the field has a cell phone paid for by the company, but because of the plan they have, their phones don't work in our area, so they choose to use my cell phone. That's fine, just pay a portion of it. What would the company do if dh didn't have a cell phone? They would probably get him one because they don't want to deal with the problems themselves.

Then maybe this is what you need to do. ;)

I agree with disneychrista, if its not in his contract to get calls off hours, and he does, then they need to see to it that he has a pager or a phone on which to contact him. Its their responsibility, not yours. Yes, you will probably still end up paying for the cell phone, but it will be for your personal use, not for the use of the company.

Unless I'm reading the above question incorrectly, you asked for our opinions on whether this was reasonable. If you don't wish to entertain any other opinions other than the one that matches your own, I don't see the point of this thread.

If the cell phone is being used primarily for work, then you can deduct this off your taxes if the company will not reimburse you. IMO, however, if the company wants your husband to be available 24/7 they need to pay for/provide the phone. I am required to provide oncall support for my department, therefore, my company provides me with a laptop and pager.

Here's my work cell phone story:
My boss called DH at home one weekend when she knew I was out of town and told him it was an emergency and she needed to speak with me, so he gave her my cellphone number. The emergency? She needed to call me at my sister's house to ask me where a document was on the network so she could update some department procedures. The next week, she handed out a new phone list to the entire department and sure enough there was my cell phone number. I told her to remove it and she told me she needed it in case she needed to get a hold of me. I asked if I would be reimbursed, she said no. I said, take it off. She did and no one at work has my cell phone number and no one will either. I have a land line, of which my company has the number and I also have a company issued pager.

Congratulations!

If I were you, I would go out and buy a new car, have your DH drive it for a few weeks, and then browbeat him into going to his boss and asking if they will make the payments, since he is using it to get back and forth from home to work.

AirforceRocks....I think you gotten into the area of personal attack you made your opinion known on the OP statement why not leaveit at that...the last post seemed unnecessary...JMHO

Kim, some people don't know how to talk without attacking, those I choose to ignore ;) .

The cell phone can be a sticky area...but my DH uses it 100% for work at a 1000 min. a month and usually goes over! They had better pay for it...he can use the corporate card to pay the cell bill with...

but I think I would be more concerned over the corporate credit card....first off they put it in his name BUT....anyone in the company can charge on it...but it goes on YOUR credit if they don't pay the bill! So, be careful!
