Hello all!

Just got back from WDW and the pin trading bug hit me for the first time on this trip!!!:thumbsup2

I was wondering, when I run my thumb across some of the pins that I traded for, they feel kind of rough like the pad of my thumb is catching a burr or something. Is this a way to decide if this is a scrapper or not? Any help would be appreciated!:woohoo:

I kind of doubt that it's a universal way to identify a scrapper. Disney pins have all sorts of backs - some smooth, some rough, some with indented Mickey heads. Also the backs are really varied with pin age - some of the very old pins look really different from the current style of pins (enamel with rough backs).

So far, I haven't heard of a way to positively identify a scrapper unless you have several copies of the same pin and one looks distinctly different.

I'm sorry. I should have stated that I am running my thumg across the front of the pin.

It is hard to tell...
usually..I would say..
if it feels rough in the front..it is a scrapper.
But..lately..
I have bought a few..Pins..directly from Disney..
with glaring errors.
all were smooth...
but..one had..smooth lumps..:lmao:
I have been trying to exchange the darn pin for weeks..
but, it is one of the rarer DVC ones..

I've had pins I've purchased that felt rough and I've had scrappers that did as well. It's not a definite way to tell if you have a scrapper.

I have been trading pins since 2006... so I know about this kind of stuff.

The USUAL scrapper description is there are sometimes blotches of the paint as in paint missing, dips in the paint, not glossy finish! the poker thingy in the back usually has one or two smaller posts on either side of it. make sure that the emblem/ words/ designs on the back are not cut off or mispelled or wierd looking. sometimes that pin is supposed to be on a silver material and its on gold/ vice-versa!!!

The only real way is to look up every one on pinpics.com and compare to what they say on there!!!

GOod Luck!

So called 'scrappers' are actually the koolest new thing for those 'in the know'. many pin collectors have come to appreciate them more than the boring ''so called' 'official' pins. why?? because they have individuality, character, style and class!... i found this 'anti-scrapper' guy throwing 'scrappers' in the trash at disney land./ i asked him what he was doing and he proceded to preach to me about 'official disney trading pins'(oooo scary) apparently he has designated himself sheriff of 'anti scrapper county'...i asked them if i could have them and he said "oh no! these can't go back into the trade cycle! it goes against everything mickey stands for!".. um, ok crazy person(many 'anti scrappers' seem to be um..unique) .. i was like ok, tell you what i'll give you 10.00 not to throw this (what he referred to as ) 50 cent pin in the trash because i know someone in beverly hills who is willing to give me $50.00 dollars for it as it has induviduality as a 'scrapper'..he said 'i seriously doubt that' in his official disney trading pin police voice...but he took my 10.00...he was right though...i didn't get $50.00 for the known 'scrapper'...i got $160.00/ so, u official disney trading pin orthodox police ppl keep going ahead and throwing 'scrappers' in the trash that are worth 100 dollars among 'true collectors'..thanks!!!!!!!:banana::worship::worship::worship:

Hmm. I would take that story with a grain of salt.... Sounds like a scraper story to me....

Alot of the time a scrapper pin weighs less than an official pin b/c they use cheap metal. I have pins that I bought at WDW so I know they are real. If I find a pin that I think is a scrapper I hold it in one hand and hold a similar sized official pin in my other hand. If you can feel a difference between the two, chances are the pin that weighs less is a scrapper. This test is not exact science by any means but is a good way to check on the fly (in addition to feeling for rough edges and looking for paint flaws).
