Forgive me for being a bit late in starting this TR, but we had such a great time on our trip I certainly wanted to do one. So...better late than never!

We are WDW veterans and have taken our boys about once a year - we love the magic, excitement, and fun of WDW but the main reason we have gone back over and over is that my DS3 has milk-protein induced enterocolitis syndrome. We have been very impressed with WDW's handling of food allergies and so it will be our main vacation destination as long as he has this diagnosis!

Last summer, I was asked to present at a big work-related conference in San Francisco. The dates of the conference were just after our 7th anniversary :hug:and I happened to wrangle a week off of work immediately after the conference. So DH (Ralphie) and I decided to take an anniversary trip tacked onto the end of the trip out to San Fran sans kids!:cloud9:

We have two boys, ages 5 and 3 and a 6-year-old doggie:lovestruc. We made arrangements for my parents and then my mother-in-law and sister-in-law to split the time watching this crew.

Then we started planning, and knew that our last stop on the trip had to be DLR. Neither DH nor I had been there before.:goodvibes

We flew into San Fran on 10/28. I had to speak at the conference on the afternoon of 10/29 and early in the morning of 10/30. The conference ended at 12noon and then I was free!!! DH had spent those 2 days touring around San Fran.

Our plan for 10/30 was cable car rides, touring on foot, and the evening tour of Alcatraz....
(pictures coming up)

10/30/09

We spent the afternoon riding the cable cars to the shopping areas and then down to the piers. We had a late lunch at a Vietnamese place on the water - I can't remember the name, but the food was delicious.

View of the Bay Bridge, which was closed while we were there

We headed along the piers to the ferry to Alcatraz. It was VERY cold throughout the evening. I had NOT packed appropriately for this and had two jackets on and socks with my flip flops! I had only packed one pair of jeans for the entire vacation. DH is an overpacker, but of course had plenty of warm clothes for the San Fran portion of the trip!

Sunset and Golden Gate Bridge from Alcatraz

The evening tour of Alcatraz is really neat. They have various guides stationed around the island to tell little stories outside of the usual audio tour. DH really enjoyed it - I was just SO COLD!:scared1:
We made it back to the mainland and walked further down the piers and had dinner at a seafood place - marginal at best. We then spent our last night in the conference hotel (the Grand Hyatt).

Next up: Trip down the coast - rugged and beautiful Highway 1!

Ooh I am excited to read more! Great pics!

We are considering visiting San Fran then driving down to DL as well, interested in how it worked for you!:cool1:

First, to my defense.....the main reason I have to overpack is so that when DW is cold and takes my sweatshirt, I have another long sleeve shirt for myself. :thumbsup2

As for my 2 days touring alone, I really liked San Francisco. It is just such an interesting place. First off (and most importantly), figure out the transportation options....and how to use them wisely. It only took a couple of steep climbs before I learned to take the cable cars to the highest location and walk 'down' to everything else. Here are a few of the highlights from my 2 days of exploring. Chinatown - lots of interesting things to see here.....the fresh produce, the meat hanging in the windows, the fish jumping out of the live wells, etc. The sea lions at Pier 39 - I could have sat there and watched them all day. Coit Tower - great view of everything from up there - but take the bus up and take the steps back down. Grace Cathedral. Golden Gate Bridge - but riding a bike there wasn't exactly fun. Lombard Street. Grabbing a cup of hot chocolate and heading over by the ferry building to watch the sun rise under the bay bridge - add in the sea lions and anything else swimming by. And don't forget Alcatraz - just one of those places that I've always wanted to see and I wasn't disappointed. And if you're walking down Columbus Ave, stop at Molinari's Deli for a sandwich.

Also the Vietnamese restaurant was the Slanted Door. And I'll be sure to chime in about some other things throughout the trip report.

I am enjoying your TR so far! I can't wait to read more. :goodvibes

I'm glad you and your family have a vacation destination that can accommodate your son's needs. Having helpful people around I'm sure helps calm any nerves that you may have.

Thanks for reading ckmiles! It really was great - next part will be about the drive itself.

Awww honey, thanks for jumping in....but admit it, you're an OVERPACKER! I don't think I used anything of yours this trip!
Thanks for the name of the restaurant - they had these awesome spring rolls and were fried and so very light and crispy on the outside and then you were supposed to add some sauce on top and wrap them in lettuce leaves. Mmmmm!

Love your trip report title and looking forward to hearing more!
Thanks!

It's so true Kat - we were so very nervous that first time we took him and it was so wonderful once we realized that we didn't have to be so crazed about it the whole time. I mean, we rarely eat out ever unless we bring food from home for him, and there we were on vacation, eating out for at least 2 meals a day and it was just fine because of the way WDW accomodates people with food allergies. What a relief! Thanks for jumping aboard!

10/31 - Halloween

We were up bright and early to begin our trek southward. Ralph went out to get the rental car while I packed up and checked out of the Grand Hyatt. I met him outside and he surprised me by renting a convertable! I had always wanted a convertable when I was in my 20's, early 30's and once DH and I got married, I got one... before the kids. I drove around with the car seat in it for a while and then, when pregnant with son #2, I just decided I couldn't do the 2-door thing anymore and so sadly I traded it in for an Escape Hybrid. So, we had ourselves a convertable for our Highway 1 adventure!
But, it was way too cold in San Fran that early in the morning to drop the top and so off we went. We had my GPS, a map, and some guidebooks. Our ultimate desination for that day was a night tour at the Hearst Castle in San Simeon.

Our first stop was Monterey. We walked along Cannery Row and stood on the pier the aquarium is on to watch the sea otters. We walked along the shore, saw some sea lions, and had some lunch then hopped back on the road.

Our plan was to then drive 17-mile Drive so that Ralph, a golf enthusiast, could see Pebble Beach. We got lost trying to find the entrance to 17-mile Dr. We drove around in circles some then finally figured it out. You have to pay a fee to enter so that you can see the course and the mansions in the neighborhood. They give you a little map and have little markers where you should pull over and you can read about that spot. I know and care nothing about golf so this portion of the trip was not too exciting for me.... Apparently the big excitement is seeing this:

4267286986_6afcff97f6_m.jpg

The "Lone Cypress" is the logo of Pebble Beach
So we were there for a some time while DH and others shot picture after picture of this tree:confused3 Oh, and then he had to send it to my dad via Blackberry (my dad is a big golfer).

We then went to the Pebble Beach clubhouse and walked around some of the shops there. You can walk out towards the 18th green (apparently very famous golf hole because it is all along the ocean) so we did. And another picture had to go to my dad.

Then (YAY) we finally left Pebble Beach and started along Highway 1 to reach San Simeon. We were able to put the top down and what an absolutely beautiful and thrilling ride! The highway hugs the mountains on the left, constantly twisting and turning and climbing and dropping, and right to your right is the ocean. It was just so amazing. There are a few little towns along the way, but not many - just mountains and the Pacific. We decided to stop at Pfeiffer Beach because we read that the ocean has carved out big holes and such in large rocks just beyond the beach. So, we headed down this road that veered off the Highway that just kept going and going...it became a one lane dirt road and then out of nowhere was a toll booth! Yes we had to pay a fee to get onto the beach. I was ready to turn around because we had wasted a ton of time just getting down there, but Ralphie felt that we had spent the time so we were going to see this beach!

Pfeiffer Beach

By the time we made it back up the long road to Highway 1, we were starting to get worried about making it to the Hearst Castle on time for our tour. I was upset because I really wanted to stop at Jade Cove - a little spot where you can supposedly find pieces of jade. However, we knew had to hurry so we decided to skip it.:headache:

So we drove, as quickly as the roads would allow, and just made it to the Hearst Castle in time for our tour group to depart on the bus that takes you up the hill to the castle. The night tour there is really neat - they have area volunteers who dress up in period costumes and act as if they are at the Castle for a party. This place was just amazing - the opulence of it all!

By the time we left the Castle and checked into our San Simeon hotel it was just before 9pm. Ralphie had booked a room as this really charming place with a little package - a fireplace room with a bottle of California wine and chocolates. However, we were both wanting dinner and so we asked the guy at the front desk where we could eat. He told us to try across the street and so we did, but the only 2 restaurants in the town were closed! After we returned to ask him "now what?" he pointed us to the next town, Cambria. After driving a bit to get there we found one place open - the Round Up Pizza and Grub. We devoured that pizza - we were so hungry! It was so funny because a bunch of other people from the Castle tour showed up there too - it was truly the only place still open in the area!

By the time we got back to the room we were exhausted. We decided to save the wine and chocolates for later in the trip and hit the hay.

Next: MOONSTONES, HOLLYWOOD, IN-AND-OUT, and finally...DISNEYLAND!!!
BTW, I can't seem to import my pictures any bigger than this - sorry! I will continue to work on it.:headache:

:banana::banana::banana:

YAY i'm so glad you started this TR!!!!

I love how you guys were able to see so much of Cali! That castle is gorgeous! Sorry you had to cut the jade cove place out of your tour but I'm glad you made it to the castle in time! Too funny about the pizza grub place!! :rotfl2:

Can't wait to hear more!!!

11/1/09

We woke up early in San Simeon. Our quaint little hotel had a continental breakfast, so we enjoyed that then packed up and headed out. Because we didn't do Jade Cove, we decided to stop at Moonstone Beach, a spot where you can find moonstones washed up on the shore.
Not that I had any idea what a moonstone looks like!
A nice woman on the beach showed me the ones she had collected so I would know. I ended up with only about 3 small moonstones, but this entire beach is covered by colorful rocks that have been worn smooth by the waves. I found so many beautiful rocks to take with me - I think my suitcase gained some weight for the flight home;)

4277844388_6bb56944ca.jpg

Here I am on Moonstone Beach searching for the little beauties

After about an hour of rock collecting, we hopped back in the convertable and headed south. We were headed to Disneyland!

As I perused the map, I saw that we were going to pass something called the "Hollywood Bowl". I told Ralphie that I thought this meant that we would pass the Hollywood sign, that I thought the Bowl meant the area below the sign as it is up on a large hill. He thought I was crazy, but when we got to that area I got out the camera and was scanning intently...and I didn't find it. :sad2: We eventually got stuck in traffic and were at a crawl when Ralph asked if I was still looking for the sign. I said that I had given up - had even put my camera away. Just as I said this, I turned around and what was right behind us???

4277845814_2d9b165563.jpg

After that excitement, we discussed stopping for a late lunch. I really wanted to eat at In-N-Out Burger. I had read some TRs here and there were at least 2 in which this place was prominently featured:)
Ralphie didn't get what the big deal was, but he agreed.
We got off at one of the DL exits and programmed the GPS to find the nearest In-N-Out. We didn't choose a good exit - traffic here was at a crawl at best, but we eventually got to our destination. OMG - I am so glad we stopped here. That was the best burger and fries I have ever had, I am not kidding!!!:cloud9: DH just thought it was so-so, but my mouth is watering just thinking about it now. I wish In-N-Out would make its way to Cleveland!!!

We headed back to the DLR area and were so excited to drive past the Disneyland sign!!!
We pulled up to the Grand Californian - wow, just beautiful - even from the outside!

The entrance door to the GCH

The lobby is just breathtaking. I have always wanted to stay at the WL at WDW but am always outvoted in favor of another hotel. I imagine that the WL and the GCH have a similar feel in the dark wood and super high ceiling in the lobby, with the roaring fire and comfortable seating all around.

4267268324_27d3810f44.jpg

Huge flower arrangement in the lobby

Our plan was to check in and then have DH return the rental car while I went into DL to pick up our Fantasmic! Dessert Package tickets. We hadn't initially planned on the FDP, but had read about it on the DIS. We knew that there was no way that we would sit and wait to save seats for the show 2-3 hours in advance, but we did want to see it and have a good view, so we decided to do this sort of at the last minute. We were also concerned that we wouldn't make it to DL in time to pick up the tickets - you had to get them before 5pm inside the park.

So, we went up to the front desk to check in - we went through the paperwork and such and then the CM said we needed to wait for something. She then disappeared, only to return a bit later with Happy Anniversary buttons, a signed picture of Mickey and Minnie, and balloons. How nice!!!

We made our way to our room and found this:

4267246310_6290556041.jpg

The room was really nice, I loved the decor.
We were so excited because we have never celebrated anything in WDW and gotten special stuff!:flower3:

We got set to split up to carry out our plan so that we could get the FDP tickets on time, and headed out with our Anniversary buttons on!:bride:

COOL! Love the decorations and that hotel is so gorgeous! I agree...it is very similar to the WL at WDW! What a great surprise at check in!!! Can't wait for more!

I know - I was so happy! It's so fun to get a little extra attention! Ralphie and I were both impresed with all the "goodies".
On board and loving your report so far. popcorn::
Thanks so much:goodvibes
Can't wait for more!
Thanks for joining in Belle Ella aka Jazz! I just started in on your never-ending TR!:surfweb:

11/1/09 continued

I left GCH to find my way to the parks and pick up our FDP tickets while Ralphie took off in the rental car to drop it at the Downtown Disney Alamo.

I set off and realized that I had no map and really no idea where I was going and frankly, a really poor sense of direction - but, I just followed others and made my way to the plaza between DL and DCA. I really liked how it was such a short little jaunt and there I was - no need to wait for bus/monorail/etc.

We knew that that evening was the last showing of HalloWishes which was another reason we opted for FDP that night. F! was not showing for the rest of our visit and coupled with the possibility of seeing HalloWishes, we decided to hit the park on that day (we originally were just going to check in and have a relaxing dinner somewhere to hit the parks on Monday) but we couldn't change our tickets by the time we decided this so we were told that we would have to stop at the DTD Disney Travel Co. office to add another park day.

4266501195_01c49026f4_b.jpg

My first look at DL!!!

I made my way to guest services just inside the entrance to DL and had to wait in a line a bit longer than I expected. I have to applaud the CMs here - some of the things that people were in there complaining about???:confused3:confused3 One lady was going on and on about a wheelchair rental and I don't think the CM had any clue what her point was (neither did I), but the CM was patient and trying to help her out.

Finally I got to the CM to get our tickets. She gave them to me and proceeded to explain what we needed to do. We had tickets for the late show (HalloWishes would be right afterwards) but we had to get in a line with the early show folks before the early show - this line was to pick your seats for the FDP. I will just say here that this was totally ridiculous. I am not sure why they cannot just assign seats first come first serve (into the "better" seats) when you call and make the reservation. This method led to this huge line in the middle of the park well before the early show - just clogging up the works (people could not get to one of the food carts without "excuse me, excuse me" etc.).
All the seats in the special FDP seem like they would be excellent viewing, so this process was ludicrous to us.

Ok - so I got the tickets, was told the procedure, and went outside to wait for Ralphie. I sat on a nearby bench and was able to see the tail end of the parade. A mother with 2 young boys sat next to me. Made me miss my little buggers! One of her boys was sort of screwing around walking on the bench and fell, scraped his knee, and was bawling. I asked him if a band-aid would make him feel better as I always have kid band-aids in my purse. His mom acted as if I was on fire - pulled him immediately away from me and turned away. Hmmm...I felt like "Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore!" I was just trying to be nice and help!:confused3 Oh well!

It took forever for Ralphie to show up - I knew that this probably meant there were some major issues with the car return and I was right. He said that the drop off was within the parking for DTD which was crazy busy and he had to wait in this long line of cars and then the person at the shop had "stepped out" and so he was told to just go ahead and leave the car. He was a bit worried about doing that and not actually seeing the bill closed out, but did as he was told and met me at the bench. We wandered a bit to get our bearings and decided to ride a few rides...

We started with Indiana Jones
4267250880_0e546b54e6.jpg

Ralphie in Indiana Jones queue
Loved this ride! I love Dinosaur and this was similar but much better. We especially liked the poison dart part.
We rode BTMRR which is my favorite ride at WDW. I just love how the line is mostly outside.
We did POTC - again, liked this better than WDW version. Liked the dual drops and liked how the boats go back up and circle around so that you can see them when you enter the line.

We then decided to head over to DCA to see the Aladdin show with our special Disney Travel Co. priority seating. We had a little time before the show and rode Monsters Inc. Cute ride. We then waited for the Aladdin show and were able to sit in the center about the 15th row back. This was a GREAT show. The genie was absolutely hilarious with a number of very recent funny references - about Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, about Kanye taking the mike from Taylor Swift. So funny!
We tried to ignore my brother calling me throughout the show to ask some stupid question about his crazy, lazy wife and her morning sickness - I mean he must have called like 8 times during the show (which we ignored). You would think someone was dying or something. But no, he just wanted to ask me a question about her nausea medication which they certainly could have asked of her actual physician! Plus, this is her 3rd pregnancy, its not like she's new to this. But that is how they are - the whole world revolves around them:confused3 Ralphie was P.O.'d because he gets so sick of them. So a brief downer, but we quickly recouped.

We did the FDP line thing mentioned above and decided to go to HM. We erroneously thought that since this was the last day of HalloWishes, that the Halloween theming of HM and SM would be removed and we wanted to see that. (We were right about SM, but the Nightmare Before Christmas decoration of HM stays until Christmas we learned)

4277850124_01cdd3eec7_b.jpg

HM
This was one of the longest waits of the entire trip, but we enjoyed the ride. I have to admit that we do not know the Nightmare story. We tried to get the DVD before the trip from DH's brother, but were not successful.

Because of that long wait, I don't think we really did much else until our check in time for the FDP. We were seated in our previously selected seats and given our dessert boxes. We had a waiter who was quite energetic - was trying to rile up the whole crowd and who announced any birthdays and anniversaries within the FDP group. He brought drinks throughout the show. It got fairly chilly when the sun went down and so we had hot chocolate.

F! at DL is awesome. I like the show at WDW but my kids say that its too scary and so we haven't done it in our past few visits. The fire breathing dragon is really cool and I fell in love with the Columbia - what a beautiful ship!

I love this shot with the smoke coming out of its nostrils!

4277130485_c197e6fee9_b.jpg

Happy ending

The dessert boxes are huge - neither of us finished ours so we combined what we had left to take back to the room and snacked on these leftovers throughout the rest of the trip.

4266518789_2200be37cc.jpg

FDP leftovers: top right is cheese and crackers. On bottom, left to right: lemon square with chocolate tulip, coconut macaroon, cheesecake circle with chocolate Mickey head, dense brownie, soft cookie with raspberry jam center and white chocolate decorations. There were also 3 chocolate truffles.

We headed to the Main Street hub to watch HalloWishes. Wow, this was packed! What a great fireworks show! When it was over, we took a leisurely stroll back to GCH and our room to rest up for our first full day in the parks.

BTW - everywhere we went with those Anniversary buttons on, the CMs said something to us. It was nice:)

I loved "Toto we are not in Kansas anymore..." :rotfl2: If you would have offered my kid a bandaid I wouldn't have taken him away!! It's funny how with different cultures and different areas of the States, people are ...... well .... different!

Great update! Loved DL's version of Fantasmic! Isn't it awesome?!! And I love the closness of the resorts! Can't wait to hear more!

11/2/09

We woke up on Monday morning excited for our first full day in DL/DCA. We headed out to take a leisurely morning stroll over to the parks. We stopped at LeBrea Bakery for breakfast. DH had a breakfast sandwich with home fries. I had a croissant and hot chocolate. The mornings and evenings were a bit chilly, but midday temps were nice and warm. We started in DL and made our way around the park but avoiding the FantasyLand rides that we knew we would catch the next morning for Magic Morning. Lines were really pretty short and we were able to ride things multiple times.

4267249364_e94f514680.jpg

Tarzan's Treehouse - I really did not like this "updated" treehouse because I LOVE the Swiss Family Robinson movie and the Swiss Family Treehouse in WDW. However, no one in my family ever wants to do it with me!

4267252592_0a3ec9b87f.jpg

Nemo Submarine Voyage

I was so excited to ride the Nemo Subs. My absolute favorite WDW ride as a kid had been 20,000 Leagues. I was so disappointed when I returned to WDW in 1993 and found it totally gone! Ralphie thought this ride was so stupid - he complained because it was so cramped, boring, etc. Oh well, I was just so happy to be in one of those subs again!

We rode the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Now, I am a bit of a scaredy-cat. I cannot ride big rollercoasters and you would never catch me on TOT! So, I was a bit nervous about Matterhorn because I didn't really know what they were like and you can't really see much of the ride from the line. But, I was "brave" and then felt like an idiot afterwards because the ride is so tame. It is so bumpy and rough, but it would become one of my favorite rides for the trip. We preferred the right side to left.

We headed over the DCA and rode Soarin, the Zephyrs, Mulholland Madness, on our way over to TSM. This is one of our WDW favorites. We were surprised that this wasn't a fast pass attraction. In fact, we didn't realize that there were so few FP attractions but whenever we tried to used FP, it really didn't make much difference in wait time. This was the ride for which we spent the most time in line throughout the trip. We rode it a number of times and waited probably at least 20 min each time. But, it was just as fun as at WDW even though I never did beat Ralphie (although I did come close a few times).

We saw the Pixar Play Parade from the front row! Unheard of for us at WDW because I just refuse to sit and wait and wait for a "good seat", but there was NO ONE there! We had some snacks while watching - I just cannot resist Disney popcorn!

Our big event for this day was dinner at Napa Rose. We had originally planned this as our big anniversary dinner and wanted to do it on our last night at DLR, however NR was closed that night! So, we headed back to our room early to change into more acceptable clothes for dinner. We loved the decor of Napa Rose and the service. I don't drink wine but ordered a mojito (my fave) which was so-so. Ralphie had some wine. Although I do have pictures of our other meals, I felt odd taking pictures in NR with its upscale atmosphere. Later we saw a couple doing it but I heard them apologetically tell their server, "we have to take pictures of the food because we are Asian" Hmmm...not sure what that means:rolleyes:

Anyways - I cannot really remember what we ate here! I am pretty sure that Ralph had steak and I know I had fish and I remember that one edge was very burnt. I know that my dish had a side of broccoli because when we ate at another DLR restaurant, I also got a side of the exact same broccoli. I guess it was broccoli week at DLR restaurants! Frankly, the food was just ok. We were not overly impressed. We had a much better meal later in the week.

We headed back to GCH and to bed - we had a Magic Morning in the morning!

Up next: More pictures (I promise) and going directly from Halloween to Christmas, poor Thanksgiving!!!:sad2:

Thought I would add this in - DH put it into my flickr account to post in a WDW thread. Our last trip to WDW was in May 2009, during what has been referred to as Monsoon week. A WDW thread was asking for people who had been involved in Monsoon week to post their pictures and he posted this one:

4297885052_6fb16e660a_b.jpg

This is our youngest DS and this is exactly what it was like non-stop for days!!!
We are hoping and praying for a better May trip in 2010, especially since we are trying to catch a Space Shuttle Launch too!
