I have always wanted to shoot infrared and was wodering if there is a way with the S5 or will I have to wait till I get me DSLR next year.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that you can take infrared shots with your camera or any normal digital SLR either. Digital sensors are designed to respond to light in the visible spectrum, not the infrared. With a film SLR, you can use film that is sensitive to infrared, but it's a real pain.

I think there are some places that will convert a digital camera to shoot in infrared, but once that's done, they don't shoot visible light anymore.

Does your S5 take filters on the lens? If so, it may be possible with an IR filter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/131/Standard_Filters_Infrared.html but some things to keep in mind:

(1) the filters are almost black - you will not be able to see through them. You will most likely need to focus the camera (on tripod of course due to #2). lock the focus, then put the filter on the lens.

(2) because of #1, your exposure will be really long - you will need to up your ISO and plan on a 30 second+ exposure in *bright* sunlight. You will have to experiment.

(3) The resulting image will be various shades of red; you will have to do conversions in PS - google and you will find lots of advice on converting for either a color IR look or a b&w IR look.

(4) The focus might not be perfect because IR wavelengths focus on a different plane than a regular image does. On good slr lenses, you will actually see a separate focus line for IR work. Don't set it at your maximum aperture.

The filters can be quite expensive so you might want to google Powershot S5 IS infrared before you buy one.

Now, an easier option for you might be conversion. If I remember correctly, you upgraded to the S5 so if you still have your old digital, you might be able to get it converted. Lifepixel is the best and here is the link to which cameras they can convert and for how much - http://www.lifepixel.com/digital-infrared/faq.html#Whichdigitalcamerasdoyoumodifytoinfrared. If you choose to do it, please link from my site since I am an affiliate of theirs:

You will still need to do PS work since again the images will be red. If you get into it, PM me and I will give you some tips. One of these days, I'll actually write up a bunch of stuff and post it on my website....
