I would like my kids to go to camps during the summer. I was looking at some brochures, and the only type of camp I see available here, is a daycamp. OK, I am fine with that. But geez when did it get so expensive? Anywhere from $185 up to $225 for a 5 day camp from 8am to 3 pm. Is it just me or is that expensive? If this were a week camp where the kids stayed away, than I could understand but a daycamp?
Opinions please? Thanks

Hi, Amanda:

I live in Georgia, also, Atlanta, and that's the price I pay every year...

I posted a similar post a few years back and the prices vary by state and city. I saw some prices that made ours look CHEAP and others that made it look ridiculous.

Whatever it is a complete insult to spend that kind of money for a summer day camp. It's like daycare, it's become closer to a mortgage!

So what do you do? I mean if you send him for a month worth of day camps thats almost $1000:o That is just crazy! I think I will feel jipped if I send each of my kids for a week (x3) and pay $675 for ONE week of DAY camp! Do you know what I could do at WDW with that money???LOL

DD's daycare runs a camp during the summer for kids up to age 6. This summer the cost is close to $200 per week and that doesn't include swimming lessons. The expense of running the facility, insurance, payroll etc really adds up. Sleep away camp costs thousands.

wow!!! Here in MA--we are notorious for very high day care costs. We just got the brochure from the Y for summer day camp. $322 for a 2 week session. This includes swimming lessons, rec swimming, archery, adventure hiking, ropes, and all sorts of other stuff. I guess we are getting a pretty good deal after all.

DS goes to this Y for afterschool, so we know and trust the counselors and program already.

We pay close to $200/week for HALF DAY CAMP!!! Isn't that outrageous?? Even at the YMCA!

Is your child a Boy Scout/Girl Scout? Most councils own their own camps and each area gets it for a week of day camps. They are usually well run and inexpensive.

No unfortunately none of my kids are Boy/Girl scouts. I assume you have to be one to go to one of their camps? I just think that is crazy money for a week of day camp, I think I will just lead my own "day" camp with a week visit to one of the value resorts for less money!

I know it seems like a lot, but if you break the $225/wk down it comes out to be only $6.50 per hour, we pay our teenage babysitter more than that! When you consider all they have to do; pay and train the staff in First Aid/CPR and possibly Life Saving, maintain the property and facilities and pay taxes, replace equipment, possibly provide food, and pay what I am sure are HUGE insurance bills, can you imagine the liability  , you can see where the money goes. Oh, and don't forget transportation if they have a bus pickup.

We are sending DD to 3 day/wk camp this summer, more for socialization than anything else and we will pay around $600 for eight weeks. The big camp around here is Banner Day camp. I just looked up their cost and an eight week, 5-day camp runs anywhere from $3675 to $4095 depending on age. :earseek:

I really feel for parents like my DSis who work full time and have to do something with their child/ren for the summer. It makes me realize anew how lucky I am to be able to stay home with DD.
