We have 160 pts. at AKV, which expires in 2057. Then I buy an add-on, say at VWL,for 150 pts. Now when 2042 rolls around, when VWL expires, my 310 pts. go back to 160 pts.???:confused3

Think about it this way: Points are not points. They represent an ownership interest in a specific property. And even more specific, they represent a right to use the property (basically a lease) up to a specific expiration date.

Your ownership properties have different expiration dates and you cannot use those properties after those dates.

Or think of it this way. You lease a new car today for 4 years. This means the lease expires in 2012. Next, you find and assume the lease on a car someone else had that started in 2006 and which was good for 4 years at that time. You now have both cars, but in 2010 the one car goes back per the original lease arrangement. It doesn't automatically go to 2012 just because you had another lease that went to that date.

With DVC both are 50 year leases. The difference is that one lease has already been used for 15 years.

Also when 2042 rolls around all owners of the non 2042 expiring resorts will have fewer stay options as these resorts will no longer be DVC (barring extension).

Yes and no - if looked at as "points are points", yes buying at AKV is wiser. However if you want to stay at the VWL in December, it would be wiser to purchase there so you can book at 11 months. Quite frankly 2042 is so far off, I think worrying about enjoying my vacations now is more important than something that will happen 34 years from now.

Does anybody really believe that they will keep their membership until it expires? I just don't think that that will happen. Everyones life can drastically change in 30 years.

If extensions are offered, how do you think that will work?? How much would it cost, etc.

I got to thinking about this and the answer to your question IMO is OF COURSE! Why not? Let's just say that there is no extension. At some point, nobody will want to buy your used contract with only 5 or 10 years leftover. The less time left on the contract, the less desireable to buy resale contracts, the less likely owners will be able to sell, thus owners keeping their contracts. Right?

While I can definitely see your point (I believe this is known as the theory of diminishing returns), in my opinion the "tipping point" against this would be based upon how much current points are selling for at that time AND how much cash reservations are going for at that time. For example, we only have 16-17 years of history to examine, but in that time the direct purchase price of points has doubled. What I do not know is whether cash reservations have increased that much, but I would not be surprised. So another 15-20 years from now if both point prices and cash reservation prices have increased on that pace, buying the last 10-15 years of an OKW contract resale at say $100 per point may look a whole lot more attractive to some than buying 50 years at VGF (Villas at the Grand Floridian -- a girl can hope!!) for $250+ per point.

As long as the overall value is better than paying cash through CRO, buying points direct or resale will be attractive. In other words, if a contract (i.e. 5-10 years left of enough points for about a week a year in a studio) costs less than those same 5-10 years of CRO reservations, it will sell. The closer we get to the end of these contracts the better we will be able to see if this is the case. Will the price be good enough that you will want to sell it? I cannot answer that, but I think our contracts will hold a certain value until the end. And if you simply sell it for the price you paid for it, you have vacationed for 30-35 years for the cost of owner's fees!

Blahnhe makes a good point! It has always been our intent to keep our points and pass them to our adult children when we either no longer want to use or can use them. Now if our children decide they don't want the burden of the maintenance fees, THEN it might be a "sell if you can" situation. I agree that the returns would be deminished with only 5-10 years left on a contract, but it still might be at least what some of us paid 10-15 years ago!

I purchased SSR and AKL so that i could have the timeshare longer.....personally I'd rather have BC or BWV but wanted more time. Which brings me to : I certainly plan on keeping my timeshare until the end!! :lovestruc I know things can change but i plan on passing my two contracts off to my two boys once they (now 3 years and 8 months) have their own lives/family.

First, let me apologize to the OP for getting off topic. Second, I completely agree with logic from the posters about whether or not one would keep their contracts for the next 40 or 50 years or buy when there is only a short time left on the life of the contracts. When we get 5 or 10 or 15 years out, the market will adjust and the supply / demand will shift and contracts will be sold for much less to make it more desireable for someone to own DVC if it is still more cost-effective than NOT owning DVC (renting rooms). And of course, this will all hinge on whether or not Disney extends the life of the contracts or has newer DVC resorts for owners to transfer to (presumably for a fee).

Agreed, things can change in the next 30-40 years. But at the same time, I would say that we do intend on keeping our membership as long as possible, hopefully to the end of our term. If nothing else, keep it in the family to that point.

Our plan is to keep our points until they expire, now plans can change but our intent is to keep them unless something unforeseen happens. We have young children (5 and 3) and always thought when we were no longer able to use the points our children (hopefully children :goodvibes ) might.

Even if you do plan to sell it later, a contract with more years left on it is still more attractive for many people, especially those that just want points and are less concerned with home resort.
